Mobility and the Built Environment

Studying in Berlin & Buenos Aires

Mobility in urban areas is changing worldwide. Shares of

public transport and cycling are growing in European cities,

complemented by new mobility services such as carsharing

and bikesharing. In Latin American metropolitan areas, new

mobility concepts such as cable cars and bus rapid transit

systems are being implemented. At the same time,

automobile dependence continues to rise particularly in cities

in emerging economies.

The built environment through density, diversity of uses,

design or the accessibility of destinations has a significant

influence on people’s daily mobility. Coordinated city and

transport planning is essential for designing the interaction

of mobility and urban development in a sustainable way.

The Dual Master Program Urban Planning and Mobility

focuses on the interaction between mobility, transport and

the built environment as well as the role of integrated trans-

port and land use planning. Successful graduates of this dual

degree program earn a Master of Science degree in Urban

and Regional Planning with a specialization in Urban Plan-

ning and Mobility at the TU Berlin and a degree as Magíster

de la Universidad de Buenos Aires en Planificación y Movili-

dad Urbana.

The four semester modular program is provided by an in-

terdisciplinary team at both partner universities. Students

enrolled at the TU Berlin study in Berlin for the first two se-

mesters, and spend their remaining time in Buenos Aires.

The program provides a blend of theoretical, practical and

methodical competences mixed with first-hand case study

experience. A Spanish language course is a compulsory part

of the program.

Students select modules offered by institutes from both the

Faculty for Planning, Building, Environment and the Facul-

ty for Mechanical Engineering and Transport Systems at TU

Berlin, and the Centro de Transporte en la Area

Metropolitana (CETAM) at the Facultad de Architectura,

Diseño y Urbanismo at the Universidad de Buenos Aires.

This includes:

• Interdisciplinary study projects with differing

spatial scales

• Seminars in theories of spatial planning, mobility

and transport planning

• Seminar on urban mobility in which students

analyze mobility trends, their drivers and the role

planning and regulation in urban areas with an

international comparative focus

• Elective modules from a range of urban and

transport planning and design topics

• Master Thesis project

There is a high demand for professional expertise and

competences to address the challenges of mobility and

transport in an urbanizing world. The interdisciplinary

integration of spatial and transport planning can make a

significant contribution. Successful graduates of the Dual

Master Program are well qualified to work in international

organizations, local and regional authorities, in research and

teaching as well as consultants in this growing field.
