SKID ROW MODULE: 2015

Exploring Homelessness

Fridays September 18 – Group 1

October 2 – Group 2 October 16 – Group 3

8:30 A.M. – 2:30 P.M.

Coordinated by Toby Hur, M.S.W.

Purpose: To expose first year students to the needs of the homeless population in Downtown Los Angeles and to a variety of responses being made to those needs; to facilitate learning opportunities in community action, program administration, policy and planning. Goals: (1) To view a range of social work models in action - some based on social control

and others working for social change. (2) To see a range of social work approaches - some fostering dependency and

others being transformative. (3) To introduce the breadth of social work in the community and the roles of social

workers in a wide service spectrum. (4) To examine the various levels of intervention. (5) To examine stereotyping by putting a human face on homelessness. (6) To encourage students to ask: “What is the role of the social worker in this

community? Where are they? And What difference are they making?” Implementation: 8:30 A.M. - 2:30 P.M. The day will include an orientation, a walk through Skid Row, visits to agencies and a debriefing.

Toby Hur, Skid Row Coordinator will be e-mailing specific information regarding the Skid Row Module.

PUBLIC COUNSELTRAININGS

Coordinated by Larthia Dunham, M.S.W., ACSW One group per session—See following groups

Public Counsel’s General Relief Advocacy Project trains hundreds of volunteers and assists thousands of clients each year. The volunteers range from law students and lawyers to social workers and case managers. By directly advocating in Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) offices on behalf of applicants and recipients, we are not only able to help many clients gain and maintain food and shelter, but we are also able to identify systemic problems that we must address through policy advocacy and/or litigation. The complete training involves reading an 18-page handbook, attending a two-hour training, and participating in an afternoon of advocacy in a DPSS office. While reading the handbook and attending the training will prepare an individual to successfully advocate by phone for clients, the afternoon session is the “lab” portion – held in a welfare office. Only by experiencing the hurdles that a client faces and seeing how an office operates will an advocate gain a true understanding of how to negotiate through the system. TIME: 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. (may go later) LOCATION: Public Counsel 610 S. Ardmore Ave., LA CA 90005 (1 block west of Normandie at 6th Street) PARKING: Street parking available. Street Parking map will be provided LUNCH: Please bring a sack lunch or $, wear comfortable shoes. But, please do not bring food to the DPSS office. There will be a mandatory Wrap-Up meeting the following Tuesday after each Public Counsel Training session from 12 – 12:30 p.m. in the Public Affairs Building.

AGING MODULE

(All students attend together)

February 5, 2016

1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Room 2355

Coordinated by Jené Moio, PhD, L.C.S.W.

Purpose: Older persons, 65 years of age or older, represent 13% of the U.S. population. This is 33.9 million persons or about one in eight Americans. By the year 2010, there will be more Americans over the age of 50 than under. By 2030, it is expected that there will be 70 million older persons in our country. The United States is already beginning to adjust to a growing aging population, and as we do, the demand for human services and social policies that meet the needs of our graying communities is tremendous. There is currently a critical shortage of social workers trained in the unique concerns of this population, and this shortage shows no signs of decreasing in the years to come. The purpose of this learning module is to expose first year students to the social service needs of this population, along with an introduction to geriatric micro and macro practice opportunities in organizations, communities, and policy settings. Objectives:

1. Examine students’ ageist beliefs and values that inform their understanding of social work with this population.

2. Understand the special needs of older adults and the role of social workers in identifying and meeting these needs.

3. Inform students about the GSWEC Program and stipends. 4. Encourage first year students to consider a future career in gerontological

social work. Program: (This agenda may be revised prior to the module; students will be notified of any changes.) 1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. – Older Adult Clients: What every social worker needs to

know 2:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. - A panel of practicing geriatric social workers discuss social

service needs of this population and their work to meet these needs.

Purpose: To expose first year students to planning/administration and clinical practice in the area of Mental Health Services. Objectives:

1. To acquaint students with the spectrum of care for the acute and chronic mentally ill/emotionally disturbed population who are in need of Mental

Health Services in Los Angeles County. 2. To aid students in understanding the role of social workers in public and private settings as a clinician, planner, administrator or researcher. 3. course.

4. To expose students to issues related to the provision of services: funding; program development; unmet needs; response to changing policy; and expanding knowledge.

5. To provide a beginning basis upon which students may think about their particular concentration/specialization for second year. 6.
