Re: Chautauqua County Multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan
Dear Contact Name,
Chautauqua County has received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) tocomplete a multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan and is requesting the participation of yourjurisdiction in this important effort. During the completion of the Chautauqua County Hazard MitigationPlan, the planning participants will focus on the identification and prioritization of projects to reduce oreliminate the loss of life and property damage resulting from natural hazards. A kick off meeting for allparticipating jurisdictions will be held at the Chautauqua County Public Safety Training Facility onThursday, May 23rd at 9:30 am. You are encouraged to attend in person and to bring along one or morepeople from your jurisdiction who will interact with the County on a regular basis throughout theplanning process. Please contact me to let me know whether your jurisdiction will participate in this kickoff meeting no later than April 16th, 2013.
During the hazard mitigation planning process all participating jurisdictions will be expected to:
Participate in monthly planning meetings and respond in a timely fashion to information requestsmade by the County and other planning project participants;
Provide specific information about the characteristics and potential consequences of hazards that arelikely to impact your jurisdiction;
Provide specific information about the assets within your jurisdiction that could be impacted bylikely hazards;
Assist in prioritizing those hazards that could have the largest impact on your jurisdiction and inidentifying and assessing the possible ways to avoid or minimize the undesired effects of thesehazards, and
Assist in implementing the Hazard Mitigation Plan including the specific mitigation projects foryour jurisdiction identified within it.
I expect to have a complete Hazard Mitigation Plan in place by January, 2013. It is important for youto note that your failure to participate in the development of this multi-jurisdictional Hazard MitigationPlan means that your jurisdiction will not be included in the Plan. Consequently your jurisdiction willnot be eligible for FEMA pre-disaster mitigation project funds and in the event of a disaster FEMAmay also withhold recovery reimbursement funding from your jurisdiction.
Very truly yours,
Julius Leone,Director of Emergency ServicesChautauqua County

Chautauqua County Seeks Public Input on Updated Draft Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan
Mayville, NY– The Chautauqua County Office of Emergency Services is seeking additional public input on
the updated draft of the County’s Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. Public participation in the
planning process is critical to the successful development and implementation of the County’s
comprehensive strategy to reduce vulnerability to hazards.
Hazard mitigation is sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and
property from hazards. The County’s Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan identifies natural
hazards that impact our community such as floods, severe storms, tornados, and hazardous materials
incidents; identified actions the County and community can take to reduce the impact of those hazards;
and establishes a process for implementing the plan.
Public input on the plan was solicited from September to November 2013, providing an opportunity for
local residents, agencies, and neighboring communities to participate in the planning process. The
County posted a Hazard Mitigation Survey on its website to gauge the concerns of residents and a portal
web site was hosted to help circulate material and obtain comments. A notice announcing each Hazard
Mitigation Planning Team meeting, periods for comment, and pertinent information about the survey
were mailed to each local jurisdiction participating in the plan.
Based on comments received from the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the
County has made significant updates to the plan and is reposting the document for additional comment.
For access to the plan, please visit the Chautauqua County Emergency Services website at
www.chautcofire.org . The plan will be available for review from 10/7/15 through 11/9/15. Comments
on the draft plan will be accepted through 11/10/15. For questions about Chautauqua County Multi-
Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan and planning process, contact Julius Leone at 716-753-4341or by
email [email protected].
