HELP YOUR COMMUNITY BE HAZARD-READY!
Lake County, CA: Lake County is developing an update to their 2012 Local Hazard Mitigation
Plan. Floods, drought, wildfires, and severe weather are just a few of the hazards of concern to
Lake County. While natural hazards such as these cannot be prevented, a Hazard Mitigation Plan
forms the foundation for a community's long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses by breaking
the repeated cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction. Additionally, only communities with a
FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plan are eligible to apply for both pre- and post-disaster
mitigation grant funding and for lower costs of flood insurance to residents through the National
Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS).
The people most aware of potential hazards are the people that live and work in the affected
community. In addition to plan participation by local, state and federal agencies, the community
is seeking enthusiastic, community-minded residents to be part of our Local Hazard Mitigation
Planning project.
We encourage attendance and participation from the general public at our upcoming planning
team and public meetings to kick off the project; please select the time and location that works
best for you:

Where: Lake County Emergency Operations Center , 1375 Hoyt Avenue, Lakeport As many of you know, Lake County is in the process of updating their 2012 Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP). See attached flyer for background on this LHMP Update process. We are contacting you because we would like you to consider participating in this planning process as a member of the steering committee to the Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee (HMPC). It is a critical component of the LHMP Update to include members of the public and other non- local governmental interests in the planning process to ensure that the plan fully considers and incorporates a variety of ideas and recommendations for hazard mitigation in Lake County. As part of the steering committee you will be charged with providing input on natural hazards and strategies for mitigation and will assist in finalizing decisions relative to the LHMP Update. Examples of matters requiring decision-making and input by the steering committee include, providing input to and confirming acceptance of final plan goals and objectives, identification and prioritization of mitigation actions for the plan, and providing recommendations for incorporating the mitigation strategy of this LHMP into other countywide planning mechanisms and programs. The level of time commitment is limited over the next several months and it includes attendance at four meetings:
• Risk Assessment Meeting (October 26, 9am – 12pm) Lake County Emergency Operation Center, 1375 Hoyt Avenue, Lakeport
• Mitigation Strategy Meetings (November 8, 1-4 pm, November 9, 9am-12pm); Location/Time TBD
• Final Meeting (Date/Time TBD – January/February 2018); Location/Time TBD
Additionally, we would request that you are involved in reading and providing input to the draft plans as feasible and assisting with other areas that may be of interest to you. Please let me know if you are interested in participating in updating the LHMP Update. I can be reached at [email protected] or (707) 263-3450.

Where: Grace Church, 6716 Live Oak Drive, Kelseyville, CA Just a quick reminder, and some materials for your review! All, As you know our mitigation strategy meetings are scheduled for next week on November 15 and 16 from 9:00-noon at the Grace Church in Kelseyville. These are the most important meetings for this LHMP Update Project. This is where the new Mitigation Action Strategy is developed, containing new and ongoing mitigation projects and actions. Your attendance is critical to the development of a comprehensive mitigation strategy that meets the current and future needs of the County. Please plan on attending! In advance of next week’s meetings, we are providing you with a DRAFT, in-process Hazard Risk Assessment Document (Chapter 4 of the LHMP). Please take a look at the Hazard’s information and data prior to our meetings in order to better focus our mitigation projects and actions for the LHMP Update. As this is an in-process document, your review should be on seeing what data we have and don’t have that you may be able to supplement, as well as providing everyone with a common understanding of hazard risks and vulnerability within the County in advance of the meetings. The DRAFT Risk Assessment documents can be accessed at:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/z8fyji4amnbtju5/AAA_Rj_k8WDKU7F3MnGcu21ga?dl=0 We are also attaching a FEMA publication: Mitigation Ideas. Please take a look at this document, organized by hazard, to get some ideas for mitigation projects for next week’s meetings. Thanks everyone for your participation in this important project! Let me know if you have questions, and see everyone next week. Please let me know if you will be able to attend!
