An App for That AN APP FOR THAT

Prepared for ISE 5640

Let’s talk about phones…
mainframe power x10000!phone!cloud enabled storage!gps / geo fence!accelerometer!level!compass!barcode reader!RFID reader!near field communication!bluetooth!pedometer!heart rate sensor!gesture recognition!waterproof!bendable!battery!control devices!extensible (things)!annotation!data collection!biometrics (fingerprint)!payment system!network/crowdsource!remote control!teach!audio record/playback!camera!video recorder!always on!!
Welcome to the era of YOU CAN, question is…!does anyone need that app?!!
…why do they need it?
If we go to the “why” now, we’re full of
assumptions
We need to figure out what
direction to go in
Dude we need a prototype…
GET DATATHE GOLDEN RULE OF PROTOTYPING
LET’S MAKE AN APPNO CODING REQUIRED!
Before we begin…• find some inspiration, talk to
someone who may or may not have a problem, observe, understand
• document current experience
• relate that experience to your super powerful phone
• theorize what you could do
• don’t get stuck in the why, just yet
• embrace the “YOU CAN”
Keep in mind…
• Who is your user?
• Users, people that use the thing
• primary stakeholders, people who decide whether or not the users use the thing
• change the process not the person
Embrace Constraints
• screen size is limited
• optimal/like user experience
• intuitive
• understand where your technology falls down
And Remember
• don’t over think it
• reduction in process is awesome sauce, provided you’re not introducing new pain points
• leverage that super powerful phone
• listen to your customer
Research Plan (goals?)
!Discussion Guide
(consistent capture)
Analyze the notes (find the patterns)
!Note the tasks
(what your app needs to do)
Eventually, you’re going to feel like- I have an idea of what to make! That’s great, now is the time to start sketching!
a blank sheet of paper is the most powerful thing in prototyping
open app first thing you see is this then that and then you could do this and this and then it’d do that

can’t draw? look at your phone, look at apps, use these portals for inspiration
Simply Sketchlet go and draw
make the apphttps://popapp.in/
Congrats You Made an App!
• Now what?
• Test the app with yourself, and your friends
• Repeat the research you did before but this time use the app
• Research Plan (goals?)
• Discussion Guide
Take the prototype to the users, get more data
iterate
Rinse Repeathttps://popapp.in/
so now you have an idea, an app prototype, and you’re feeling pretty cool…
that will be good for this class, however, you’ve still
got a long ways to go
• high fidelity wireframes • writing software requirements • data model!• 1st biz model!• hire or find a developer or capstone course • raise money or get money for developer • start a business (llc)!• build product • figure out marketing strategy • ship product v1 • collect $ from customers • hire people • figure out how to work with people!• refine product based on customer feedback!• get traction!!
if you want to see this idea become real, strap in, this will be a journey

you can also prototype “marketing / sales” too

Special Thanks to:!Katsuhiro Otomo for his artwork of which i’ve excessively used in this presentation, mostly because it keeps me alert, creative and is basically bad ass.
