STUDIES IN ACTS

•A. They were all with one accord in one place

1. The word translated with “one accord” (Greek homothymaden), meaning likemindness, occurs twelve times in the New Testament, eleven of which are found in the book of Acts.

This shows the unity of purpose among these early disciples. This also shows how important it is for the church today to be in one accord.

2. We all must show an interest in what God is doing and we must have united faith and earnest prayer for God to move today.

•B. The coming of the Holy Spirit of God with power was accompanied by two manifestations. The first was the sound of a rushing mighty wind, and the second was cloven tongues like as of fire.

1. They were filled with and baptized with the spirit of God.

2. This was predicted by Isaiah 28:9-12 and by

Jesus.

ISAIAH 28:9-12 •9 Whom shall he teach

knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.

ISAIAH 28:9-12 •10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

ISAIAH 28:9-12 •11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

ISAIAH 28:9-12 •12 To whom he said, This is

the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

ST MARK 16:17 •17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues

ST. JOHN 15:26 • 26 But when the Comforter is

come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

St. John 16:13 • 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit

of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

•C. St. Matthew and St. Luke both reported that John the Baptist foretold of one who would baptize “with the Holy Ghost and with fire”.

ST. MATTHEW 3:11 • 11 I indeed baptize you with

water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire

ST. LUKE 3:16 •16 John answered, saying

unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire

•D. Together the fire and wind make a graphic picture of the coming of the Spirit of God.

ACTS 2:4 •4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

•E. Glossolalia, which is the speaking in unknown tongues, is not always proof of the presence of the spirit of God. Because there are also pagans who practice in speaking in

•E cont. •other tongues. Nevertheless

God gave these men at Pentecost the unnatural ability to speak in tongues that were not their own.

1. The word translated tongue (Greek dialectos) can mean language as well as dialect.

•F. The various languages that were spoken at that time corresponded to the nationalities of those that were present.

ACTS 2:5-13 •5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

ACTS 2:5-13 •6 Now when this was noised

abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

ACTS 2:5-13 •7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilean?

ACTS 2:5-13 •8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

ACTS 2:5-13 •9 Parthians, and Medes, and

Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,

ACTS 2:5-13 •10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia,

in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,

ACTS 2:5-13 •11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

ACTS 2:5-13 •12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

ACTS 2:5-13 •13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

•G. From many lands and many languages the Jews had come from the Diaspora to celebrate the Feast of Weeks in Jerusalem.

1. This was because only at the Jerusalem Temple could they attend these special sacrificial services.

ACTS 2:6 •6 Which was the son of Cainan,

which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech,

•H. The noise of the mighty clap of thunder and of the sound of a rushing wind alarmed the whole city and they came running to the temple where they found the disciples full of the Holy Spirit and speaking in foreign languages.

1. It was not immediately evident how these common Galilean Jews could be speaking in the tongues of each of the listeners.

2. There was an impressive list of nationalities present.

ACTS 7:5-11 •7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilean?

ACTS 2:7-11 •8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

ACTS 2:7-11 •9 Parthians, and Medes, and

• I. The astounding testimony of each one was “we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.”

ACTS 2:12-13 •12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

ACTS 2:12-13 •13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

•J. Many were amazed and perplexed by what they heard and saw. But there were others who were scornfully jeering and mocking them. They accused them of being full of new wine. They said they were drunk.

1. No matter what God does for us there will always be someone standing by to find fault with you.

•K. The new wine (Greek gleokos) is “sweet wine”. It was a special kind of wine distilled from the grape before it is pressed. It was the sweetest and strongest wine.

ACTS 2:14,15,16 •14 But Peter, standing up with

the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

ACTS 2:14,15,16 •15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

ACTS 2:14,15,16 •16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

•L. Peter at this point is ready to assume the role of leadership. He became one of the principal preachers of his day but we note that the eleven are standing with him.

1. No matter what God does for you. You will never out grow the need to have the support of others. We can be no greater than the people who stand with us.

•M. The onlookers thought the disciples appeared to be drunk judging from the way they were acting and speaking and being full of joy.

1. Peter warns the onlookers that the one hundred and twenty are not drunken as everyone thought, but what they are viewing is in actuality a fulfillment of prophecy. Peter than gives the prophecy of Joel 2:28-32

JOEL 2:28-32 • 28 And it shall come to pass

afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

JOEL 2:28-32 •29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

JOEL 2:28-32 •30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.

JOEL 2:28-32 •31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD come.

JOEL 2:28-32 • 32 And it shall come to pass, that

whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

HOW TO OVERCOME HURT

Don’t blame God. God loves you and would never ever do anything to hurt you.

• When people hurt you, they do so because they have been deceived by the devil.

• The devil hates you and he is seeking to destroy you.

• The devil, however can’t demonstrate his hate for you without someone to work through.

• Always remember, the people who are being used by the devil are hurting and have been wounded themselves. They are walking in deception; they have no idea they are being used by the devil,

• nor are they aware of the fact that everything they are doing to you will someday come back on them. So these people need your love, prayers, and mercy.

• If you fail to love and forgive them, you then set yourself up to be used by the devil, and then you become just like the people who harmed you.

• We must be able to separate the act from the actor.

• It is quite all right to hate the act; but we must never hate the actor.

• A major key to walking in the victory among Black Christians is to come to understand that most of us have been greatly hurt and wounded; with this knowledge, we must be watchful to be lied on,

• lied to, and taken advantage of. Then we must be quick to understand them and forgive and pray for them.

• If you learn to walk in this truth, no matter what they say about you or do to you, they cannot stop what God is doing in your life.

• I have been blessed; although my Black brothers and sisters have sought my destruction.

• The secret is to place the blame where it belongs; blame the devil!

• When they treat you with honor and respect, place the glory where it belong; give the glory to God.
