IntroductionCOSMOSWorks® is a design analysis automation application fully integrated with SolidWorks®. This software uses the Finite Element Method (FEM) to simulate the working conditions of your designs and predict their behavior. FEM requires the solution of large systems of equations. Powered by fast solvers, COSMOSWorks makes it possible for designers to quickly check the integrity of their designs and search for the optimum solution. COSMOSWorks comes in several bundles to satisfy your analysis needs. It shortens time to market by testing your designs on the computer instead of expensive and time-consuming field tests.

COSMOSMotion™ lets you make sure your assembly mechanisms will work before you build them. Fully embedded inside of SolidWorks, COSMOSMotion enables engineers to size motors/actuators, determine power consumption, layout linkages, develop cams, understand gear drives, size springs/dampers, and determine how contacting parts behave.

COSMOSFloWorks™ combines a high level of functionality and accuracy with ease-of-use. Fully embedded inside of SolidWorks, COSMOSFloWorks is perfect for the engineer who needs flow analysis, but is not necessarily an expert in the field of fluid simulation. Whether you are developing an automobile, the wing of an airplane, or an exhaust valve, using COSMOSFloWorks in the product development cycle can help you build a better product in less time.

Installation

Introduction

This chapter describes how to install the COSMOSWorks application and related products using Microsoft® Windows® Installer (WI) technology. The following sections serve different installation types:

Section 1: describes tasks that the typical COSMOSWorks user performs - the installation, modification, and removal of the COSMOSWorks application.

Section 2: describes tasks that a system administrator performs - the creation of administrative images on a server machine.

Section 3: describes how a system administrator can install and manage the COSMOS license service on a server machine.

Section 4: describes tasks that allow for silent installations of COSMOS products.

Notes:

COSMOSWorks, COSMOSMotion, and COSMOSFloWorks are add-ins to SolidWorks. After installing an application, you can enable or disable it by clicking Tools, Add-In.

This chapter is a guide to installing the COSMOSWorks application using WI. It is not intended to be an exhaustive discussion of the WI technology. For more information on WI, see Microsoft’s Windows Installer documentation.

The WI term, administrative image, is analogous to the InstallShield term, server installation.

SolidWorks 2005 SP0.0 or later must be installed on your computer before attempting to install COSMOSWorks 2005.

The installation of COSMOSWorks interface is required for all COSMOSWorks bundles and add-on options except COSMOSFloWorks, COSMOSMotion and COSMOSEMS.

Section 1: For the Typical COSMOSWorks User

Installation typesYou can install the COSMOSWorks application using one of the following methods:

Individual installation of the COSMOSWorks application files on the user's computer. The COSMOSWorks application is installed directly on the local hard drive. This installation takes up disk space on the user's computer and must be updated locally when a new service pack is available. However, executing the program is faster because it is not impacted by network traffic.

Client installation on the user's computer that references the COSMOSWorks application files on a remote server. The COSMOSWorks application files are not copied to the client computer, but an installation is performed to configure the license if necessary and create the registry entries, shortcuts etc. The user runs the COSMOSWorks application over the network using an administrative image on a remote server. This saves disk space on the local computer, but program execution is slower with higher network traffic.

The Installation SourceYou can install COSMOSWorks and other COSMOS applications in one of two ways:

From a COSMOSWorks CD.

From the administrative image on a server across a network. Your system administrator must create the administrative image and inform you of its location.

To install on a local computer from the CD:1 Insert the COSMOSWorks Disk into your CD-ROM drive. The setup program

starts automatically. Read the Welcome message and click Next. The Software License Agreement window appears.

• The client installation can only be performed from an administrative image. Refer to the To install on a local computer from an administrative image section for more details.

• COSMOSMotion, COSMOSFloWorks and COSMOSDesignSTAR programs cannot reference files from a remote machine. Thus the client installation for these products copies all the program files locally on the client machine similar to an individual install.

2 Read the agreement and choose I accept the license agreement then click Next. Otherwise, click Cancel to exit the installation program. If you click Next, the COSMOS License Information window appears.

3 Follow on-screen instructions to copy program files and configure your license.

Use the Installation Tips below for any questions during installation. You may need to reboot your computer when the installation is complete.

Installation Tips

COSMOSWorks 2005 Install Choice Dialog Box

Upgrade: Select this option to upgrade your existing COSMOSWorks installation, then select the upgrade path in the list. The upgrade path list contains a list of all the paths where one or more COSMOS products are installed.

New Installation: Select this option if you wish to install COSMOSWorks and/or other COSMOS products to a new directory. Note that this option only allows installing to a new directory. Any previous installs of COSMOSWorks 2005 will be removed and replaced with files from the current setup.

COSMOSWorks Options Dialog Box

COSMOSWorks comes in several bundles and provides add-on options. The Options dialog allows you to choose the bundle you have purchased. Depending on the selected options, other COSMOS products like COSMOSDesignSTAR, COSMOSM, COSMOSFloWorks, and COSMOSMotion are installed automatically.

Due to Microsoft limitations, you cannot install the COSMOSWorks applications from a remote CD-ROM drive.

When you launch each product installation (typically from a web download or browsing to the CD folder and double clicking the individual product installation), the Upgrade list will contain the product names instead of the path. If multiple versions of the product are detected, then select the appropriate product to upgrade from the list.

Whether you do an upgrade or new installation, any intermediate versions of COSMOSWorks 2005, COSMOSMotion 2005 & COSMOSFloWorks 2005 will be automatically removed. The installation allows you to have and maintain only one instance of any major release for a particular COSMOS product.

To install on a local computer from an administrative image:1 Using Windows Explorer on your local machine, map the network drive

where the administrative image of COSMOSWorks is installed. Ask your system administrator for this location.

2 Double-click the COSMOSSetup.exe file located in the drive mapped in the above step. Use the following installation tips for any questions during installation. You may need to reboot your computer when the installation is completed.

Installation Tips

COSMOSWorks 2005 Install Choice Dialog Box

Upgrade: Select this option to upgrade your existing COSMOSWorks installation, then select the upgrade path in the list. The upgrade path list contains a list of all the paths where one or more COSMOS products are installed.

New Installation: Select this option if you wish to install COSMOSWorks and/or other COSMOS products to a new directory. Note that this option only allows installing to a new directory. Any previous installs of COSMOSWorks 2005 will be removed and replaced with files from the current setup.

• This dialog does not appear if you do not have a previous WI installation.

COSMOSWorks Options Dialog Box

COSMOSWorks comes in several bundles and provides several add-on options. The Options dialog allows you to choose the bundle you have purchased. Depending on the selected options, other COSMOS products like COSMOSDesignSTAR, COSMOSM, COSMOSFloWorks, and COSMOSMotion are installed automatically in addition to COSMOSWorks.

When you launch each product installation (typically from a web download or browsing to the CD folder and double clicking the individual product installation), the Upgrade list will contain product names instead of paths. If multiple versions of the product are detected, then select the appropriate product to upgrade from the list.

Whether you do an upgrade or new installation, any intermediate versions of COSMOSWorks 2005, COSMOSMotion 2005 & COSMOSFloWorks 2005 will be automatically removed. The installation allows you to have and maintain only one instance of any major release for a particular COSMOS product.

Running the COSMOSWorks ApplicationIn your Windows desktop, click Start, Programs, COSMOS 2005 Applications, COSMOSWorks 2005. You can similarly launch other COSMOS products like COSMOSMotion, COSMOSFloWorks, COSMOSDesignSTAR, and COSMOSM.

Modifying, Repairing, or Removing an Installation1 In Windows, click Start, Settings, Control Panel.

2 Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

The Add/Remove Programs dialog box appears.

3 Select the appropriate COSMOS product, for example COSMOSWorks 2005.

4 Based on your operating system, click the appropriate button to modify or delete the installation. If you are modifying an installation, go to step 5; otherwise, confirm to delete the installation.

The Setup dialog box appears.

5 Click Next.

6 In the Program Maintenance dialog box, select one of the following options:

• Modify. This option simply reinstalls the application files. It is rarely used.

• Repair. To reinstall COSMOSWorks using the current installation parameters. The Repair option is useful if the COSMOSWorks installation is corrupt. Follow the on-screen instructions to repair the installation.

• Remove. To completely remove the COSMOSWorks application. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the application.

Creating an Administrative ImageTo serve the COSMOSWorks application files across a network, you create an administrative image of the COSMOSWorks application files on the server's hard drive. You can install the administrative image from any computer on the network. Browse the network for the location on the computer that will act as the server for the COSMOSWorks application. You can create an administrative image on the client computer by specifying a folder on its local hard drive.

The resulting administrative image is a tree of folders that contains all the distributed files in an uncompressed format. The administrative image occupies a large amount of space on the server's hard drive. Once the administrative image is created, you can start additional installations on other computers in the network from this server location.

Client computers can access the administrative image to run the COSMOSWorks application on their local computers. You must perform a client installation on each client computer before it can access and use the COSMOSWorks application on the server.

To create an administrative image:1 Insert the COSMOSWorks CD into your CD-ROM drive.

2 In your Windows desktop, click Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt.

3 In the Command Prompt window, enter:

msiexec /a <Msi_ path>

The variable Msi_path represents the path and filename of the .msi file for your operating system and language. The COSMOSWorks .msi file name is constructed as follows:

COSMOS_<language>.msi

A sample command line is:

msiexec /a F: \ cwwi\MainInstall\COSMOS_English.msi

The COSMOS 2005 Installation Wizard appears.

4 Follow on-screen instructions. In the License dialog box, make sure that you choose the network (floating) license where the hostid matches the hostid of the machine you are installing the administrative image on. Otherwise, the licensing fails. Note that you can skip the license configuration step if you just want to create the administrative image of COSMOSWorks and other COSMOS products on the remote machine.

Upgrading an Administrative ImageThe following procedure applies when you upgrade to major COSMOSWorks releases. For information on how to upgrade an administrative image for a COSMOSWorks service pack, refer to the Download and Installation section of each service pack page.

To upgrade an administrative image:1 Create an administrative image on a server for COSMOSWorks 2005 using

the previous procedure, “To create an administrative image”.

2 Install COSMOSWorks 2005 and other COSMOS products on each client computer using the procedure “To install on a local computer from an administrative image”.

Removing an Administrative Image

To remove an administrative image from the server:1 Make sure that no active COSMOSWorks sessions are in progress.

2 Make sure that COSMOSWorks and other COSMOS products are uninstalled from all the client machines on which it was installed.

3 Delete the administrative image from the server’s hard drive.

Section 3: To Install and Configure the COSMOS License Service

The COSMOS Network License Manager installation allows you to install only the license files as well as to configure the COSMOS License Service on a server machine. You cannot run COSMOS on the server machine using this installation. However, you can install COSMOS on any client computer across the network using the procedure, “To install on a local computer from CD“ or “to install on a local computer from an administrative image” described in the previous sections. During the client installation, you can specify to access the license from the server machine using the port-number@host-name option in the COSMOS License Information dialog box.

To install the COSMOS Network License Manager:1 Insert the COSMOSWorks CD into your CD-ROM drive.

2 From the CD menu, choose the second button “Install COSMOS Network License Manager”. The Installation starts up.

NOTE: When the COSMOSWorks 2005 Install Choice dialog box appears, select Upgrade an existing installation.

3 Follow the on-screen instructions to copy the license files as well as to configure the COSMOS License Service on the server machine.

You can use the COSMOS License Administrator located under Start->Programs-> COSMOS Network License Manager; to check or reconfigure your license based on the license file. If you do not have a license file, the COSMOS License Administrator lets you request it through the Internet.

Section 4: Silent Installations

Passing Properties to a Silent InstallationTo start a silent installation (without the display of a user interface or dialog boxes), use the /i and /qn options of the msiexec.exe command. Set the global properties for installation options different from defaults.

Improved Toolbars and XP Style Icons

More buttons have been added to the COSMOSWorks 2005 toolbars. You can now use toolbars for most operations. The color content of toolbar buttons has been enhanced by using the Windows XP 256 color icons instead of 16 colors. The appearance of icons in the COSMOSWorks Manager tree has also been improved by redesigning some of them and enhancing the color content of others.

COSMOSWorks uses the PropertyManager style interface instead of dialog boxes for the results plot options. The PropertyManager allows your graphics to be displayed instead of being hidden by the result dialog boxes. It also allows users to graphically preview results and change settings that dynamically update graphics on screen.

Improved Section and Iso PlotsCOSMOSWorks allows users to choose any SolidWorks plane as the clipping plane. In addition users can move and rotate the clipping plane dynamically leading to improved visualization of section and iso plots.

COSMOSWorks now allows users to customize the size, quality and color of symbols for loads, restraints and mesh controls. This is useful when applying loads and restraints to small faces or when grouping them visually.

SolidWorks Style Analysis Tutorials

COSMOSWorks tutorials now contain links to open the respective SolidWorks model directly. In addition, when users click on the toolbar button in the tutorial, COSMOSWorks flashes the respective icon in the interface. This is useful because no browsing is required to open the SolidWorks model for any tutorial. In addition, this makes it easy for the new user to get familiar with the user interface.

Drop Test StudiesP

COSMOSWorks now has a new study type called Drop Test. A drop test study helps users to design products that survive being dropped from a given height or impacting a rigid floor with a given velocity. This functionality provides a low cost alternative to physical drop testing in simple few steps.

Bolted ConnectionsBolted connections simulate the behavior of two components held together by bolts. Users can simulate the effect of torque due to bolt tightening. This is particularly useful because it eliminates the need for modeling the bolts. Easier to Specify Direction of Loads and Restraints

COSMOSWorks now allows users to select an edge or a face to specify the direction of loads and restraints. This functionality saves time when defining loads and restraints by eliminating the extra step of creating a plane or axis. It also provides the users with more flexibility in specifying directions.

Yield IndicatorAn arrow indicating the yield strength now appears in the stress legend. This functionality provides an immediate visual feedback on areas of potential failure without going through the design check wizard.

Iso Value IndicatorAn arrow indicating the iso value now appears in the plot legend. This functionality provides an immediate visual feedback on areas above and below the iso value.

The Iso value indicator is automatically included in the report and printed copies.

Users can analyze O-rings, stents, snap fits etc. Users can easily setup a nonlinear study by simple drag and drop materials, restraints and loads, and mesh from a linear static study.

Specify Preload in a Spring Connector

Spring connectors introduced in COSMOSWorks 2004 are now enhanced to simulate compressive and tensile preload. This functionality allows users to solve practical situations where springs are assembled with initial tension or compression.

Large Displacement, Rotation Capability for Connectors

Pin and spring connectors introduced in COSMOSWorks 2004 are now enhanced to account for large displacements and rotations. This functionality allows users to simulate real life problems in which connectors undergo large displacements and rotations.

Separate Mesh/Contact Folder for Each Study

COSMOSWorks 2005 uses an independent mesh folder and associated contact condition folder, when applicable, for each study. In earlier releases, a common mesh was used for all studies. Users can now change the contact conditions and the mesh of a study without affecting other studies.

Enhanced Mesh Diagnostic ToolThe mesh diagnostic tool now displays the name of the SolidWorks feature associated with the faces that caused mesh failure. This helps users to identify and solve the meshing problem.

Mesh Quality ReportIn COSMOSWorks 2005, you can generate a mesh quality report that includes the aspect ratio and distortion of elements. Plot Contact Pressure Distribution

In COSMOSWorks 2005, users can visualize the magnitude and direction of contact pressure developed between components during contact. This provides users with an insight to the contact process.

List Model Volume Greater Than Specified Limits

Iso plots now display the volume percentage of elements with values greater than or equal to the iso plot value. This helps users identify the extent of the spreading of a certain level of stresses in the model.

Introduction

This chapter provides the highlights of the new functionality in the COSMOSMotion software.

Support for Advanced Surface-Surface/Point-Surface Mates

Advanced SolidWorks mates like surface to surface and point to surface are automatically mapped and converted into joints in COSMOSMotion 2005. This allows users to simulate complex mechanisms like cams etc and to understand mechanism behavior very easily without having to use time consuming 3D contact conditions.

Automatic Constraint Mapping of Subassembly Mates

SolidWorks mate relationships between parts of a flexible sub-assembly can now be automatically mapped and converted into joints in COSMOSMotion 2005. This functionality helps users save time by automatically creating the joints between sub-assembly parts.

COSMOSMotion can now transfer motion loads to COSMOSWorks without an external file and thus making the process seamless. In addition, it can transfer the loads for the entire motion cycle in a single step. Thus there is no need for bookkeeping of the external motion load file. This functionality also allows users, in a single step process, to study the worst case scenario of the entire motion cycle in COSMOSWorks.

Orthotropic BushingsCOSMOSMotion now supports orthotropic bushing that allows the user to define different translational and rotational properties in the x, y, z directions. This allows users to simulate physical bushings that are not homogenous

Expanded Flow Features

Fully Transparent Bodies for Radiation

COSMOSFloWorks 2005 can simulate heat radiation passing through bodies. It is assumed that the body that is transparent to radiation does not participate in the radiation heat transfer (i.e., neither emits nor absorbs heat radiation) and exchanges the heat by convection and conduction only. This functionality helps users save time in analysis by choosing to neglect the surfaces that are not important for radiation heat transfer.

Solar Radiation Dependent on TimePE

In COSMOSFloWorks 2005, both the intensity and direction of solar radiation can be dependent on time. This functionality allows users to solve real life problems involving directional radiation changing in time (e.g., the heat generated by the sun during a day).

Dynamic Preview of Section PlotsCOSMOSFloWorks 2005 allows users to dynamically preview section plots. Users can refresh section plot immediately after they change the plot definition, e.g. change the section plane or plane position, add vectors, change region, etc.

Estimate Flow and Heat Transfer Parameters for a Body

COSMOSFloWorks 2005 now allows the user to obtain values such as Heat Flow, Shear Force, Min/Max Temperature, etc. for each body. This functionality gives users a better understanding of specific results like the maximum temperature, total shear force, etc. in a body.

Automatic Setting of Fully Developed Profile at Inlets

COSMOSFloWorks 2005 automatically computes the velocity profile and turbulent parameters based on whether the inlet flow is fully developed or not. This functionality makes it easier for users to simulate real life problems that require a fully developed velocity profile on inlets. It also eliminates the need to extend the pipe in order to provide adequate length for developing the profile thereby reducing computational resources.

View 3D Profile on a Section PlotCOSMOSFloWorks 2005 allows users to visualize 3D profile of velocity, temperature, etc on a section plot. 3D plots help to interpret and understand the analysis results better.

This functionality helps users reduce the effort to conduct what-if scenarios. It also makes it easier for the users to find the best configuration for the problem under consideration.

Equation Goals Tied to Boundary Conditions

Equation goal in COSMOSFloWorks 2005 can now be a function of parameter values specified as boundary conditions, initial conditions, heat sources, etc. This makes it easier for the user to specify parameters of interest as an equation goal. With the help of this functionality, you do not need to type these values manually any more, instead you simply select the necessary condition.

Automatic Detection of Fluid Volume to Apply Initial Condition

When applying fluid initial conditions to a volume, the user can just select any of the volume’s boundary surfaces and COSMOSFloWorks 2005 automatically detects the inner fluid volume. Using this functionality, there is no need to create auxiliary bodies to define initial condition to fluid volume. This helps users save considerable time and effort.

Creation of Multiple Goals for One Selected Object

Copy Features among ProjectsCOSMOSFloWorks 2005 allows the user to copy a feature into several projects. Users can copy a new input from a project to several projects making it easier and faster to setup multiple What-If scenarios.

New Selection FilterCOSMOSFloWorks 2005 has a new selection filter that allows the user to remove faces of a specific type from the selection list. For example, to select only inner faces of an internal model, you can select the component, then use the filter to remove all external faces. This makes it easier for the user to specify boundary conditions on specific type of faces like interior faces, exterior faces etc.

Moveable Color ChartCOSMOSFloWorks 2005 allows users to dynamically move the color chart across the graphics area. Most often for better viewing of results it is convenient to be able to move the color chart across the screen. Dynamic moving of the color chart makes this possible.

Automatic Definition of Reference Coordinate System

COSMOSFloWorks 2005 automatically defines a coordinate system (CS) associated with a face while defining boundary conditions which requires a reference CS. Users do not need to anymore create CS to apply boundary conditions. This functionality provides a convenient and easier way to define boundary conditions like swirl referenced to the coordinate system of the face they are applied.

Improved Graphical Visualization of Boundary Conditions

COSMOSFloWorks 2005 now displays symbols for symmetry plane, solar radiation, etc. This functionality provides better visualization of applied BC’s. It also gives the user an insight into the direction of solar radiation.

Customized Saving of PlotsCOSMOSFloWorks 2005 allows users to create pre-defined plots (section plots, iso plots etc) and automatically save them as image files once the analysis is completed. Plot Normal and Tangential Velocities

COSMOSFloWorks 2005 allows users to plot the normal and tangential velocity. Normal and tangential velocity plots help in better understanding of results for rotational flow problems.

Complete Input Data Report During Solving

COSMOSFloWorks 2005 makes the complete input data available on the screen during the calculation process. If mistakes are found in the input then the user can immediately correct them and restart the calculations.

Improved Algorithm for Automatic Solver Termination

A new algorithm has been implemented in COSMOSFloWorks 2005 to stop the solver once convergence has been achieved. In prior versions the solver continues for a while after convergence is achieved. In COSMOSFloWorks 2005 the solver is terminated as soon as convergence is achieved thereby reducing the calculation time.

Postprocessor AccelerationIn COSMOSFloWorks 2005 the time taken for result visualization has been reduced. This saves you time and allows faster export of trajectory track data.

Improved Calculations for Transient AnalysisPE

In COSMOSFloWorks 2005 the manual time step for a transient analysis can now depend on the time and it adapts with the progress of solution. This functionality allows faster solution of time-dependent problems that have regimes with very different characteristic times.

Refine Certain Cell Type in the Entire Computational Domain

In COSMOSFloWorks 2005 users can select a particular cell type (fluid cells, partial cells etc.) and then choose to refine them over the entire computational domain. In previous versions users could only refine cells locally. This functionality enhances the mesh control feature and helps achieve faster convergence over the entire domain.

Extract Computational Mesh from Results File

COSMOSFloWorks 2005 can export computational mesh from the calculated results. It is useful if the problem’s initial mesh is optimized during the calculation and you want to start a new calculation with the optimum mesh settings. This results in better accuracy and faster convergence.

Accelerate Particle TracingParticle Study Tool in COSMOSFloWorks 2005 allows users to save particle data in the result file reducing the time taken to generate particle tracing.
