BBB’s multi-phase renovation at the Apollo includes the meticulous restoration, creative reinterpretation, and expansion of one of New York City’s most fabled theaters.

The Apollo Theater, originally constructed in 1913, is a longtime performance hub in Harlem with national, state, and city landmark status. In 2001, BBB was commissioned to oversee a phased restoration that draws from the theater’s 1940s aesthetic—the era chosen as most representative of its impact on local, national, and international culture. BBB’s work involved restoration, renovation, and internal expansion. In the initial phases of work, BBB focused on the restoration of the historic 125th street terra cotta facade, marquee, and blade sign; the restoration of the original cornice; the installation of a new roof; and the addition of a new storefront, entrance doors, and box office facilities. The next phase focused on the theater interiors including updates to the interior finishes; the addition of new seating; enhancements to backstage support elements; and the integration of new building and life safety systems.
