C. Maths Factors, Prime and Composite numbers.

Below you will find a Times Table game ‘Fast Facts’.

• Play the game at least 3 times with someone. As you win a hand, write down the product of the times table. Use the table below to set out your findings. The one below is an example only. Insert your products (answers) at the top/bottom of the table. Your table may need to be extended according to your results.

• What has been your most common answer? • What has been your least common answer? • What was your most common multiple that occurred? Is this the same question as one

of the questions about? Explain. • What answers would not occur at all unless you see an Ace card? (only up to 10 x 10)

What are these numbers called? • If you were going to play Bingo, what numbers would you choose to place on a grid

4 by 4? Why? Use your findings below to help justify your answer. Use phrases such as: The most common product I found was…. The number/s with the most factors is/are….. I found that…. We both found that…… You shouldn’t include numbers that are/have ……… Prime numbers…….. Some composite numbers occur……..

Product eg 21 42 36 24 96 88

person 1 ⏐⏐⏐⏐ ⏐⏐⏐ ⏐ ⏐⏐⏐ ⏐⏐⏐⏐ ⏐⏐⏐⏐

person 2 ⏐⏐ ⏐⏐⏐⏐ ⏐⏐ ⏐⏐⏐⏐ ⏐ ⏐⏐⏐⏐

Product 27 36 15 12 8 35 Think about these questions…… write some conclusions in your book.

• If you have two even numbers multiplied together, what is common about each answer? • If you have two odd numbers multiplied together, what is common about each answer? • If you have one odd number and one even number multiplied together, what is common

about each answer.

GAME Fast facts

This card game is suitable for 2 players.

If you do not have a packet of cards at home, organize with your teacher to borrow one. Alternatively use the opportunity to play the game during homework club time. (See displays in the corridor)

Materials

1 x deck of cards with the picture cards removed. Aces = 1.

Instructions

1. Deal out half the cards to each player with the cards facing down in a pile. 2. Both players take the card on the top of their pile and lay it face up in the middle. 3. Multiply the factors together. ie 4 and 9 = 36 4. The first player to call out the product of the two cards wins both cards.

5. If it is a draw, the cards are left on the table. Turn 2 more cards over and whichever player wins, picks up all the cards in the middle.

6. The winner is the player with the most cards once all the cards have been used.
