WELCOME

Welcome to the APO Connecting programme for 2016, our extensive range of events, activities and opportunities for Aucklanders of all ages.

Our musical education, community engagement and outreach initiatives, under the umbrella of APO Connecting, are an important and valuable aspect of the work we do. We offer a myriad of opportunities for people to connect with the orchestra and it is wonderful to see the effect music can have throughout the Auckland community. Seeding a life-long love of music in our youngest members as they conduct-a-long at an APO 4 Kids concert, giving children in schools the chance to meet and work closely with our musicians to improve their musical understanding and abilities and nurturing the next generation of musicians through advanced teaching and support. Many of the activities we present through APO Connecting wouldn’t be possible without the support of our funders, sponsors and partners. These organisations and individuals continue to show commitment to this programme and our desire to share orchestral music with the community. We are grateful for their support and assistance in the work that we do. I encourage you to take a look through the brochure and find out more about the opportunities for you, your students or your family to connect with the APO and participate in some exciting musical activities. We look forward to seeing you in 2016.

Works should be 12–15 minutes and will culminate in a concert performance in the first half of 2017.

SISTEMA AOTEAROASistema Aotearoa celebrates its fifth birthday in April with a range of exciting events and concerts. Sistema Aotearoa is now established as a vibrant and involved part of Otara; since the programme started almost 2,000 individual children have received high quality group-based orchestral instrument tuition through one or more of its teaching strands. In 2016 Sistema Aotearoa will become an independent charitable trust.

Using orchestral music making as a conduit for social change, children learn from early childhood through to late adolescence, bringing their musicianship to a high level and enhancing all aspects of their development. As the students from the first intake in 2011 move into intermediate schooling, they also move into leadership roles within the programme. In addition to orchestral playing, many of the older students will participate in chamber groups as they master self-led performance and develop new skills in collaboration to decide on the overall sound and musicality of their performance.

Inspired by the El Sistema movement, Sistema Aotearoa is administered by the APO and supported by Creative New Zealand, the Chisholm Whitney Family Charitable Trust and SkyCity Auckland Community Trust.

SISTEMA NZ CONCERT PRESENTATION
