Bernard L. Weinstein is Associate Director of the Maguire Energy Institute and an Adjunct Professor of Business Economics in the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. From 1989 to 2009 he was Director of the Center for Economic Development and Research at the University of North Texas, where he is now an Emeritus Professor of Applied Economics. Dr. Weinstein studied public administration at Dartmouth College and received his A.B. in 1963. After a year of study at the London School of Economics and Political Science, he began graduate work in economics at Columbia University, receiving an M.A. in 1966 and a Ph.D. in 1973.

Dr. Weinstein has authored or co-authored numerous books, monographs and articles on the subjects of economic development, energy security, public policy and taxation. Dr. Weinstein has been a consultant to many companies, non-profit organizations and government agencies, and he testifies frequently before legislative, regulatory and judicial bodies. He is currently a panelist with the Western Blue Chip Economic Forecast. Dr. Weinstein is a member of the Dallas-Fort Worth Association for Business Economics and serves on the boards of directors of Beal Bank Texas and Beal Bank USA.

METROPCS DALLAS MARATHON AID STATION

APICS hosted a water station again this year for the Dallas Marathon. We had a new location this year, and managed 2 different mile markers at our station. I am a returning volunteer, with this being my third time to volunteer. It’s something I enjoy and look forward to doing each year. There’s a lot of work that goes into the water station. Desiree is fantastic at keeping us organized and on task. From the time we arrive, we have to start setting up the tables and trash cans, and setting out the cups. We have to mix the Gatorade concentrate with water, and then

put it in pitchers to fill all of the cups; the same goes for the water. Another group cuts up oranges. Once all of it is prepared, the most fun part is when you get to stand along the street and cheer on the runners. I get a sense of accomplishment when someone takes my water. Meanwhile, the supply chain is in the background, refilling more cups and making sure we never run out.

There’s a definite technique and posture involved in offering water, and the fast runners don’t even slow down to grab water. They try to get water from the first person, but sometimes it gets knocked off and gets the next water person behind them wet! The runners try again with someone else along the line. We were lucky this year to have good weather. When its freezing cold, getting water splashed on you doesn’t feel too good!

Watching the runners is inspiring, and I wonder how long they trained to be able to complete the race in a good time. Even the slow walkers who look like they are completely exhausted by the time they get to our station are inspiring. Kudos for the hard work and finishing the race! No matter the time, finishing a marathon is definitely not an easy task.

We always need volunteers to help. Come out next year and be part of the fun!

SCOTTISH RITE TREE DECORATION

The Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children is one of the nation's leading pediatric centers for the treatment of orthopedic conditions, certain related neurological disorders and learning disorders, such as dyslexia. On December 2, 2014 TSRH held their annual holiday tree decorating event.

APICS is a proud sponsor at this event, and next year marks our 20th year! Our tree is in the Movement Science Laboratory and our theme is Toy Story. This year, participants were; Dawn Adams, Paul Hawthorn, Cristie Capps, Steve McKay, and Sandra Eutsler.

The evening started with an official lighting of the Christmas tree in the hospital’s main gathering area. Refreshments, old-fashioned Christmas band, Santa, and many local groups were on hand to decorate trees throughout the hospital. After decorating the trees, we are treated to a meal and an opportunity to stay and stroll around the hospital to view the 30+ trees that had been decorated.

CPIM CERTIFICATION CLASSES STARTING SOON

The APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) program offers in-depth education for individuals in the operations management profession who wish to improve their knowledge of production and inventory management. The APICS CPIM curriculum concentrates on tools, techniques, and knowledge for production and inventory management. Classes are offered periodically throughout the year. (Current schedule below) They provide a guided forum for discussion and exchange of ideas with peers. The schedule below shows start date. Most classes are held twice a week at the same time. Course fees include tuition, course materials and access to an online practice and assessment system and must be registered and paid one week prior to class start date. A 10% late/expedite fee is required if registration is within 7 days of first day of class and late registrants are always welcomed. All classes will be at the UTD campus in Richardson, TX.
