AbouT usapiary began with four writers and one question: Why don't more Philadelphians know they're living in the middle of a literary renaissance? Outside of Philly, our city is praised as one of the liveliest, most innovative, and most affordable cities where a young writer can live and work in the United States. But who would tell that story within city limits? And more importantly, who would show city newcomers, young people, and existing arts audiences how to join in the fun?

We knew Philadelphia needed a way to hear from its myriad talented writers, and a central place to connect with its exhilarating—and welcoming—literary scene. So we decided to give it a shot.

Twice a year, our large volunteer staff curates and publishes apiary Magazine, an eye-catching showcase of the best local writing from every corner of Philadelphia. And all year long, we maintain the single most comprehensive Philadelphia literary events calendar on the web; release work by and interviews with local writers on our website; produce a YouTube series, entitled apiary mixtape; and run workshops and readings in collaboration with local arts organizations.

“A respected force on the local lit scene, apiary Magazine provides a much-needed platform for writers of all styles and backgrounds.”— City Paper, Spring 2012

“apiary is working to grow the garden, cross-pollinate, replace the words literary magazine with the word community— the word us.”— Philadelphia Inquirer, Spring 2012

“The illustrated semiannual quickly attracted top names in the city’s literary community … but even more impressive are apiary’s young contributors, who represent the great diversity of culture to be found in Philadelphia.”— Flying Kite Media, Fall 2011

Whether quiet bookworms or social butterflies, our highly literate readers are actively engaged in their own education. They are very likely to attend First Friday events, open mics, workshops, and conferences. Classes or services that could help to more fully realize their own creativity are of great interest to our readers. We hear over and over that apiary Magazine and our literary calendar act as a gateway to the local arts and literary scene for college students, Philly newcomers, and prodigal writers seeking to finally pursue the artistic path they’ve put off for years.

Philadelphia itself is important to our readers. As supporters of, and often participants in, the flourishing local arts scene, they feel strongly tied to the city and its future, and are likely to consciously choose to buy local food and patronize businesses in their neighborhoods. Intellectually curious and Philly-proud, they like to feel “in the know” about new local arts, dining, and shopping opportunities.

“Congratulations on producing a wonderful journal! We have so enjoyed reading the poems and fiction, and seeing the artwork. It’s a delight and a tribute to your skill and caring about creating a fine community of artists and an audience for them. We had a ball at the launch. It was terrific. What more could anyone hope for!?”

— Betti Kahn, copyeditor, apiary reader

“The journal gives budding young writers the chance to be published alongside already established writers. It’s important. It’s necessary…”

— Eric Smith, Geekadelphia founder, apiary reader

“Apiary is a giant literary disco ball spinning above Philly. It reflects the light of Philadelphia’s distinct voices. When I was done I was amazed that so many different and wonderful people are in one place.”

— Jacob Winterstein, student activist, apiary reader

DIsTrIbuTIonapiary Magazine is a free semi-annual publication with a circulation of 30,000. We distribute magazines in highly-trafficked venues frequented by our target audience, including independent bookstores, coffeeshops, Free Library of Philadelphia branches, performing arts venues, cultural nonprofits, restaurants, and bars.

We cultivate strong relationships with our distribution venues, in order to ensure that their staff is familiar with the magazine, and that they notify their followers that the magazine has arrived. We put a great deal of care into the creation of the magazine, and make sure to do the same with its dissemination throughout Philadelphia.

“I came across a pile of apiary Magazines in a local coffee shop. I have always had a passion for reading and writing, so I quickly snatched up a copy. I read through the magazine in one sitting and was so impressed with it that as soon as I got back to my apartment I researched how to submit my own work to apiary, and used the calendar to choose a reading to visit next.”— Melissa Hamilton, college student

“We have run out of your magazine. Here in the Literature Dept. at the Central Branch of the Free Library we were given copies of your magazine, which we placed in our ‘Writers’ Corner.’ They went like hot latkes. We look forward to receiving more next week.”— Kay, supervisor at the Free Library of Philadelphia
