API 5L Line Pipe Physical Properties

API 5L Line Pipe Physical Properties Line pipe grade designations come from API Spec 5L Specification for Line Pipe. Standard Line Pipe has grade designation A and B. Stronger grades have the designation X followed by the specified minimum yield strength of the pipe steel, measured in kilopounds per square inch (abbreviated ksi), e.g. X60 for pipe having a mi nimum yield strength of 60 ksi. See the table below for the standard available grades. Line Pipe Physical Properties API 5L Grade Yield Strength min. (ksi) Tensile Strength min. Values shown for 0.2 sq. in. specimen.  Line pipe mechanical testing usually omits Reduction of Area (RA) measurement reporting, and  Charpy V-Notch (CVN) testing. This prevents use of this pipe as body material above 36 ksi yield strength for   API Spec 6Aequipment without retesting for Reduction of Area, and in the case of l ow temperature service, Charpy V-Notch testing as well. CAUTION: Do not confuse pipe manufactured to meet ASTM A106 Grade A or B as interchangeab le with API 5L Grade A or B without close observation of the mill test reports. The two pipe specifications overlap, but vary. Pipe may or may not meet both specs.  For a chart of Carbon Steel Pipe Dimensions and Weights, Click Here.

Pipe is made of a wide variety of materials - like galvanized steel, black steel, copper, cast iron, concrete, and various plastics such as ABS, PVC, CPVC, polyethylene, polybutylene and more.Pipes are identified by "nominal" or "trade" names that are loosely related to the actual dimensions. For instance, a2-inchgalvanized steel pipe has an inside diameter of about2 1/8 inchesand an outside diameter of about2 5/8 inches. In plumbing pipe size is referred to as nominal pipe size -NPS, or "Nominal Pipe Size". The metric equivalent is called DN or "diametre nominel". The metric designations conform to International Standards Organization (ISO) usage and apply to all plumbing, natural gas, heating oil, and miscellaneous piping used in buildings. The use of NPS does not conform to American Standard pipe designations where the term NPS means "National Pipe Thread Straight".Diameter NominalDN(mm)Nominal Pipe SizeNPS(inches)
