It’s the story of a young boy, David, and a giant Philistine soldier, Goliath. It’s a story of what can happen when we have faith in God and a story that illustrates how we can overcome the trials of this world. Everyone has something they struggle with, or to put it in the terms of the story, everyone has a Goliath, meaning something that seems impossible to handle. More often than not, when we face our “Goliath,” we act like the Israelite army. We look at it, deem it impossible to deal with, and try to solve the problem on our own. We forget the promises that God has given us and we look for the strength to solve the problem within ourselves, we don’t look to God. David looked to God in this story, and because He had faith in God and believed He could do anything, he was able to conquer Goliath, not by his own strength, but by the strength of God that worked through him. When we have faith in God and live our lives by that faith, we can face the toughest “Goliaths.” We can face whatever life brings because we trust in the God who created the universe, the same God who gave David the strength to conquer Goliath. Safety and Main Stage Seating Tips1. Have at least one adult at your campsite at all times.

2. Adults should accompany Pathfinders at all times.

3. When saving seats at the Nighttime Program arena, remember the rule of: seat one and save one. Only one person can save one seat for one other person. Do not leave your seating unattended. All unattended items left will be taken to Lost and Found or thrown away. Portable chairs are strongly recommended. People on tarps cannot see as well and take up a lot of space.

Chelsea Manasaco and Bri Dale, identical twins, are both onstage hosts in the mainstage nighttime program. This will not be their first time at Oshkosh. They both attended the 2004 Faith on Fire Camporee and were able to act in the 2014 Forever Faithful drama production as the young (Chelsea) and old (Bri) versions of the Iltani character. While neither of them expected to be involved in the Chosen camporee, they were excited and somewhat surprised to be approached for this position. “Even though my involvement in the last camporee was an amazing experience, I figured that when camporee 2019 rolled around, I would be 27, working, and prob-ably unable to be involved again. It’s really cool that God somehow worked it out for both of us to be back at Oshkosh again in this position!” says Bri. When asked what they are most looking forward to about this camporee, Chelsea says she’s excited to interact with those behind the stage and with different clubs as they work on the Day-in-Review videos. They are both glad they can be onstage hosts together. “We work much better together than apart,” states Bri. Both twins are very happy that this camporee will be about David. “I think David’s story is one that every Christian should know. It is a beautiful picture of God’s grace and strength through our weakness that serves as a reminder that God never gives up on us,” says Chelsea. “David is the black sheep of the group,” Bri adds. “He messed up big time (on more than one occasion), and spilled his less than ‘joyful-all-the-time’ heart out in the Psalms. But he is a ‘man after God’s own heart.’ He’s real, and his story is messy and ugly at times, but it shines a light on a God who is merciful and loving, and how even a totally imperfect human is never too far away from redemption.” Ultimately Chelsea and Bri hope that they can impact others through

their role, and that the Camporee will strengthen other’s faith in Jesus. “I think standing up in front of everyone for a week has little lasting impact in and of itself. I feel the impact comes when those who see us and listen to us each night see who we are and how we live off stage, when they see who we are out of the spotlight,” Chelsea explains. “I love seeing people gather from all over the world and seeing how they experience Jesus differently,” Bri says. “I obviously hope that people come away from camporee closer to Jesus, but I also really hope that people take the time and opportunity to learn from someone else’s culture. I hope they don’t just stay

in their comfortable groups, but that they venture out and meet new people from different countries and try to see life through their eyes.” After Camporee, Chelsea and Bri will return home to Chattanooga, Tennessee. They live two miles apart—Bri with her husband, Jimmy, and Chelsea with her husband, Jared. Chelsea currently works as a nurse in the emergency department while Bri remotely operates a malnutrition project in Congo and works occasionally as a nurse at a local hospital. Bri and Jimmy are excited to welcome twins into the world in January. During their spare time, Chelsea and Bri love spending time in nature. They also both enjoy going on adventures with their little pal, Ivey, who is 5 years old with Down syndrome. “She is pretty much always up for any adventure and makes life so much more fun and exciting,” says Chelsea. Even though they have similar hobbies, they do have different favorite Bible verses. Chelsea’s is Proverbs 3:5–6 and Bri’s is Ecclesiastes 3:11.

The Youth Ministry Department of the Hong Kong-Macao Conference is excited to be able to attend this year’s Camporee with members from five different Pathfinder clubs around Hong Kong. They have a group of 37 people overall, with 23 Pathfinders and 14 teachers and their family members. The Youth Ministry Department decided to send clubs to Camporee in 2017 and worked on applying for visas and taking all the necessary steps to travel throughout 2018. “We offered countless prayers and prayed again and again for mem-bers who were having difficulties. Finally, all members and teachers were successful. Thank God!” says Anna Fu, one of the group’s Path-finder leaders. In order to come to Camporee, each of the five clubs planned fundraising activities so they could raise enough money to pay part

of the visa fees. Their fundrais-ing activities were unique and included activities such as setting up a fundraising booth at a fair (Kowloon Pathfinder Club) and selling oat milk (Tuen Mun Club). These efforts taught the Pathfind-ers unique skills in cooperation, organization, communication and how to promote products. When asked about their fund-raising efforts, Anna says, “Success is the result of learning and trying again and again after failure. We have the same goal because we know that we are not alone. Our Pathfinders can attend the world-class event of the International Pathfinder Camporee and witness the love and power of God in every corner of the world.”

Baptisms at the Chosen Camporee

“Chosen,” a Guide® book about David, available at CamporeeGuide ® , everyone’s favorite story magazine for 10- to 14-year-olds, has developed a new comic book, “Chosen,” just in time for the International Pathfinder Camporee. Authored by Tompaul Wheeler and illustrated by Mariano Santillan, “Chosen” features David, the shepherd boy who goes head-to-head with Goliath, a giant enemy soldier who challenged David’s people for 40 days to send out a soldier brave enough to fight him. David had had enough of the giant’s taunts and volunteered to face the enemy. Where does a small shepherd boy armed with only a few little stones and a slingshot get the courage to face a mean, giant warrior? Find out in “Chosen” what plans God had for David—and what plans He has for you! Each illustrated story is followed by an activity page and Scripture references that help you apply young David’s story to your own life. Pick up a copy at the Adventist Book Center booth in Hangar A, Booth 107. Be sure to stop by the Guide

® booth (same location) to meet the editors, authors and other Guidesters!

GoliathGershom Bandy, a nurs-ing student at Antillean Adventist University, is starring as Goliath in this year’s Chosen Internation-al Camporee. Gershom started to en-joy drama after the 2004 Faith on Fire Camporee.

“Drama helped me get out of my shell,” he says. Ger-shom’s involvement with drama continued in high school through drama class and various plays.

After he attended the Courage to Stand Camporee in 2009 he began to write his own dramas and scripts. In 2014 he was even part of the Forever Faithful Camporee where he played Cyaxares and Gobryas. Since Forever Faithful, Gershom knew that he wanted to be a part of the Chosen drama production. He auditioned to be a part of the core cast, but didn’t make it. At this point, Gershom was pretty stressed because he did not have a ticket to come to Campo-ree. After trying several other options, he eventually called Heidi Littell and was told that he could audi-tion for Goliath. He started practicing, sent in his

materials, and waited. One Sunday morning he got the call to be Goliath. “I took it in. I couldn’t believe it,” he says. “Having the privilege and honor to portray this iconic villain is surreal.” Gershom is excited to play a part in bringing these Bible characters to life for the Pathfinders. As an active Pathfinder when he was younger, he knows how influen-tial these Camporee productions can be to Pathfinders. When asked what he thinks about his character, Gershom says, “Goliath embodies all the problems, the struggles, the storms we face in life. But that one stone, it’s like a solid rock. We are to stand on the solid rock of God. Every giant will fall, every moun-tain will move when you put your faith completely in God. God is fighting for you.” Some verses that Gershom thinks really speak to the heart of this idea are Exodus 14:14: “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace” (NKJV) and 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (NKJV). After Camporee, Gershom will continue to work on his nursing degree. During his spare time he likes to write skits and dramas, read the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy, and serve as a youth leader at his home church. He is currently working on a podcast that will be a dramatization and devotional.

Wheels, Hills & SkillsAround 11 a.m. on Tuesday, nine riders—three adults and six teens—entered Camporee grounds after biking a long journey from Ashe-ville, North Carolina. These riders were with Bike for Life, a sponsored cycling minis-try of the Carolina Conference. In addition to biking to camporees they do six-day tours during off-Camporee years which take them to places like the Outer Banks and South Carolina coast, South Carolina to Florida and the Ohio to Erie Trail from Cleveland to Cin-cinnati with the Ohio Pathfinders. This will be the fourth camporee they have biked to since Discover the Power in 1999, and their 20th

year of riding. Kathy New, the adult group leader, has ridden on every ride and most of the teens and young adults have ridden on multiple rides. To prepare for this journey Bike for Life encouraged all the

participants to start training in March or April. For this Campo-ree, they also held three group training rides, the last one being from July 10–12. This year the team started

on July 28, and passed through North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. They rode ap-proximately 50 miles per day, and took two Sabbaths off. Spencer Zinke, a Pathfinder from the Greenville North Stars club described how he really en-joyed a ten-mile downhill section somewhere in Kentucky. He has ridden with Bike for Life on other rides, but this was his first time riding to Camporee. While it is indeed long, this jour-ney is a valuable experience for the teens that helps them learn how to set goals, train, ride long distances, use their equipment, and work

together as a team. “It is so much fun watching the kids and adults develop life skills. The friendships that are made are forever. We have also had one marriage from teens that met and fell in love. I know the sense of accomplishment of completing the journey will make the work worthwhile,” says Gerald New, chair of Bike for Life. Heidi Zinke, one of the team cooks and riders says, “The trip takes a lot of teamwork. You re-ally have to depend on the people around you when you’re riding close. I would say that it’s the strongest team building experi-ence of any team Pathfinder event I’ve ever done.”
