The Arnold P. Gold Foundation believes

that empathetic, patient-centered care is the only

acceptable standard of care. Our strategy is to bolster the

resolve of health care professionals to resist the pressures that

undermine their ability to provide the kind of care everyone

deserves to receive when sick. The great majority of young

people who are attracted to medicine as a career enter the

profession with a deep-seated passion to help others.

The Gold Foundation’s goal is to keep that passion alive

throughout their education, training and practice, and to

emphasize the critical importance of the human relationship

between practitioner and patient.

Dear Friends and Supporters,The advent of personalized or precision medicine where risks are assessed, diagnoses made, prevention practiced, and treatments prescribed based on an individual’s unique genome portends enormous changes for health care delivery throughout this century. How exciting and yet ironic that the business that has arisen to provide modern care threatens to draw us further from what is truly personal about health care — the relationship between patient and practitioner. Embarrassing news reports filled with descriptions of the current business and methods of our health care system – like Charles Simic’s “Healthcare: The New American Sadism” — appear daily. This state of affairs makes our clarion call more critical than ever. Our growth and acquisition of new partners during the past couple of years have helped to strengthen and amplify that call. These partners have advanced our mission by participating in our programs, joining our advisory boards, and supporting our message.

We have created new channels to humanize medicine. Our creation of an annual Solidarity Day for Compassionate Patient Care has been endorsed by the U.S. Senate. Our Academic Medicine Gold Partners Council of schools and teaching hospitals has supported us with a new institutional solidarity across the nation. Our newly established Research Institute is adding to the growing body of evidence that compassionate health care is not just a nicety, but a necessity. Study after study now demonstrates that humanistic care offers the triple aim of improving health, improving health care, and lowering costs.

But none of our work would be possible without our most valued partners — you, our donors. Without a quarter century of your voice, your support, the Foundation would have remained only a great idea. Your donations have allowed us to continue to sound the clarion call for humanism in medicine and to become a leading national health philanthropy. With your support we have partnered with the Association of American Medical Colleges and other leading health institutions to transform medical education. Ninety-six percent of medical schools now employ one or more Gold Foundation programs. We thank you for your belief that what we do is of value to the American people and for your continuing loyalty and support.

With this report, we honor our past accomplishments as we describe our future. As many of you know, our success has allowed us to begin a new chapter in the history of the foundation in the belief that we can help shape 21st century health care. With the expectation of team care and the increasing role of nurses, physician assistants and other professionals, our work is evolving to ensure that all health care professionals provide optimal, patient-centered, humanistic care.

With our warmest wishes to you for the best of health and health care,

Richard I. Levin, MD, President & CEO

Leadership New CEO at the helm: Passing the Torch of Humanism in MedicineAfter 25 years of remarkable leadership and success under founders Sandra Gold, Ed.D., and Arnold P. Gold, M.D., the Arnold P. Gold Foundation (APGF) welcomed Richard I. Levin, M.D., as President and CEO in August 2012. An internationally recognized physician scientist, scholar, cardiologist and educator, Dr. Levin brings to APGF noteworthy experience leading academic medical institutions and volunteer health organizations. Dr. Levin’s vision, experience and leadership, coupled with the continued guidance and support of Sandra and Arnold Gold, Board Chair Jordan Cohen, M.D., and the dedicated Board of Trustees, will be invaluable to the next chapter of APGF’s development.

The White Coat Ceremony for Nurses: Partnering with the American Association of Colleges of NursingOptimal health care in the 21st century requires a culture of respect that includes every member of the health care team as well as the patient. To foster this goal, our expanded mission promotes humanistic care among all health care professionals in training and in practice. In 2013 with our new partner, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), we began creating signature programs that recognize nurses and nursing students for compassionate, humanistic care, mirroring what APGF has done successfully within academic medicine. Starting with a pilot of White Coat Ceremonies for nurses in the autumn of 2014 and following with new research grants for studying humanistic nursing care in early 2015, our partnership with AACN will bring a new dimension to our work. We extend special thanks to Mike and Elaine Adler for providing a generous leadership gift to establish the APGF – AACN partnership.

InnovationAPGF Research Institute: Proving the Value of Humanistic Health CareEstablished in 2012, the APGF Research Institute aims to discover and disseminate knowledge about humanizing medicine to improve health and the human condition.

The Research Institute applies three strategies to achieve this mission:

• Support and conduct original research in the field of humanism in health care.

• Collect, analyze and disseminate existing research data on humanistic health care practices.

• Assess APGF programs.

In 2013, with a generous $800,000 grant from the Russell Berrie Foundation, the Research Institute funded 24 rigorous proposals to map and synthesize existing research in the field with the goal of producing thoughtful discussions on the evidence for humanistic health care.

In addition, the Picker Institute donated $250,000 to establish The Jean and Harvey Picker Directorship and solidify the future of the Research Institute. Plans for 2014 include a request for proposals of original research to further investigate the value of health care delivered with respect, dignity and compassion.

Humanizing Medicine: A New Blog for Community DialogueSince its creation in July 2013, our blog, Humanizing Medicine (humanizingmedicine.org), has quickly become a hub for thoughts and information about humanism in health care for professionals and patients alike. In its first year of operation, Humanizing Medicine has garnered almost 60,000 page views. Many posts are written by guest bloggers about issues such as patient-practitioner boundaries, the impact of community service on medical students, and how to better communicate with your health care practitioners.

Add your voice to the voices of doctors, nurses, medical and nursing students, patients, family members and patient advocates.

InnovationWith our closely aligned missions, the Picker Institute and APGF have always been natural partners. Beginning in 2008, we collaborated on the Picker-Gold Graduate Medical Education (GME) Challenge Grant Program to bring the patient’s voice into residency training. Picker-Gold GME Challenge Grants support the research and development of successful patient-centered care initiatives and best practices in the education of our country’s future practicing physicians.

In 2012, Picker Institute transitioned the program fully into APGF’s care with a generous grant of $250,000. With these funds, APGF will honor the spirit of our shared mission and continue to sponsor the Challenge Grants. We are grateful to continue the legacy of such a worthy partner.

“It is as important to foster humanism in healers as it is their scientific and technical expertise… It is essential that this aspect of Harvey Picker’s legacy be preserved and defended. Fortunately, the Gold Foundation is a trusted partner whose shared values and expertise guarantee continued growth, and nourishment of humanism in medicine.”

~ Dr. David Leach, Picker Board of Trustees, former Executive Director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education

ExcellenceThe 5th Biennial Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) Conference in October 2012 marked the 10-year anniversary of the Society. During it’s first decade, GHHS grew at a rapid pace, establishing 100 medical school chapters and spreading the message that care must be as compassionate as it is clinically excellent.

The conference featured distinguished keynote speakers including Jerome Groopman, M.D., Dina and Raphael Recanati Chair of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of Experimental Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; Pamela Hartzband, M.D., Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and Attending Physician in the Division of Endocrinology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; and MacArthur Fellow Pedro “Joe” Greer, M.D., Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Chair of the Department of Humanities, Health and Society at the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, who wowed the nearly 300 guests with his speech, “Why We Should…Save the World.” The conference inspired all those who attended by recalling the purpose of health care: to serve patients and their families.

ExcellenceIn October 2013, APGF’s inaugural Golden Thread Gala took place in the medical mecca of Boston to honor exemplars of humanism in medicine. More than 350 guests gathered at WBGH, Boston’s public television studios, to celebrate Ronald A. Arky, M.D., inspirational Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and beloved mentor to generations of medical students, and Mary Fisher, artist, author, international HIV advocate and founder of the non-profit, Mary Fisher Clinical AIDS Research and Education Fund.

The Leadership Committee, led by Co-Chairs Maggie Gold Seelig, APGF Trustee Jonathan Seelig, Maureen Strafford, M.D., and Alex McDonald, and comprised of more than

70 local APGF friends and supporters, created a magical evening filled with music, stories of compassionate health care and good will that raised nearly $300,000 to support our work.

Dr. Arky’s $100,000 pledge to fund APGF’s Pearl Birnbaum Hurwitz Humanism in Health Care Award was a highlight of the evening. Starting in 2014, this award, named in honor of Trustee Jonathan Seelig’s grandmother and friend of Dr. Arky, will be presented annually to a woman who exemplifies humanism and has advanced, through her scholarship, advocacy, leadership or work, the well-being of vulnerable or underserved populations in the health care arena.

“This new resident/fellow chapter is a way of bringing these physicians together to support and infuse humanism across all levels of medical training and into all training hospitals in Buffalo.”

~ Daniel Sheehan, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Pediatric Pulmonologist, Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo

GHHS Residency Chapter Pilot: Reinforcing Compassion during a Critical TransitionThe transition from medical student to resident is a critical time to safeguard a sense of compassion. To help medical students maintain their belief in the value of humanistic health care during this challenging transition, GHHS began a pilot program of 10 residency chapters in 2012.

APGF Humanism in Medicine Lecture: Highlighting Humanism in Academic Medicine In 2012, APGF Trustee Abraham Verghese, M.D., Senior Associate Chair and Professor for the Theory and Practice of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and best-selling author, gave the annual Jordan J. Cohen Humanism in Medicine Lecture at the Association of American Medical Colleges Annual Meeting. His presentation, “From Books to Bedside: The History and the Evolution of Physical Diagnosis Texts,” focused on the importance of bedside medicine at a time when technologies meant to enhance care can often take a doctor’s attention away from the patient.

The following year, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author Anna Quindlen enthralled conference attendees with her lecture, “Health Care in an Information Age: How Doctors, Nurses and Consumers Can Make One Another Better.” Quindlen’s eloquent lecture emphasized the patient’s voice in the doctor-patient relationship and highlighted the critical importance of health professionals truly knowing their patients.

InspirationIn 2011, Randall Friese, M.D., Director, Clinical Research, and Associate Medical Director at the University of Arizona Medical Center Trauma, Critical Care, Burn and Emergency Surgery Center was the first physician to treat Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords after she was shot. The medical community responded strongly when Dr. Friese reported that his most important actions that day were holding her hand and reassuring her that she would be cared for in the hospital. To honor that spirit of caring, GHHS established February 14 as Solidarity Day for Compassionate Patient Care for medical schools and other health care institutions to demonstrate the importance of compassionate, patient-centered care.

In 2013, the late Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) led the U.S. Senate to unanimously pass a resolution to declare February 14 National Solidarity Day for Compassionate Patient Care on the Congressional calendar. With each year, the number of GHHS Chapters and other institutions participating in Solidarity Day activities continues to grow. Recent activities have included:

• Lunch and Learn, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) Doctors at UMDNJ found poetry to be the perfect medium to express the deep nuances of compassionate care to commemorate Solidarity Day. Students also shared reflections on their experiences with compassionate care

and distributed buttons symbolizing humanism in medicine during the lunch session.

• Just 5 Minutes, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York (SUNY Buffalo) With packed schedules, many think it is impossible to spend extra time with individual patients. Students, faculty and staff at SUNY Buffalo proved that it is possible to invest additional time with their patients to learn more about their patients’ lives as part of the Just 5 Minutes campaign. These five purposeful minutes were spent listening to patients’ personal stories and engaging with them beyond their illness.

National Solidarity Day for Compassionate Patient Care: Marking a Milestone on the Congressional Calendar

“Solidarity Day, inspired by our own Dr. Randy Friese, had special meaning for our chapter since we were so immersed in the events surrounding the January tragedy…. Celebrating the positive actions of our medical personnel, and humanistic caregivers everywhere, helped us begin healing….We felt supported by our own community and by GHHS chapters around the country and beyond. We truly felt the solidarity.”

~ Andreas A. Theodorou M.D., FCCM, FAAP Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and GHHS Chapter Advisor, University of Arizona-Tucson College of Medicine
