Aperture Priority – sets your aperture

while all else goes auto…auto…auto

It’s the Av on the top of your dial.

What does it do?

It enables you to set the aperture

and all else goes automatic. Your

ISO and your shutter goes on auto

mode. But even if you change your

lighting, your aperture stays the

same.

Wait there’s more.

Mrs. Gilder hates auto anything,

but has to teach you this.

Aperture, lens length and distance

assignment.

As you know, the lower the

aperture, the lighter the shot and

the lower the depth of field.

Lower the number. Less in focus.

Lower the number, more light.

Items.

Exercise 1.

You are to photograph 3 items.

I have jewelry. Not real, but stuff

to photograph.

Let’s get this auto stuff out of the

way…

Line 3 things up, one behind each

other.

Use the product tent in the studio.

Or go outside and use fill cards.

Shoot in the shade. Use a tripod.

Page 14: Aperture and Shutter Prioritieslgilder.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/0/7/24074936/dec._12_.pdf · Shutter Priority Set your shutter and have your camera on TV. The shutter will remain the

Do not shoot above, instead, be at

the same level as the jewelry so

the back ones go out of focus.

Focus on the front.

This is a depth of field test.

Set your camera at F 5.6, lens

length 55 mm place the upper dial

to AV. Use a tripod and take the

shot.

Next, set your aperture to F-11,

same lens lenght. Dial to the AV

setting. Stay in the same spot.

Look at both photos. What do you

notice?

Same spot, same exercise, change

your lens length to 18 mm.

Sure you’ll get the kitchen sink in

the shot, don’t worry about that.

Set your camera to F 5.6, again AV

setting up top. Take the shot.

Compare that to the first F 5.6

with the 55 mm.

Note the difference.

Now dial up to F 11. Again, AV up

top. Take the shot. Compare that

to the other F 11 taken with the 55

mm lens length.

Go back to 55 mm, F 5.6, AV but

take 1 step back. Again, if you get

the kitchen sink, no worries. We

are looking at depth of field for

those 3 items.

Compare this with the very first

results when you were in closet.

What do you notice?

Go back to 55 mm, now to F 11, AV,

and again, 1 step back. No worries

on the kitchen sink appearing –

look at the depth of those 3 items.

Compare that to the very first

results for F 11.

Shoot full length.

Do the same thing over again, but

now shorten your lens to 18 mm.

What do you notice?

At 18 mm, photograph the 2

people. Have your aperture at F5.6

– hold up the signs but this time

have F5.6 and 18 mm written on

both.

Now do F 11. Hold up the signs,

cross out F 5.6 and have F 11, 18

mm written on both.

Do the same thing again, but step

back, way back and bring your lens

length to 55 mm.

Have both signs say 55 mm, full

length, F 5.6

Take another shot, 55 mm, full

length, F 11

Shutter Priority

Set your shutter and have your

camera on TV.

The shutter will remain the same

no matter the lighting. Your ISO

and your aperture will change as

the lighting changes.

This is what a wedding

photographer or fashion show

photographer would use all the

time.

Try it so that you know it.

What to hand in?

F 5.6 jewelry, 55 mm.

F 11 jewelry, 55 mm.

F 5.6 jewelry, 18 mm.

F 5.6 jewelry, 55 mm step back.

Worksheet.

2 good jewelry shots, one minimal depth of field, focus on the front, the

other, all in focus. Think of elements of design.
