Sweetheart Cake

walk, and live music

provided by Venturosa

& Friends Band. Eld-

ers also enjoyed craft-

ing with the Mescalero

Youth Council. We

had fun celebrating

the Chinese New Year,

making crafts and

learning about The

Chinese Year of The

Dog with a wonderful

service dog demon-

stration. We mixed

all of this in with a

Mardi gras party com-

plete with a Kings

Cake and a Sweet-

heart Cake Walk.

Everyone enjoyed our

no sew fleece project,

where everyone was

able to make a hat

and scarf for them-

selves. It was a use-

ful, fun and easy pro-

ject for all.

We traveled to Old

Mesilla for a day field

trip where we had a

great time looking

around at the historic

area, learning about

the tall tales of the

area at the Gadsden

Museum. Our hosts

Mary and Keith Bird,

shared stories galore

about the history of

the area. Everyone

enjoyed looking at her

collection, especially

the old Victrola re-

cording player. Here

is a picture of us at

the Billy the Kid Jail.

The month continued

with our regular ac-

tivities such as Nutri-

tion Education, Fit-

ness, Bingo, Movie

Day, and Casino Day.

March is going to be

just as much fun! We

will begin with the

second Piñata Making

Class, followed by Na-

tive American Legal

Aid, I-Can Nutrition

Education, and Fit-

ness. We will be tak-

ing a field trip to visit

the pistachio farms in

the area.

Carrizo Boys & Girls Club Recent News

Over the course of

the last few months,

the Club staff has

been working dili-

gently to raise funds

for a Valentine's Ball.

The event was a huge

Success. The kids

danced the night

away. We would like

to send a huge

THANK YOU to The

Inn of the Mountain

Gods and the Mesca-

lero Tribal Store for

their generous dona-

tions to help make

this night possible.

We have been very

busy here at the Car-

rizo Boys & Girls Club.

We have seen an in-

crease in club atten-

dance and are excited

to see so many smiling

faces every day. We

are very fortunate to

have Mr. Joe Blazer

from Four Direction’s

in attendance twice a

week to teach our kids

the harms of commer-

cial tobacco. The staff

have also been work-

ing very hard to incor-

porate our Apache

language and culture.

Most recently teaching

our kids a prayer in

our language to say

before we eat supper

here together.

Important

Our hours of operation for the upcom-

ing Spring Breaks will be from 7:30

a.m.-5:30 p.m. All Children must be

The Branch plans to

conduct a big game

aerial survey on March

5–9, 2018, however, is

subject to flight and

weather conditions. All

seven range units and

the White Mountain

wilderness will be

flown. The purpose of

the survey is to ob-

serve a sample of the

reservation deer and

elk population in order

to calculate a reason-

able estimate of the

herd composition and

size. The survey pro-

ject will be in compli-

ance with the Depart-

ment of Interior, Of-

fice of Aircraft Safety

policy. Flight data will

be analyzed and the

final report will be

submitted to the Mes-

calero Apache Tribe.

Mescalero Prevention Program Recent News

Greeting Readers,

2018 is off to a great

and very productive

start! Here at the Mes-

calero Prevention Pro-

gram we have many

updates to announce.

The past few months

we have been busy,

busy, busy. Recently,

we have restarted our

Nde Youth Council. So

many of our activities

are in Collaboration

with them and other

Tribal Programs. In the

following you will read

about the activities

and events we have

enjoyed hosting. We

look forward to plan-

ning more events. But

for now, here is what

we have accomplished

in the recent months:

October

“I Care” Presentation

We Collaborated with

the Tribal Departments

to stage the “I Care”

presentation, to let

our Mescalero Middle

and High school stu-

dents know that we as

a tribe care for them

and are here to sup-

port them. Our depart-

ment is beyond grate-

ful about the partici-

pation from each de-

partment, whether it

was being there or

signing the banners,

which are currently

hanging up inside the

school.

Herb Collection

In October, we took

more than 50 partici-

pants out for Herb Col-

lection. We started the

day of with a light

breakfast at the Com-

plex. Our first stop

was at White Sands Na-

tional Monument,

where Arden Coman-

che and James Kunet-

sis shared a brief his-

tory and purpose of

why we collect certain

plants and their uses.

A big Thank You to

both for being there

and sharing their

knowledge. There, we

collected Indian Tea,

as well as Sage. After

lunch, we headed back

up to Mud Canyon

where the participants

learned how to iden-

tify hot root leaves

and how to dig it. With

some words from Ar-

den and James, we

ended the day. The

Mescalero Tribal To-

bacco Cessation & Pre-

vention Program also

gave out information

on commercial tobacco

prevention to all par-

ticipants. Many of the

participants had no

prior knowledge of

how to gather these

types of Herbs and said

Page 15: Apache Scout - Mescalero...Boys & Girls Club 6 BIA—Mescalero Agency 9 Fire Rescue 12 Prevention Program 14 Head Start 18 Religion 20 Inside this issue: to participate in ac-Apache

they were willing to

join the next trip like

this.

November

Tobacco Education

Class

Another collaboration

with the Mescalero

Tribal Tobacco Cessa-

tion & Prevention Pro-

gram, was a Tobacco

Education class. Some

participants from the

previous Herb Collec-

tion and some new,

learned about the

harmful effects of

commercial tobacco

and the traditional

uses for traditional

tobacco, even mak-

ing their own

batches using some

of the herbs we col-

lected back in Octo-

ber. In addition, they

also learned how to

sew their own

“Grandma Bags.”

Annual Thanksgiving

Community Dinner

In November, we also

collaborated with the

Family Listening Pro-

gram and the Nde

Youth Council to host

our Annual Community

Thanksgiving Dinner.

This was a huge suc-

cess for our programs

and the community as

well. This event was

all geared towards giv-

ing back to our com-

munity. We served

over 400 dinners to the

community at no cost.

The youth took so

much away from this

event, which gave

them fresh ideas on

more that they can do

for their community.

December

NYLA

The beginning of De-

cember, we took 9 of

our Nde Youth Council

members to the Native

Wellness’s Native

Youth Leadership

Academy in San Diego,

CA. This was the first

time for most of the

youth to fly, to travel,

and/or to see the

Ocean. During the

week the youth

learned many things

about having a healthy

body and mind and

also meet many new

youths from other

tribes. It was a fun and

enlightening experi-

ence for the atten-

dees.

Sticker Shock

Our Youth Council par-

ticipated in a public

awareness campaign

called Sticker Shock. In

this campaign, the

youth placed brightly

colored, warning stick-

ers on packages of al-

cohol indicating that it

is illegal for adults

to purchase alcohol

for minors. This

helps bring aware-

ness to underage

drinking and also

limits youth access

to alcohol. In this ac-

tivity, the Youth DID

NOT handle any alco-

hol and had to have

prior parent permis-

sion to participate.

Elder Visit

Our Youth Council

spent the day with the

Elders making Christ-

Apache Scout Page 15 Volume I I I .18, Issue 03

mas wreaths. The kids

enjoyed conversing

with the elders. To-

gether they made

many different

wreaths which were

also gifted to the Eld-

ers. In addition to giv-

ing the elders wreaths,

the kids gave them

cookies they baked,

which were packaged

in boxes that were also

handmade. We appre-

ciate our youth in tak-

ing the time to spend

and think about our

elders.

Christmas Family

Photos

Along with our Youth

Council, we partici-

pated in the Tribes

Christmas Festival at

IMG by doing free Fam-

ily Photos with back-

grounds that were

hand-made. A big

thank you to those

who helped put the

beautiful backgrounds

together including the

Wellness Court. They

came out amazing and

we loved seeing all the

happy smiles.

January

Sewing Class

During the week of

January 22-25, the

Mescalero Prevention

Program hosted a cul-

tural sewing class. Par-

ticipants were taught

how to use a sewing

machine for first tim-

ers, each made 2 pot-

holders and one apron.

Everything was pro-

vided by the program.

We strongly believe

that Tradition is Pre-

vention!

February

Elder Visit

The month of Febru-

ary was a great month

for our Youth Council.

One day the youth

spent the morning with

the Elders at the Eld-

erly Center. The par-

ticipants at the center

made their very own

bone necklaces and

enjoyed visiting with

some of the youth.

They did ask us to

come back and we are

more than excited for

our next visit with

them.

Valentines Gram

The Nde Youth Coun-

cil held a Valentine’s

Candy Gram Fund-

raiser. We delivered

grams to all three

schools in the area, as

well as local busi-

nesses. We exceeded

our projected outcome

and had such a huge

success. A Big thank

you to our Youth coun-

cil members who

worked very hard at

Page 17: Apache Scout - Mescalero...Boys & Girls Club 6 BIA—Mescalero Agency 9 Fire Rescue 12 Prevention Program 14 Head Start 18 Religion 20 Inside this issue: to participate in ac-Apache

assembling all the or-

ders. Please be on the

look out for more

fundraisers which are

being sold to support

their trips and activi-

ties in the community.

Furthermore, the Mes-

calero Prevention Pro-

gram have also been

very active in conduct-

ing several trainings

about Historical

Trauma to a few tribal

departments and pro-

grams. The takeaway

from the trainings has

been very positive and

informative to employ-

ees of the tribe. We

are also very pleased

to have held a meeting

with most of the Law

Enforcement depart-

ments here on the res-

ervation to collaborate

about community

norms that the Tribe

faces.

Our department is also

very happy to an-

nounce the collabora-

tive work with IHS in

getting a Prescription

Drug Drop box. Any un-

used or expired medi-

cation can be taken

and disposed of prop-

erly at IHS, helping to

eliminate the abuse of

Prescription drugs.

Next, on our agenda is

conducting Alcohol

Merchant Education

trainings with the es-

tablishments that sell

alcohol on the reserva-

tion. These training

are vital in eliminating

underage drinking and

over serving patrons.

We are very excited

for the upcoming work

to be done and look

forward to seeing the

positive outcomes

from our efforts.

We apologize for the

late updates, as you

can see we have been

busy. We would like to

take the time to invite

any youth, 12-24 years

of age, to come join

our Nde Youth Council.

We meet every

Wednesday at 5:30pm

at the Empowerment

Complex in Rm. 201. If

transportation is

needed, we offer it to

and from meetings and

events. For more infor-

mation, please feel

free to call our office

at 575-464-4976.

We hope you enjoyed

reading about our ef-

forts and hope to see

you at our next event.

Head Start Recent News

Every winter, we have the op-

portunity to take our Head Start

children to Ski Apache to get

first-hand experience on learn-

ing to ski or snow board. The

staff and instructors there were

very helpful and friendly.

Enrollment Opportu-

nities

Head Start serves chil-

dren who are between

the ages of 3 and 5

years old, and are in-

come eligible. We cur-

rently have a few slots

open at both the Mes-

calero and Carrizo

Site. A staff member

will give you more de-

tails on what docu-

ments are needed

when you stop by ei-

ther site to pick up an

Enrollment packet.

Here are a few pictures of “Movie

with Dad” day. Thank you to our

Parent Committee for making it

possible for a male role model to

accompany a Head Start child to

the movies in Alamogordo, and

for all the “dads” that came out

to volunteer. After the movie,

we all came back up to the Head

Start for lunch.

Religion Mescalero Reformed Church The Discipline of Fasting

In 1978 Richard Foster

wrote one of the clas-

sics in spiritual forma-

tion titled

“Celebration of Disci-

pline.” In it Foster

works through the in-

ward, outward, and

corporate spiritual

disciplines. They in-

clude things like

prayer, service, con-

fession, and wor-

ship. Things we all

would agree are bene-

ficial in the sanctifica-

tion process of be-

coming more and

more like Jesus. How-

ever, there is another

spiritual discipline

that gets far less

tread in our Reformed

circles and that is the

discipline of fast-

ing. What’s interest-

ing for us who pride

ourselves on joining

our actions to the

Word of God is that

fasting is something

that is simply as-

sumed. Jesus says,

“When you fast,” not

“If you fast.” Jesus

assumes that fasting

will be a part of a

faithful believer’s

Christian lifestyle. I

don’t know about you,

but I’ve only fasted

twice in my life, and

both were on spiritual

formation retreats in

Seminary. So needless

to say, I’m not really

living into Jesus’

words of fasting much

either. I like these

lines from Foster; I

think you’ll like them

too. He writes:

Fasting must forever

center on God. It

must be God-initiated

and God-ordained …

More than any other

discipline, fasting re-

veals the things that

control us … Fasting

reminds us that we

are sustained “by

every word that pro-

ceeds from the mouth

of God.” (Matthew

4:4) Food does not

sustain us. In Christ,

“all things hold to-

gether.” (Colossians

1:17) Therefore, in

experiences of fasting

we are not so much

abstaining from food

as we are feasting on

the Word of

God. Fasting is feast-

ing!

The spiritual discipline

of fasting increases

our dependence on

God. It’s not to draw

attention to ourselves,

or to lose a few

pounds, or to increase

our spiritual pi-

ety. Fasting is an in-

dividual discipline

where we refrain from

food and instead,

pray, worship, and

feed our souls on the

Word of God. In an-

ticipation of Holy

Week, I would like to

encourage you to join

me in a 24-hour fast

from food. Obviously,

those of you who have

health restrictions,

please do not do any-

thing - including fast-

ing - that will nega-

tively impact your

health. However, for

those who are able, I

would encourage you

to join in fasting be-

ginning after the eve-

ning meal (some call

it dinner while others

call it supper) on

Wednesday, March

28. The idea would

be to not have break-

fast or lunch on Thurs-

day, March 29 and to-

gether we will

“break” our fast by

gathering around the

Lord’s Table at our

Maundy Thursday ser-

vice. So, a 24 hour

fast, but only missing

two meals. Again, the

idea would be that in

the place of breakfast

and lunch, you would

spend time as a family

or individually in

prayer. Pray through

those names that

weigh heavy on your

heart or for those in-

cluded in prayer dur-

ing our Sunday wor-

ship. Read John 17-

19. Simply spend

some time in silence

reflecting on the aton-

ing sacrifice of Jesus.

I can’t help but think

of a more meaningful

time celebrating Com-

munion together than

by acknowledging on

an empty stomach

that our hope and

help come from the

name of the Lord who

made heaven and

earth. For centuries,

Christians have prac-

ticed the spiritual dis-

cipline of fasting

linked to the spiritual

discipline of prayer to

inch their way closer

to the Lord. In times

of great discernment,

Christians have fasted

to remove any de-

pendence or distrac-

tion away from the

very presence of

God. In this season of

Lent as we approach

the events of Jesus’

passion and eventual

resurrection, chal-

lenge yourself by fast-

ing for 24 hours. And

as you do, pay close

attention to your

sense of the presence

of God. What could

the Lord be trying to

tell you? How do you

feel giving up food for

prayer and devo-

tion? What controls

you?

I hope you are re-

freshed during this

Lenten season. I hope

you are renewed by

the Word of God. I

hope you are re-

charged by the com-

munity of God. I hope

you are restored by

the Spirit of

God. During this

Lenten season I hope

and pray that you en-

gage in worshiping our

God with a humble,

honest, and rejuve-

nated spirit.

Spring is coming and

resurrection season is

upon us; let the

thought and vision of

an empty tomb and an

empty cross revive our

hopes and spirits as

we approach wor-

ship. Join us each and

every Sunday as we

worship God by wak-

ing up our senses to

the sights, sounds,

smells, tastes, and

even feelings of Lent.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Mark
