NOTETAKINGAP HUG – MS. SMITH EDITION

NOTETAKING IS:

• Actively Listening/reading

• Writing key words and concepts

• Using abbreviations

• Making it helpful to study

• As useful as you make it

NOTETAKING IS NOT:

• Writing every word on the screen

• A replacement for reading the textbook

• Something you never look at again

• Writing only what is on the slide

• Something that happens while you are texting at the same time

• Pointless

• Something you do once

NOTES HAVE TO BE HELPFUL FOR YOU!

• I can’t tell you how you should do them.

• My way may not work for you.

• You need to figure out what is best for you.

MY SUGGESTED TOOLS

• Favorite pens/pencils (it’s always more fun to take notes if you really like what you’re writing with.

• Color – color can help you differentiate a variety of things

• Highlighters

• Paper

TIME!!!

• It takes practice

• You may need to re-write them.

• You should look at them many times – not just to study for a test

II. Main topic/idea #2

• Positives

• Neat

• Structure

• Can easily turn into review questions

• Not as positive

• Doesn’t show relationships between main topics

• It may be difficult to create a structure if there isn’t one given to you

EXAMPLES:

WAYS TO TAKE NOTES - CORNELL

• Positives

• You can buy paper already cornell note rulled

• Most taught way

• Not as positive

• Extra time for summary

• Having to draw/fold the lines

EXAMPLES

VISUAL OR MAPPING – YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE AN ARTIST TO DO IT

• Positives:

• Connect the ideas visually

• Great for visual learners

• Can be made more neat

• Not as positive:

• May be difficult if you have no idea of the lecture or reading’s structure

• I call it the Webby Mappy Thingy 0r WMT

VISUAL NOTES

EXAMPLES (EVEN MS. SMITH CAN DO THIS)

THREE TYPES OF NOTES USING BOB MARLEY’S 3 LITTLE BIRDS AS THE LECTURE

MS. SMITH’S LECTURE NOTETAKING EXPERIENCES

• We didn’t have powerpoint or any kind of electronic transmission of notes when I was in HS or College

• We were taught to do outline notes

• When I got to college, I figured out that I needed to spend more time with my notes. So on the same day as the lecture, I rewrote the notes – neater and could rearrange them in a way that makes sense. This gave me the opportunity to review my notes within 24. Because I was rewriting them, I could try different note taking styles until I found one that worked for me consistently.

OTHER READING NOTE STYLES – PAGE SUMMARY

• When you get to the end of the page – stop and summarize what you read – be sure to note the page number

DOUBLE ENTRY COLUMNS

• Main idea/detail

• Quote/ meaning

• Questions I have/answer from text

GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS

Venn • A bunch of different types exist – search online or check out the collection on the website

POST IT NOTES

• Summarize main ideas on post it notes

• When you finish the section/key issue/ chapter transfer to a piece of paper or take a picture with your phone (now you can always be studying AP HuG)
