- The founder of Confucianism was a man named, well Confucius.
- He was around from 551 to 479 B.C.E
3. Where was the region that Confucianism was developed in??
- This region is China
- Time period was from about 6 thcentury to 5 thcentury B.C.E
4. A Holy Book Or not??
- No, there was no Holy Book. At least not one book. However, several books which were composed of the
- Five Classics

5. Polytheistic or Monotheistic??
- Confucianism is not a main religion
- Therefore Confucianism is neither Polytheistic nor Monotheistic
6. Tenants of Confucianism
- TheConfucian Canonachieved its present form in the Sung Dynasty under the direction of Chu Hsi (1130-1200).
- It consists of theFive Classicsand theFour Books .
- Shu Ching(Classic of History) and
- Lun Yu(Analects) of Confucius arethe examples.
7. Impact of Confucianism
- Reshaped social relationships and hierarchy
- Educated young men for government positions
- Taught man that he can do it all by himself if he only follows the way of the ancients

- cruel, no mercy, expressed harshness
- mass executions of prisoners
- Villages captured: women, children, and aged could be beheaded
- mass slaughters of thousands: thrown into boiling cauldronsrelatives forced to drink the human soup

- There have been no clearly defined splits in the religion.
- However, different interpretations of Confuciuss teachings have been developed.
- Ultimate division: regards inborn goodness of mankind
- Two main branches were formed:

- Mencius: human intention is inherently good, and that all men are born good, although they may become wicked.
- Xunzi (Hsun-tzu): people are born inherently with evil natures and desires, and require cultivation through ritual.
- Despite the development of different outlooks on the initial good will of man, all views eventually recognize the importance of human education and cultivation.

- Korean Confucianism
- Neo-Confucianism

- The Emperor Han Wudi spread Confucianism when he expanded his empire to northern Vietnam and Korea.
- Italian missonary Matteo Ricci introduced Confucianism to Europe when he studied it as a strategy to introduce Christianity to China
