AP CHOPPED CHAMPIONSHIP

AP Seminar students enjoyed the 2nd Annual Chopped Championship on Monday. Students received 3 mystery ingredients to incorporate into one glorious culinary masterpiece. But what does this have to do with English, you might be asking? Mystery ingredients are like sources used in academic writing. Just as a good cook incorporates interesting ingredients into a creative dish, so does a good writer who synthesizes interesting sources into a lucid argument. Special thank yous go to Mr. Beausoleil and Dr. Levan (Ms. Levan’s mom) for being this year’s guest judges!

BOARD GAME NIGHT The final board game night of the year took place this past Monday. Our gourp of Lockerby students played Rummikub, Munchkin, Ticket to Ride, Village and One Night Ultimate Werewolf. The Munchkin game (seen below) was the most intense game of the night! Board game nights have been organized by Mrs. Plourde who is retiring at the end of the school year. The Board Games club would like to thank her for everything that she has done to bring students together over her years with us at Lockerby. We will miss you dearly!

LIGHT MY FIRE!

Lockerby Composite construction students have been busy with another community building project. Our school has teamed-up with our partners at the Sudbury Fire Services again this year, to produce model homes that are used to train firefighters in how to respond to a house fire. Students built nine houses in total, and on Monday we will be treated to a full day of activities at the Firefighter training Centre in Azilda. Please stay tuned to the school newsletter next week for pictures and a full report of our adventure!

VICE-PRINCIPAL GREEN It was announced this past week that Mr. Green has been appointed as Rainbow District School Board’s newest Vice-Principal. Starting in the fall, Mr. Green will become the newest Sudbury Secondary Northstar. Mr. Green has taught at Lockerby Composite School since the 1998-1999 school year. Mr. Green leaves an enourmous hole to fill at Lockerby Composite School, but we all know that the Viking community will join in thanking him for all that he has done for our school and in wishing him well next year!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: CHAD Last week, Sudbury suffered the loss of community leader Jeremy Mahood. Chad, our very own Lockerby student, decided to build a cedar bench for All Nations Church, and dedicate his efforts to the memory of Mr. Mahood. This initiative became a culminating activity in Chad’s construction class. He first designed the bench using a computer program called Fusion. He then created a model of the bench on the 3D printer, before starting to work in the construction shop. Along the way, Chad encountered the inevitable challenges of design…the points at which a designer must adapt to constraints such as the characteristics of the materials or the principles of ergonomics. Chad had to modify his plan several times, and even resorted to freehand sketches in an effort to resolve conflicts. The final product was a superb reflection of his design process, and a best-in-class result for woodworking at Lockerby this year. Chad’s project personifies the STEP philosophy at Lockerby Composite. We encourage every student to engage in design-build projects that resonate with them on a personal level, and make a contribution to the wider community!

2018 – 2019 SCHOOL YEAR CELEBRATION! Lockerby Composite’s Student Council celebrated their very own staff and students with cake this past Wednesday. They also recognized our three retirees: Mr. Luoma, Ms. McCulligh and Ms. Plourde.

CANCER DRIVE 2019: OCTOBER 24TH, 2019 Last week, Lockerby’s Kids Caring for Kids Cancer Drive Committee visited the Health Sciences North Research Institute and the Northern Cancer Foundation Pediatric Unit. After touring both sites, the committee was able to see the positive contributions Lockerby’s Cancer Crive has made in the lives of children and families battling cancer within Northern Ontario. The visit has motivated and inspired them to make the 24th Annual Kids Caring for Kids Cancer Drive in October 2019 another huge success! Cancer Drive would is made possible because of the generous support and donations from within our Sudbury committee. Every dollar raised here, stays here. All donations are used for local children and families battling cancer. This year, we have online payment systems available. To donate online, visit: https://lockerby.rainbowschools.ca/school-profile/cancer-drive/ Select the option to donate to ‘Lockerby Cancer Drive’ by selecting ‘Donate Now.’ Please note, if you wish to donate monthly, check the button that reads ‘make this donation monthly.’ Don't forget to also follow us on Snapchat and Instagram: lcscancerdrive

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: GABRIEL

A holeyboard is a tiered structure used by musicians to support foot operated pedals and tuning devices. Gabriel chose to build one for his final project in Construction Technology. Firstly, he did some research about the structure of a holeyboard, and considered the needs of the musicians he knows. He settled on baltic birch plywood for his material, due to the fact that it is dimensionally stable and looks good with a clear finish. In order to get a perfect hole pattern, Gabriel made drilling templates from masonite. This will also make it easier for him to reproduce his product if he decides to mass produce it later on. For every design student at Lockerby, the best experience we can hope for is when they successfully complete a project, demonstrate excellent results, and take immense pride in their work. This inspires all of us to stretch to new heights of creativity in the future. Well done Gabe! REVIT UP!

One of the programs available to students in the architecture course is called Autodesk Revit. It is a state-of-the-art software package that functions as a CAD program but also as a rendering program. As architects and engineers move toward fully adopting Building Information Management (BIM) software as their preferred design application, Lockerby students are keeping-up with the pace. Here are Nathan’s before and after renderings of a local house he found on a realtor site and decided to ‘purchase’ to renovate for his Flipping Sudbury project.
