It is not unusual for us tohear complaints about eye-strain, eye fatigue, blurred vi-sion, dry or red eyes, and evenheadaches. There is often astrong correlation betweenthese symptoms and theamount of time spent on com-puters, tablets or smart phones.

Our visual system isn’tdesigned to stare at screens for Dr. Ryan Robison

prolonged hours. With thechanges in technology our eyesare being used in new and de-manding ways. This can causeany of the symptoms describedabove.

The condition is calledComputer Vision Syndrome(digital eyestrain) and refers tothe discomfort associated withprolonged digital device use. These devices include televi-sions, computers, smart

phones, e-readers, and tablets. So what can we do to

keep our eyes healthy while

using digital devices? First, youneed the proper prescription. If you don’t, this can causeheadaches and eyestrain thatcould have been more easilyavoided. Many patients findcomfort with computer glassesthat provide a wider focus forboth computer screen andreading distances.

Second, reduce glare

from excessive lighting. Over-head lighting or sunlight maybe causing reflections on yourmonitor. You can adjust thebrightness, contrast or size ofyour font to reduce strain. Many patients report improvedcomfort on e-readers by adjust-ing text size.

Third, blink! Studiesshow that when we read orwatch TV we b l ink lesswhich causes tear evapora-tion and dryness. Sometimestreatments or medicationsmay be needed , such asLipiFlow, punctual plugs, fishoils, prescription eye drops orartificial tears.

Finally, take breaks! When we stare at screens oureyes will strain. The musclein our eye that accommodatescan easily get overworkedand needs to relax periodi-cally. This can be done withthe 20/20 rule. For every 20minutes of near activity takea 20 second break and blinkseveral times.

Studies also show that

prolonged exposure to LEDscreens can damage retinalcells and increase risk formacular degeneration. Luck-ily, there are lenses that blockthis damaging light.

With the ease technol-ogy offers, we must take pre-cautions to avoid the damag-ing effects to our eyes. Toschedule an appointment withone of our doctors call 435-673-5577 or visit our websiteat SouthWestVision.com.

If you were to pass awaytoday, would you have regrets?Vacations that were never taken, words that were left unspoken,or tasks that were left undone?Bronnie Ware is the author ofthe critically acclaimed book,The Top Five Regrets of theDying: A Life Transformed bythe Dearly Departing. For eightyears, Ms. Ware worked on andoff in palliative care and sat atthe bedside of the dying. Shenotes that common themes be-gan to surface when her patientswere questioned about theirlives. Ms. Ware began to takenotes and identified their top fiveregrets.

1. I wish I’d had the cour-age to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected ofme.

Ms. Ware states, “This

Bedside Regretswas the most common regret ofall. When people realize thattheir life is almost over and look

back clearly on it, it is easy tosee how many dreams havegone unfulfilled.”

2. I wish I hadn’t workedso hard.

Ms. Ware continues, “Thiscame from every male patientthat I nursed. They missed theirchildren’s youth and theirpartner’s companionship…All

of the men I nursed deeply re-gretted spending so much oftheir lives on the treadmill of awork existence.”

3. I wish I’d had the cour-age to express my feelings.

“Many people suppressedtheir feelings in order to keeppeace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre ex-istence and never became whothey were truly capable of be-coming.”

4. I wish I had stayed intouch with my friends.

“Many had become socaught up in their own lives thatthey had let golden friendshipsslip by over the years. Therewere many deep regrets aboutnot giving friendships the timeand effort that they deserved.Everyone misses their friendswhen they are dying.”

5. I wish that I had letmyself be happier.

“This is a surprisinglycommon one. Many did not re-alize until the end that happinessis a choice.”

Living life to the fullest and

regret free is a concept we canall get behind. As Ms. Ware pro-foundly states on her blog, “Lifeis a choice. It is YOUR life.Choose consciously, choosewisely, choose honestly. Choosehappiness.”

Tinnitus or “ringing in theears” is defined as a perceptionof noise or ringing in the ears orcould be also characterized by“whistling, hissing, chirping”sound in the ears. Tinnitus is acommon problem and affectsabout 15 to 20 percent of peopletoday. Tinnitus isn’t a condi-tion itself – it’s a symptom ofan underlying condition, such asage-related hearing loss, ear in-jury or trauma, exposure to loudnoise, medications, Meniere’sdisease, circulatory problem orother influences.

Many times, tinnitus goesaway on its own regardless ofthe cause. However, thatdoesn’t mean you should waitweeks, months or years for tin-

nitus to disappear. This is espe-cially important if your tinnitusgrows louder over time, as thismay indicate that you suffer

from progressive hearing loss.Tinnitus can be distressful,

negatively impacting quality oflife as many sufferers report as-sociated symptoms of insomnia, anxiety and depression. Tinni-

tus is not a serious health prob-lem but rather a nuisance thatmay go away. However, somepeople with tinnitus may requiremedical or surgical treatment.Presently there is no cure or ap-proved medication for tinnitusbut there are some prescribedmedications that can help. Yourprimary provider, audiologist oran ENT (Ear, Nose and Throatspecialist) or Otolaryngologistwill help design a treatment regi-men to help with this condition.

Chrysalis Clinical Re-search and Southern Utah Ear,Nose and Throat Specialists areparticipating in a clinical trial fora possible new treatment for tin-nitus. Trial consists of evaluat-ing medication that is given asan injection in the ear as a onetime dose. You must be 18 to75 years and experiencing symp-toms of tinnitus in one ear for

no longer than 6 months. Thereis no charge to you for medica-tion and any procedures beingperformed for trial and if youqualify compensation is provided

Hold-ing hands, they walked back totheir old school. It was notlocked, so they entered, andfound the old desk they’dshared, where Andy had carved‘I love you, Sally.’

On their way back home,a bag of money fell out of anarmored car, practically landingat their feet. Sally quickly pickedit up and, not sure what to dowith it, they took it home. There, she counted the money-fiftythousand dollars!

“We’ve got to give itback.” Andy said.

The next day, two policeofficers were canvassing theneighborhood looking for themoney, and knocked on theirdoor.

“Pardon me, did either ofyou find a bag that fell out of anarmored car yesterday?”

“No,” said Sally,“She’s lying,” said Andy,

been their Priest there. He hadbeen born in Ireland and hadcome to America after his ordi-nation June 28, 1868.

When the Silver Reefboomed Father Scanlan had be-come the missionary rector overthe Salt Lake parish and SilverReef came under his direction.

In1878 he visited SilverReef to install Father DennisKelly as the local priest, he alsobegan a campaign to raise fundsfor a new church, and within

four months an attractive framebuilding had been built and dedi-cated. The first services were

held on Easter Sunday with achoir singing the “Missa Can-

tata”.But while this new

church was under construction,

a high mass for all southern UtahCatholics was in the plans. TheMormon authorities were awareof this, and Apostle ErastusSnow and Stake PresidentJ.D.T. McAllister of the Churchof Jesus Christ of Latter-daySaints offered to have the masscelebrated in the Tabernacle indowntown St. George.

Father Scanlan wasworried about such a combina-tion – Catholics and Mormonsmixing in such conditions? Howwould they both react? Wherewould the Catholics get a choirto fill such a large building? Af-ter all, the music must be sungin Latin!

John M. McFarlane, conductor of the “St. GeorgeMormon Choir” could sing themass if they had the music intime. But the mass was just afew weeks away and Father

Scanlan finally agreed and sendcopies for “Peter’s Mass” tothe choir. By the date the masswas planned, the choir hadmastered the music to the“Kyrie Eleison, Gloria, andCredo.”

The St. George Taber-nacle was filled to overflowingwith Catholics and Mormons. The latter impressed with themanner that Father Scanlan cel-ebrated the mass. He won theesteem and good will of thecrowd by explaining the mean-ing of the vestments used andpreaching a sermon under thetitle: “True adorers od Godshall adore Him in spirit andtruth.”

He began his remarksby saying: “I think you arewrong, and you think I amwrong, but this should not keepus from treating each otherwith due consideration and re-spect.”

The impact of this his-toric event at the St. GeorgeTabernacle set the stage forwide use by many churchesand civic groups of this historicbuilding for the benefit of allin Washington County. Itstands today in a new refur-bished building, presentingmusic of all genres and styles– and religions.

“You heard about us on your radio!”

Every year at this time Iget asked for this popcorn ballrecipe…I guess because it is soeasy and the flavors are won-derful. We love to make spe-cial treats for family membersand the special friends in ourlives.

Popcorn is considered“gold” by researchers and ar-chaeologists. Hard to believethat popcorn goes back over5,000 years and in 1948 whenarchaeologists found kernels ina dig in New Mexico knownonly as “Bat Cave”, they dem-onstrated by dropping a fewkernels into hot fat that itpopped! Amazing. No won-der it is called gold. And howexciting it is to know that in

southwest Utah, a millenniumold popped kernel of popcornwas found in a dry cave inhab-ited by predecessors of thePueblo Indian? Well, it wasn’tuntil the 1880’s that a com-

pany called The AlbertDickinson Company firststarted commercially sellingpopcorn calling it Big and LittleBuster, presumably for the sizeof the popcorn produced. Then around 1914, C. H.Smith founded the AmericanPop Corn Company in SiouxCity, Iowa and launchedAmerica’s first brand namepopcorn, Jolly Time. His slo-gan was “guaranteed to pop”

and even during the DepressionEra, popcorn remained one ofthe few luxuries affordable byeven the most down and outfamilies. I don’t know of any-one who dislikes popcorn orthe wonderful goodies you cancome up with using this awe-some product.

When I was growing up,the folks in our neighborhoodwould put on a movie nightwith a treat booth to makemoney for different families orthose in need. I can remem-ber watching that familyfriendly movie on that bigscreen in a gym of one of thelocal churches and purchasingmy favorite treats to eat dur-ing the movie. The treat Ilooked forward to buying wasa popcorn ball. It didn’t mat-ter if it was caramel, cinnamonor just plain syrup rolled upinto that delicious, longawaited popcorn ball.

When my children were

growing up they enjoyed help-ing me make popcorn balls allthroughout the year, using dif-ferent Jell-O flavors to changethem up a little. Easter it waslemon flavored Jell-O; 4th ofJuly, it was raspberry or grape;Halloween was orange;Thanksgiving was peach andChristmas was strawberry andline. Whichever flavor you use,I am sure you will be the hit ofthe neighborhood when all the

trick-or-treaters visit yourhome.

Popcorn Gelatin Balls1-3 oz. package Jell-O,

any flavor (not sugar free)1 cup sugar1 cup white corn syrup6 quarts popped cornMix first three ingredients

together and bring to a boil.Cook just until sugar is dis-solved. Pour over poppedcorn and shape into balls.

Principles Of Freedom

By Lynn West

The political world isabuzz with talk of Impeach-ment for President DonaldTrump. I am not going to getinto a lot of discussion hereabout whether he should orshould not be impeached. I willexamine the process, how itworks and the likely outcomeof pursuing this avenue.

The first thing that mostpeople do not realize is that im-peaching any appointed orelected government personnel(including the President) is nota removal from office. It issimply beginning a process thatcould possibly end in that re-sult. It is similar to a GrandJury in a criminal case wherea group of people (in this case, the US House of Representa-tives) consider evidence anddecide whether a person shouldbe brought to trial by issuing a“Resolution of Impeachment”.If that happens, the processthen moves to the US Senatewhere the membership decideswhether or not to proceed witha trial. If they do so, they alsoact as the prosecutors, defend-ers and jury and decidewhether the President is guiltyand whether that guilt rises tothe level that removal from of-fice is needed. They can alsoopt to not try the President (orother government officials) orto issue a reprimand or otherpenalty instead of removalfrom office if they feel thoseare the appropriate actions.

The US Constitution out-

Impeachment? lines that a president can be im-peached and tried for and ofthe following concerns – Trea-son, Bribery or other highCrimes and Misdemeanors. Itdoes not specify what thosehigh Crimes and Misdemean-ors might be (which would bedecided by the Senate) but themodifier “high” indicates thatthey would have to be ex-tremely serious to be consid-ered worthy of removal fromoffice. In other words, gettinga traffic ticket or smokingmarijuana might be consideredmisdemeanors and bad judge-ment, but would likely not re-sult in a trial by the Senate.

It is important to note thatonly two presidents, BillClinton in 1999 and AndrewJohnson in 1868, have beenimpeached and neither was re-moved from office. RichardNixon resigned from office be-fore the House could take avote on impeachment, thus re-moving the reason for, and thedivisiveness to the country of,the trial. This is partly because, even though the House needsa simple majority to impeach(request a trial by the Senate),the Senate can only convictupon a 2/3 majority and thenstill has to decide appropriatepunishment.

Impeachment is not acriminal trial and does not havethe same standards. It is a po-litical process with a lot of pos-turing and name-calling as wellas inuendo and assumptions. Itis typically very divisive to thenation and often has unin-tended consequences. For ex-ample, when the Republicansimpeached President Clinton,

they lost seats in Congress inthe next election. There is of-ten a backlash as people seeall the grandstanding and pos-turing and feel that it is moreof a witch hunt than a decentand reasonable effort to cor-rect a wrong.

In this particular situation, the following things are likely. The Democrats in the House ofRepresentatives will try to getan Impeachment resolution andsend it to the Senate. Thechances are about 50/50 of thathappening, but some of them seethis as a way to discredit andtaint President Trump and theRepublicans so they want to pro-ceed. If they do, the Senate willlikely refuse to go to trial for tworeasons. The first is that, eventhough Trump is obnoxious inhis communications style, littleif anything rises to the level of acrime according to most legal ex-perts. The second is that it isunlikely that the Republicanmajority in the Senate wouldactually choose removal fromoffice. It would take all theDemocrats (and not all are onboard about impeachment) aswell as around 20 Republicansto vote for removal. Finally, theDemocrats run a serious risk ofbacklash such as the Republi-cans suffered after the Clintonsituation. If not very careful, they could come off as mean-spirited and partisan, putting get-ting rid of Trump ahead of theirduties and the good of the coun-try. This could occur whetheror not they were successful inremoving him from office whichwould make Mike Pence Presi-dent.

If they did that, they wouldlikely face a far more likeablecandidate for the next presiden-tial election (Mike Pence) as wellas likely suffering a backlash for

their actions and attitudes. Forthat reason, I don’t think we willactually see Trump removedfrom office unless other, moreserious charges come to light.

The Genealogical Societyof Utah (GSU) was organizedon November 13, 1894, in theChurch of Jesus Christ of Lat-ter-day Saints’ historian office. In 1918, F.J. Wilder, a Bostonbookseller, predicted that theSociety would become the larg-est and the strongest in the worldand that people from all parts ofthe world would come and spenddays and weeks studying there.

Some of the Society’s or-ganizational purposes in 1894 asstated in a FamilySearch Wikiarticle were:

· “Benevolent in collect-ing, compiling, establishing, andmaintaining a genealogical libraryfor the use and benefit of itsmembers and others.”

· “Educational in dis-seminating information regardinggenealogical matters.”

· “Membership in the So-ciety was open to anyone ofgood moral character.”

GSU was first housed inthe upstairs room of theHistorian’s Office. The library’sfirst collection was 300 books.Books were hard to come by,and money was short, but by sixyears the Society had increasedtheir book collection to 450books and in seven years to 800books. The entrance fee to be-come a member of the Genea-logical Society was $2.00, withan annual fee of $1.00. A life-time membership was $12.00.Within ten years, the lifetime

membership was 173 members.GSU warned that it was

cheaper to use professionalpeople to do genealogy researchthan to do it by themselves. They also warned that therewere irresponsible people whodid sloppy or dishonest workand to use only researchers ap-proved by the Society.

In 1917, the Societymoved into the new Church Of-fice building, given the entirefourth floor, and by 1936 theyhad outgrown the Church Of-fice Building, so they movedinto the first three floors of theJoseph F. Smith MemorialBuilding. In 1985, the Genea-logical Society moved into itscurrent location. In addition tocollecting records, the Genea-logical Society also microfilmedrecords from around the world, and in 1963 they started hous-ing the microfilm in the GraniteMountain Records Vault. In1975, the GSU became the Ge-nealogical Department of theChurch of Jesus Christ of Lat-ter-day Saints.

FamilySearch waslaunched in May of 1999 with theintent of creating one single fam-ily tree and replaced the GSU andthe Genealogical Department. The history of GSU is also thehistory of FamilySearch. More in-formation is found in the bookHearts Turned to the Fathers: AHistory of the Genealogical So-ciety of Utah, 1894-1994.
