On the threshold of a new Conference
church year together, I want to thank you
for being a wonderful church family!
I count it a privilege to be your pastor and
find it hard to believe we are beginning a fourth year of ministry together. May
God continue to lead and inspire us to make followers of Jesus Christ through
PRAISING GOD; GROWING SPIRITUALLY; and, REACHING NEIGHBORS near and
far.
May we always joyfully and faithfully remember our calling through Christ:
In the words of a hymn: "I am the church. You are the church. We are the
church together. All who follow Jesus, all around the world; yes, we're the
church together."
Being the church of Christ is an incredible blessing and a huge responsibility!
We are called to be just that. Yet, we cannot do this on our own strength and
design. We require the guidance of God and the strength of Jesus Christ.
"I can do all things THROUGH CHRIST who strengthens me!" May we call out
for and rely upon this strength of Christ as a corner of Jesus' universal church,
known as Francis Asbury UMC!
Speaking of being the church, at a recent church council meeting, we were
invited to share responses to the question, "IF FRANCIS ASBURY UMC no longer
existed what would be missed?" Here were some of the responses:
• Inspiring worship
• The music ministry
• Welcome Table
• Local school partnership and ministry
• First Farm Women's outreach
• Room in the Inn
• Vespers at Pisgah Villa
• Faith Community Nurse and Health Ministries
• A beautiful and functional facility gratefully used by many in our
community including: Red Cross Blood Drive; Dance Club; bi-annual
community yard sale; Weight Watchers; recreational programs.
• Children and Family Ministries under Megan's leadership
• Our church staff
• Our church family who evidence a kindness and gentleness in Jesus' name
• Francis Prayer Bear and Prayer Shawl Ministries
• Regular support of ABCCM and other outreach ministries
There is much more for which to celebrate and give thanks, but let us not
forget that we are the church of Christ Jesus with great opportunities to
shine Jesus' light in a dark and needy world! Thank you FAUMC for being a
wonderful church! A fellow servant in Christ, Pastor Michael
A Little Advice from Nurse Dora….
THE HEALING POWER OF HUMAN TOUCH
Although often taken for granted, human touch has been found to be vital to our health, happiness and healing. Scientific studies have proven that touching
someone in a caring, nurturing way has the capacity to help one decrease stress and anxiety, strengthen the immune system and lower blood pressure. Beyond these positive effects on the body, human touch also creates the ability to restore our minds and bodies with our spiritual connection. When we physically touch someone in a kind loving way we are communicating our feelings of love and acceptance at a level that is far deeper than words. Gently rubbing someone's back, giving a hug, holding someone's hand, and even a pat on the back can go a long way in nourishing that person's soul, as well as your own; for when you touch another person in a kind way, you are blessed in return. Touch transmits love, and love has the power to heal.
Hugs are a great way of offering hope and reassurance It's a way of connecting without saying a word. Physical touch can communicate, “I feel your pain. I see you. I understand what you're going through.”
We all have a built-in need to be touched. When it is done respectfully and appropriately, touch is a vital part of the human experience. A pat on the back, a rub on the shoulder, a handshake, a touch on the arm – all stimulate the reward centers in the brain. We feel happier, safer, more confident, more soothed and more connected.
Most of us crave love and acceptance. What better way to communicate that than by reaching out and touching someone?
Hugs! Dora Brown, RN, FAUMC Faith Community Nurse Blood Pressure checks & Diabetes Screenings on August 7th & 28th
from 10:30-1pm at the Welcome Table.
Loving Our Neighbors: Stories of church members reaching out to neighbors near and far with the love of Christ.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
FAUMC members Dick and Carol Branting love to meet new people and answer questions about living in the Pisgah Valley Retirement Community.
They write about their experiences:
“It is hard for people to visualize where their furniture will fit when they see an empty unit so we told marketing that they could show our home to prospective residents if they would like to see an occupied unit. Since that time (3 years) we have shown our home to over 150 people. We have met people from many different states and backgrounds. Several of these people have since moved to our community and we now count them as friends.”
“When folks tour our home they almost always comment on the baskets of yarn in every room. Carol enjoys knitting and is part of the Prayer Shawl Ministry at Francis Asbury UMC. The shawls and lap robes are made with love and prayers for the person who will receive one. They are a blessing to the one who makes them as well as to the recipient.”
Dick and Carol also enjoy singing in our FAUMC choir, leading us in worship through beautiful music.
We are grateful for the many ways Dick and Carol share God’s love by using their gifts of hospitality, knitting, compassion, intercession and music with our congregation and the Enka/Candler Community.

The Progressive Education Program serves
approximately 150
students in 22
classrooms in age
a p p r o p r i a t e
settings at Estes Elementary, Valley Springs
Middle School and TC Roberson High School.
PEP students who live anywhere in
Buncombe County and have moderate to
severe physical and intellectual disabilities
are served at PEP. The PEP program
provides individualized classroom instruction
by skilled special education teachers and
instructional assistants, related services
staff, adapted physical education and job
coaches. PEP provides a nurturing and safe
learning environment which promotes a
positive learning experience and fosters
self-esteem in our students. We value our
students as individuals with unique
physical, social, emotional, and intellectual
needs who are treated with dignity and
respect. Because many of our students live
in group homes or settings, we have a very
small PTO that works hard with what they
can do but are very limited in resources.
Because of the unique learning needs of our
students, which include not only academics
but all aspects of personal care, our school
supply list looks very different from other
schools. The PEP staff is very grateful for all
your support. Though I am officially retired
from full time teaching, I am forever a
member of the PEP Family. I will be glad to
answer any questions.
Blessings and thanks!
Pam Moser
