“We are never more fully alive, more completely ourselves, or more deeply engrossed in
anything than when we are playing.” -Charles Schaefer
Play is an important part of the learning process. It is a tool that develops children’s physical,
emotional and cognitive strength, along with imagination. Through play, children are able to
create and explore the magnificent world around them and enhance their confidence and equip
themselves with the skills that they will require to face the future. There are different types of
play that children are involved in daily and each one helps children understand their own area of
interest which eventually leads them towards understanding where their heart lies. We
understand the importance of this simple yet valuable way of learning and ensure that a right
balance is always maintained at school.
Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration
Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival that is celebrated by Hindus all over India. In order to make our
learners aware of this festival we conducted a small skit during assembly wherein the learners
narrated the story in a fun way. Later in the day they were given “modaks” (traditional sweets
served during this festival). They also got an opportunity to try their hand at the “dhol” (a large
drum) that is played during this festival!
Independence Day Celebration
India is a country steeped in history; everywhere you look and every book that you read about
this wonderful country will give you a glimpse of innumerable people who made it what it is
today! In order to celebrate this rich heritage that we are a part of, we gave out learners an
opportunity to understand and absorb the spirit of India during the Independence Day
celebrations. It was amazing to see that children were able to answer many questions that we
put to them during the assembly. Truly global citizens that is what our learners proved they are!
World Book Lovers Day
Instilling in children the love of books is a gift that they will cherish throughout their lives! In
order to do this, we organized a book fair on the school premises. They were also introduced to
the importance of caring for books through an activity called visiting the “Book Hospital.” The
book worm, our very own Ms. Deepali took them on the tour! The highlight of the day was when
the Clifford mascot visited them in their classrooms. Our learners had fun pulling his tail, hearing
him bark and asking him questions.
Raksha Bandhan Celebration
Raksha bandhan which literally translates into “the bond of protection” is an event celebrated
annually wherein the sister ties a thread on her brother’s wrist. In order to give our learners a
glimpse of this practice we told them the significance of the thread (rakhi) and gave them an
opportunity to make their own rakhis using chart paper, sequins and ribbons. The children also
understood the importance of the tika which is applied using vermillion and rice.
Friendship Day Celebration
Since friendship day this year was based on the Hawaiin theme it was amazing to see each
child walking through the gate dressed in their colorful Hawaiin costume. Apart from the event
for children where we highlighted the fact that plants are also our friends and that all of us are
responsible to ensure their safety and well-being, we also planned a few activities for the
parents. Children exchanged friendship bands, heard stories on friendship and posed for lovely
photographs. It was a lovely day based on the amazing bond called friendship!
Parsi New Year
Our little ones got a glimpse of Parsi culture when we celebrated Parsi New year at school.
Children were told the story of how and why the Parsi community came to India and how they
celebrate the New Year with family and friends. Vidaal’s mum, who so willingly came to spend
time with our learners also highlighted the importance of their belief – “Good thoughts, good
words and good deeds.” Thank you Ms. Bhathena.
Visit to the University of Jyvaskyla
In August, 9 of us leaders from Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad visited the University of
Jyvaskyla to learn more about the Finnish education system. The week long program gave us
an in-depth understanding of the policies, their Education system and their values and vision.
During this time we also got an opportunity to interact with experts in the field and visit schools
so that we could see the set-up and interact with the learners. It was a great learning experience
and we look forward to sharing and implementing the best practices soon!
Professional Development
Teachers are great learners and are always looking for opportunities to hone their skills further.
This month the wonderful team shared their learning and areas of expertise with their
colleagues. The whole school was filled with laughter and interaction as they put themselves in
the learners shoes to understand how they play and use this skill to learn! Professional
development at our centre in an ongoing process and every month we ensure that we have a
host of new topics lined up for the wonderful team.
Thank you for all your love and support. I look forward to sharing more news with you in my next
newsletter.
Warm Regards,
Rachna
