Highlights Of Items In This Issue:

“TransFormative Connections to God, each other, and the world”

Are You Getting Your Naps?

Parents will tell you there’s no doubt about it: kids need

their naps.

Being a little kid is hard work! Making muscle and building

bone takes a LOT of energy! And hungry little brains are

desperately trying to make connections, figure out what’s

what and how to get what you need and say what you mean.

So little kids deserve a break and they need a break.

They’ve earned it! Plus, it makes their own lives more enjoy-

able, and truth be told, it makes the lives of everyone

around them more enjoyable too! And yet… they resist.

Sometimes they act like the very thing that’s intended as a

great and wonderful gift for them – rest! – is some kind of

punishment. Well, that’s when it’s good for the kids to have

someone to help them. They need naps, and they need par-

ents to help make sure they get them.

And this is just how it is with adults, and Sabbath.

Are you feeling tired? Worn out? Prone to sighing and feel-

ing discouraged? “Come to me.” Jesus says, “Get away with

me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you

. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I

do it. I won’t lay an-

ything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me

and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” That’s Matthew

11:28-30 in The Message.

I’ll be teaching about rest on Labor Day Sunday, September

2nd

in worship. Kinda fitting don’t you think? Sabbath is like

naps for adults, so come and l’ll share with you what I’ve

learned about “taking a real rest.”

And if you happen to nod off during the sermon, well, that’s

ok too. You probably need it.

Contemplative Worship

(2nd

and 4th Wednesdays of the Month)

Most of us have a sense that there’s more to our

Christian lives than we are experiencing. Fortu-

nately for us the Christian church through the ag-

es has developed practices to deepen our aware-

ness of God’s presence.

Contemplative Practice is one of them. Come for

a time of worship unlike any you have experi-

enced: a little singing, scripture, a time of silence

in the presence of other worshippers and Holy

Communion.

Many of our most inspiring

writers and writings focus on

prayer and contemplation. It

is not a way out of the world

but a way to prepare to en-

gage the world more fully. We

are presently studying the

Christian classic, The Cloud of

Unknowing.

Come and practice!

You are invited to participate in a new

series for the fall based on the study of,

The back of the book

says it well, “For nearly 300 years this un-

paralleled classic has given both blessing

and instruction to those who can be content

with nothing less than knowing God in all His

majesty and feeling His lov-

ing presence thought each

simple day.”

The collection of Brother

Lawrence’s works is only 95

pages long. But the depth

of his Christian wisdom is

eternal.

Copies of the book will be

available for $6.00.

ADULT FORUM IS BACK!

Following our summer “break” we are eager to begin our programming

once again. We meet in the lounge following the worship service

(approximately 10:40am and end by 11:30am). If you wish, bring a cup of

coffee with you as we consider a wide variety of topics. You are welcome

at one session to hear a special topic or speaker or you are welcome every

Sunday.

I’ve been invited to kick off the Adult Forum series this fall by sharing my own perspectives and ex-

periences around faith and science, which I am delighted to do! I grew up in an environment where

both of these were nourished and encouraged, and went so far as to get a Ph.D. in Molecular Biolo-

gy before my vocation rounded a corner and sent me in the direction of Seminary. So this isn’t just

a topic of interest to me, it’s been woven into my life and my mind for a long, long time. The Forum

will be on . I hope to see you there! Pastor Tim

involves the misuse of and addiction to opioids such as prescription drugs,

heroin and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl is a serious national crisis that affect public health as

well as social and economic welfare. We are honored to have , an addiction medi-

cine physician, speak to us and engage in conversation.

We are blessed at St. Stephen’s to have a direct connection to local churches and preaching points

in Returning travelers and will speak about their latest

experiences at congregations as we continue our connection!

Join Pastor John for a conversation about the meaning of baptism in the Christian life. All those

desiring the sacrament of baptism are required to receive instruction. Please contact the church

office if you are planning to attend.

As of the time of this writing the Executive Committee is in

conversation with prospective candidates. We will be organiz-

ing interviewing committees when appropriate.

We remain amazed at the energy and collaborative spirit that

Tracy Westman is bringing to her new position as Education

Coordinator of Children and Youth Faith Formation.

Pastor Tim has been working on a written introduction to the ten discipleship tools he’s been

teaching us about this past year. This is going to be printed up and made available to the congre-

gation on To celebrate, we’ll be having a

in the Fellowship Hall. Pastor Tim will give us a brief introduction to what’s in the Toolbox

and everyone who comes will get a special gift as well – a laminated Toolbox bookmark for your

Bible! So mark your calendars and if you can, let us know you’ll be coming so we can order the

right amount of food. Then… get ready to build something for the Kingdom!

TIM’s TOOLBOX RELEASE PARTY Sunday, September 16th!

When I introduced the Road Trip metaphor last year it was a way of saying that we were going to

look at two broad themes. We'd begin with what it means to BE a disciple, and then for the "return

trip" dig into what it means to MAKE disciples. As we begin our second year on the road it will soon

be time to make the turn towards home. The schedule is still being worked out as I write this arti-

cle, so watch for more details soon to come! - Pastor Tim

Member Contributions

July Year-to-Date Annual

Budget Actual Variance Budget

$247,037 $253,658 $6,621 $429,900

The figures above provide a comparison of budget vs. actual member contributions.

Help us continue by experiencing

the transforming joy of faith-filled stewardship!

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows individuals 70 1/2 years old or older to donate to a

charity like St. Stephen’s directly from their IRA instead of taking a taxable Required Minimum Dis-

tribution (RMD). This tax-savvy strategy is sometimes called an because you

have your retirement plan (like Vanguard) send your Required Minimum Distribution directly to the

charity (like St. Stephen’s). Then you don’t have to pay taxes on the distribution (!!) AND you help

the church meet its missions.

Several retired members of St. Stephen’s are using this strategy to reduce taxes and increase their

giving to the church. Here is an example. You are 71 years old and have an IRA at Vanguard with a

balance of $200,000. Vanguard says you have to take an RMD this year of $10,000. If they send

the RMD check to you, you will owe income taxes on the $10,000. So instead, you instruct Van-

guard to send the distribution directly to St. Stephen’s via an IRA direct transfer. Now you owe no

taxes on this distribution. You further notify St. Stephen’s that you want $5,000 of the donated

money to go to meet your pledge, $3,000 to go to help our missions (Tanzania, Neighbors, World

Hunger, LMD, etc.), and $2,000 to go to the Foundation for future improvements to the church

building. What a Win-Win!!

If you have any questions about IRA direct transfers, please contact Dave Bergeson (455-1891).

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who has

contributed to the Tanzania Visitor

travel fund. As of the end of July,

$8,300 has been received to help

cover the costs of passports, visas,

transportation, and interpreter ex-

penses. Special thanks to those

who organized, donated items, and

made purchases at the garage sale

on Saturday, July 13th

. A total of

$5,0000 was raised!

If you would like to contribute, do-

nations clearly marked for the Tan-

zania Visitor fund can be placed in

the offering on Sunday mornings

or sent to the church office.

At a recent summit of ELCA synods and ELCT dioceses in Tanzania, Nayman Cha-

valla, General Secretary of the Iringa Diocese, shared the following thoughts:

“We need to visit one another, to know our different customs and norms. We

learn a lot. When we visit, we exchange the way we live. We understand each oth-

er better ….. the SPAS/DIRA partnership is so strong because of the people.”

Our partnership with Ihimbo and Iwonde has been strengthened through the

sharing of experiences, meals, worship, music, and prayer during visits by St.

Stephen’s members to Tanzania. Upon their return to Minnesota, the St. Ste-

phen’s travelers are able to share greetings, stories, and pictures that provide

members here a glimpse into the lives of the people of Ihimbo and Iwonde.

By welcoming visitors from Tanzania to Minnesota, St. Stephen’s will be able to

return the hospitality of our Tanzania brothers and sisters while deepening their

understanding of life in Minnesota and the ministries of St. Stephen’s. In addi-

tion, all members of St. Stephen’s will have the opportunity to spend time with

the visitors and, through them, develop personal ties with our partner villages.

Bega Kwa Bega, a Swahili phrase meaning ‘shoulder to shoul-

der’, is the name of the relationship between the St. Paul Area

Synod and the Iringa Diocese in Tanzania. This relationship is

a joint ministry of partnered congregations who walk side by

side with one another, learn from one another, and strengthen

one other as communities of faith.

Plans are being made to host three visitors from Ihimbo and

Iwonde, our partner villages in the Iringa Diocese. Timing for

the visit will depend on when the necessary travel documents

are obtained. Please keep these visitors in your prayers as they

apply and interview for travel visas.

Hello and blessings to all. My name is Tracy Westman and I am taking on the wonderful responsi-

bility of Faith Formation with our youth and families. I will be working limited hours (I am still a

full-time physical education teacher) but am excited by the possibilities that will be happening

here at St. Stephen’s for both St. Stephen’s and Salem Lutheran youngsters and families.

The Education Committee’s have been hard at work this summer planning and preparing for the

great year ahead. If you have questions about anything please contact: Tracy at 651-457-6541

or [email protected] OR Pastor Julie at 651-457-6661 or [email protected]

There will be a new curriculum called

. This new curriculum will help us to

transform with God’s light and then shine his light

in the world.

was sent by

email---please look for it and get your youngster(s)

registered so we can be prepared for them! Regis-

tration is also on the St. Stephen’s and Salem Face-

book pages...if you did not receive the email or can-

not get to Facebook and want to register you can

call Jan at St. Stephen’s 651-457-6541 or Pastor

Julie at Salem and they can help you register. Here

by all adults in the community

(you do not have to plan a meal for Wednesday---just come as a family and eat!)

(casual and a small taste of worshiping together)

(you can attend your child's class and learn with them or attend an adult option)

We strongly encourage you to make Wednesday Night a family night

of Faith Formation—1 hour a week to begin or continue faith building

with your family. A church can help to plant the faith seeds, but the

faith seeds are nurtured and grown at home—we at St. Stephen's and

Salem want to help you be the strongest family you can be!

WE LOVE TO SEE FAMILIES (PARENTS AND KIDS TOGETHER) IN SUNDAY WORSHIP AT 9:30 AM!

for our youngest ones and their parents—birth to

age 3. This will be an opportunity to meet other parents as well as

begin the faith journey with your child! It will take place for 30

minutes following the morning church service.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. - Romans 12:2 NRSV

CAN YOU HELP? WE NEED YOU! We am looking for volunteers of all ages to help in the Faith Formation of our young ones… you do not need a kid in Faith Formation to be a volunteer! Here’s some ideas:

People who like to shop for supplies!

People w

ho can teach!

People with musical ability!

People who can smile and read to a kid!

People who are great organizers! People who are good on computers!

OR SOMETHING ELSE!!!!

People who can sew!

People who are greeters!

People who can help in the kitchen!

Please call and talk to Tracy or Pastor Julie...there is room for you to help!

Sunday Breakfast

A great way to meet people and serve at St. Stephen’s. Individuals and fami-lies are encourage to help. Please contact Patrice Katzenmaier to sched-ule a Sunday. 612-432-9992

at

We walk for 20-30 minutes

or so in the gym of the Noreen Center. Some

people walk more, some less–everyone at

their own pace. We have some music on as we

walk. A glass of water in the lounge is our re-

ward.

This is a good time for conversation. Bring a

friend with you from St. Stephen’s or from

some other church or from your neighbor-

hood. All are welcome!

St Stephen’s Lutheran Church, ELCA

West St. Paul, MN 55118-2999

Volume 2018 Issue 9 (No issue 8)

This day is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the ELCA—one church, freed in Christ to serve and

love our neighbor. On that day we will be joining with Lutherans all across the country in serving the com-

munities in which we live. A number of activities are planned for that day beginning at 10:30 and we invite

you to join us. Planned events include:

We will deliver treats to local police and fire departments. Donations of baked goods, fruit, etc. are

needed.

We will make sandwiches to deliver to homeless. Watch for specific information on how you can

donate supplies.

We will tie fleece blankets, donations of fleece are welcome.

Whatever project you feel drawn to help with, we hope to see you on Sunday, September 9th for

God’s Work. Our hands. Sunday!
