THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
The St. Elizabeth Conference of the Soci-
ety of St. Vincent De Paul would like to thank
all of you for your support of our annual
Lenten Fish Fry dinner. Through your generosity, we were
able to net approximately $2,500, making this a very profit-
able fund raiser for our conference. All proceeds from the
event will be distributed to the needy of our parish commu-
nity through food, shelter and clothing. Blessings to all who
continue to support our efforts!
THE GOOD SHEPHERD
This Fourth Sunday of
Easter is traditionally re-
ferred to as “Good Shep-
herd Sunday.” Today we
listen to the words of the
Lord as he refers to him-
self as the “good shepherd
who lays down his life for
the sheep.” It is sometimes
so difficult for us to grasp
the reality that anyone would lay down his or her own life
for the sake of someone else. This is especially true in a
society that places high value on power and personal ad-
vancement, often at the cost of “trampling” on other peo-
ple in order to climb the ladder. Today’s scriptures point
to the one we are called to emulate—the one who lays
down his life for his sheep. Today’s scriptures challenge us
to discover ways to bring life to those around us—to build
up rather than to tear down. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
MEET OUR NEW PRINCIPAL
I am very pleased to announce
that we have found and hired
a new principal for our school,
Richard Gruttadaurio. The
Search Committee and I be-
lieve that he is not only a
highly qualified individual, but
a very good fit for our school.
Please, welcome Richard as he
begins this new and exciting
journey with us at St. Elizabeth’s. You can read a brief
biography below.
Fr. Modesto
Richard Gruttadaurio attended Glendora High School and
graduated in 1985. He went on to Cal Poly, Pomona and
earned a business degree focusing on Hotel, Restaurant
Management. During his high school and college years he
was the assistant manager for Carl’s Jr. Restaurant.
There, he developed the skills needed to run a successful
business. After college he entered the training program
for Enterprise Rent-A-Car and worked his way up to as-
sistant branch manager. Entering college his desire was to
be a music education major and become a high school band
director. Even though he changed majors, his desire to
educate children never left him. He decided to go back to
school to become an elementary school teacher. He was
quickly hired on to teach 7th grade and St. Dorothy School
in Glendora. This began his twenty year path as an elemen-
tary and middle school teacher. Along the way, he earned
his master’s degree in Educational Leadership, an ad-
vanced degree in GATE education, and mostly recently his
ELL endorsement. He has taught in both public and pri-
vate schools in grades 4th through 8th. He is especially
skilled in teaching middle school math. At present, he is
teaching middle school at St. Joseph Pomona. When he is
not teaching, he spends his time with his wife of eighteen
years and their sixteen year old son, who is a sophomore
at Glendora High School. He serves on the executive
board for the Glendora High School Band Boosters. He is
a huge sport’s fan, following the 49ers, Patriots, and An-
gels. The opportunity to become principal for such an
amazing school community has been a dream of his for a
long time and something which he is ready to get started.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Many of our customs surrounding critical illness come
from antiquity, and yet attitudes have certainly changed.
Death was an all‑too-familiar presence then, and people
tended to see it as a natural and unavoidable part of life, not
a personal catastrophe. People tried to review their lives,
settle their affairs, say farewell to their dear ones, and wel-
come the deathbed vigils and prayers that assured them of
God’s love and forgiveness. What people most feared was
sudden death. It was dreaded and never discussed.
The faithful filled the catacombs with consoling images of
the good shepherd carrying the sheep to safe pasture, or the
faithful in glory seated at banquet tables. The prayer texts
from the time are consoling and positive, and many inspired
our modern prayers. The care of the dying flowed directly
from Roman pagan practice; it was home‑based and family‑-
centered. Pagans didn’t especially fear death, but they were
terrified by the dead. Christians, on the other hand, consoled
their sick with psalms of joy and faith in the Resurrection.
The goal was to assure the sick person of God’s love, and that
the ties that bind the dead and the living would endure. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
