Western Suburbs RLFC - “A Collection of Team photos over the Years – (January 2016, around 100 pages)

This booklet Western Suburbs RLFC “The Rosellas” – 2017 continues to update the history and records of this great club. Like all

previous booklets the aim is to make all of West’s History and Records available to everyone. All the information in this booklet is

readily available on the football club website www.westrosellas.com.au . Please “download” and “print off” any or all of the many files

on the website. Also a Facebook page, West Rosellas RLFC, was started this year, but the time consuming nature of such a page, is

most probably too much for this old bloke.

Seven copies of this booklet have been printed. One copy has been placed in the Reference Section of Newcastle Library (Laman

Street), one in the “Football Room” at West’s Bowling Club, one is with Owen Kilpatrick, one is with Trish Evenden and one is with

Barbara Paterson at West Leagues Club, New Lambton. The other two copies are held by me.

There are two new features this year. Firstly, Wests players have been allocated a “Playing Number” and this list first appears in this

booklet. Secondly, Ladies League Tag was started this year, and thus the first of the League Tag records appear in this booklet.

The other notable feature in 2017 was that West will “own” the Newcastle Knights from November this year. These books are about

West, not about the Knights. However, it should be noted that this club, that failed to win a Premiership from 1922 through to 1961,

and were the then “easy beats” of the Newcastle competition, have now turned “full circle”, and are playing on the biggest stage…and

that makes me really “chuffed”.

Of particular interest in this 2017 booklet is an article about John Hobby, and I commend this article to you. Other articles are of Owen

Kilpatrick, Neville Rounsley, Brett Cullen, Brian Stanbridge, Arthur Green and Glen Maloney.

Also, you will note that the booklet has been enhanced by the wonderful action photos of Trish Evenden. I would like to place on

record my appreciation to Trish for the wonderful photos she provides for the website and for West publications.

This football club has given me countless times more enjoyment than what I have given to the club. From the youngest of age I have

“watched West”, and for me, in my later years, to have played a role in the football club, gives me satisfaction beyond belief.

Hopefully, some younger person will “come along” in the next few years and “continue the journey”. As per the previous booklets,

there is only one thing remaining to be said….

Have you ever seen

A better football team

Than the one that plays for West…….

2017 AWord/West/Website/A4 Folder – From the Beginning/ 2017

In 2017 West appointed Matt Lantry (pictured) as 1st Grade coach. Matt had played with West in 2005 and later graduated to coaching ranks, winning the 2015 NSW Cup with the Knights. Laurie Clifton was appointed as Reserve Grade Coach, Russell Petrie continued on as Under 19’s Coach and Brett Howard was appointed coach of the newly formed Ladies League Tag (although Chris Stephens and Matt Atkinson took over in the 2nd half of the season). During the season First Grade were the form team in the competition, but on Grand Final day they were well beaten by Macquarie – so congratulations to the “Scorps”. Reserve Grade came back from a disappointing first round (and two consecutive GF defeats) to win the Grand Final by 31 – 12 over South. The West team was 1. Michael Hendry (try, goal), 2. Dan Stuart 3. Clint Davies 4. Luke Poolman 5. Jordan Hammond 6. Tim Holman (try, fg), 7 Jade Porter (2 tries, 4 goals, Deserved “MAN OF THE MATCH”), 8. David Dryden 9. Liam McKenna (try) 10. Luke Single 11. Matt Casserly 12. Mark Farrar 13. Luifua Fonua 14. Nic Mahon 15. Villi Ieru 16. Manu Matoka 17. Jack Geddes 18. Michael Deacon 19. Josh Gorton. Some records in Reserve Grade – Luke Poolman broke the record for “Most Games” and “Most Tries”, while Liam McKenna joined 1960’s players, Barry Martin and Kevin Hodgson, having now won Grand Finals in all 3 grades. Under 19’s

won 3 games this year, and in the inaugural season, the League Tag team were beaten in the final. At Presentation Night, Ryan Walker (First), Luke Single (Reserve), Finau Taufaao (19’s) and Grace Gallagher (League Tag) won the trophies for “Most Outstanding Player”. Russell Grigg (pictured) was awarded the “Clubman of the Year” trophy. New players to the club included Ryan Walker (who scooped the awards pool at Newcastle RL and West). New players were Ryan Walker, Uiti Baker, Mao Uta, James Elias and Ben Stone. Matt Lantry won the Newcastle RL “Coach of the Year” - hard to win for a West coach. Life Membership badges were presented to Liam McKenna, Josh Gorton, Matt Herman and Simon Williams (who equalled Paul Skovgaard’s record in that his first 100 games for West were all in 1st Grade)
