Professional Style mustbe versatile!

While I am in the middle of cleaningout my closets, I have noticed that mystyle has evolved over the years. Cur-rently, I am leaning towards the mini-malist look and that means I have agreat deal of organizing to do. Alongwith a minimalist style of dressing com-ing a minimalist style for my naturalhair.

As a naturally professional careerwoman, there are a few guidelines thatI follow that may help others to achievea well-groomed look with a low level ofmaintenance. e first step is a greathaircut that emphasizes the curls andtexture of my hair. I checked the refer-ences for anyone who has ever cut myhair and then I spent time talking be-fore he or she started cutting! After get-ting the right cut, I learned how toselect the proper line of products to en-sure the health and achieve the bestpossible style.

Natural hair is not always easy tohandle and no one should make themistake of just washing and going! It isnecessary to shampoo to cleanse, con-dition to protect, add leave-in condi-tioner to lock in the moisture, and then

add gel to encourage defined curls.ese steps are required to achieve thecarefree look that is referred to as natu-ral!

On days when I cannot start fromscratch, my natural curls often fightagainst my efforts to look professional.at’s when I pull out my water bottlefor spritzing, brush, gel, and hair tiesfor securing into a smooth ponytail, tight roll or sleek bun.

Robin is a natural hair enthusiastwho combines her career experience asa writer, educator and media strategistto promote achievement of personalgoals.

It has been said “A title does notmake the man, the man makes the title”.When it comes to titles, David A.Northern, Sr. is a man of many. Execu-tive Director, Chief Executive Officer,School Board Member, Merit Commis-sioner, Mentor, youth sports coach, church deacon in training, and commu-nity advocate are some of the titles heholds.

e People’s Voice wanted to go be-yond the titles to get to know the man;a man who has gone above and beyondfor citizens in Lake County, Illinois -propelling them toward self-sufficiency,social mobility, and economic integra-tion.

Q: David, you are the first AfricanAmerican Executive Director/CEO ofLake County Housing Authority. Youare also the first African America electedto Board of Education of CommunityConsolidated School District 46. Howdoes it feel to be a “first” in those posi-tion(s)?

A: I am privileged to have been the first.Diversity is one of our greatest strengths.I feel fortunate to be able to advocate forthe needs of all citizens. If you're blessedenough to be successful, it's your re-sponsibility to send the elevator backdown for others.

Q: How does it feel to be CEO of Lake County Housing Authority?

A: CEO can be a lonely position at times. An entire organizationdepends on your leadership so one must have the confidence to makethe tough decisions. But it feels great! I am here because I have de-livered based on the expectations set for me. Years of service, experi-ence, and education qualifies me for this community leadershipposition. I am honored to answer the call to address housing relatedneeds of the citizens of Lake County, but as a leader in the industry,I am equally honored about what I do for the nation. Later this sum-mer I will take office as Vice President of Housing for the PublicHousing Authorities Directors Association (DC), which representsapproximately 1,900 housing authorities throughout the UnitedStates. PHADA works closely with members of Congress in effortsto develop sensible and effective public housing statutes and obtainadequate funding for affordable housing programs. e associationalso serves as an advocate before the U.S. Department of Housingand Urban Development on a variety of regulations governing afford-able housing nationwide.

Q: You are a deacon in training at Greater Faith Church Baptist inWaukegan, Illinois. What is your favorite scripture?

A: But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was

bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantlythan they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. “(1Corinthians 15:10). I love this scripture because it embodies my lifeexperience. God’s grace and favor is the foundation upon which allmy success was built.

Q: What's been the highlight of your career thus far?

A: I have been fortunate to accomplish much. I was profiled inEbony magazine, honored as “Graduate of the Last Decade” fromBall State University, and“ Most Influential African-American ofLake County”, just to name a few. e work itself is fulfilling becauseit is my passion to serve. To be recognized for this passion is reallythe icing on the cake.

But I would have to say undoubtedly the biggest day of my pro-fessional career to date happened with Lake County Housing Au-thority on March 3, 2017, as we broke ground on the innovative andtransformative development “Brookstone and Regency at ColesPark”. ere were many long nights and disappointing moments;however our team was able move forward on this $49 million devel-opment. We will bring 220 units of affordable housing to the com-munity of Lake County, improving not only the quality of affordablehousing in the city of North Chicago, but significantly changing theeconomic atmosphere of this community.

The 220 unit, $49 million development which will be called the “Brookstone and Regency at ColesPark” in North Chicago is the brain child of housing pioneer, David A. Northern, Sr.

Winston Churchill was the prime minister of England duringWorld War II. He led the British people through very dark days. When France surrendered to Germany in June 1940, England wasleft alone to fight the Germans. e air force was badly outnum-bered, and the nation was under almost constant attack. But evenwhen defeat seemed certain, Churchill never gave up. Within fiveyears Germany had been defeated and Europe was once again atpeace.

On October 29, 1941, Churchill stood before a gathering ofstudents at Harvard School in England. Every voice in the roomwas hushed. Every face was turned toward the great leader. Everyear strained to hear every word from the great man’s lips.Churchill banged the podium with his fist. “Never give in! he said.“Never give in. Never, never, never, in nothing great or small, largeor petty, never give in except to convictions of honor and goodsense.” And with that he sat down. His speech was over. It wasprobably the shortest speechthese students had everheard but one they wouldnever forget. is shortsimple speech expressed thespirit of Winston Churchillit also expresses God’s willfor the Christian.

Churchill gave wonderfuladvice to the students ofHarvard School when hesaid Never give in.” ButGod doesn’t advise us never to give in: he commands it! God’s wordsays that we are to “run with perseverance the race marked out forus” Hebrews 12:1 NIV). He commands us to “Never get tired ofdoing good” (2 essalonians 3:13). He says “Don’t get discour-aged and give up” (Galatians 6:9).

Are you tired of always being the “good” kid? God says, Nevergive in!” Do you feel like you’ve been tempted so much lately thatyou’re too weak to resist anymore? God says never give in! Do youfeel like giving up trying to make right choices all the time? Godsays, “Never, Never, never, never, never, never, never give in.”

God commands us to persevere. He wants us to learn how tostick to a job. He wants us to keep trying even when we are tiredand discouraged. He wants us to never, never, never, Never, never,

Never, Never give in. Selah.

Q: What are your thoughts on the current political environment?

A: My thoughts are that in politics, there are no permanent enemies nor per-manent friends only, permanent interests! Not about parties it's about progress. If we are to succeed in our mission, we must recognize that community rede-velopment is not about political parties. And it is not solely about providingbricks and mortar. We must focus on the wraparound services which will createhealthy and thriving communities for all citizens.

Q: Who does a man of your stature go to for help?

A: God first, my wife, and my mom and dad! I recently lost my father, whowas a great force in my life. A man of vision needs a partner who is supportive, consistent, and a voice of reason. I am blessed to have all that and more in mywife, Crystal. My children are my motivation. I also have my board which isa group of amazing individuals from all disciplines of life. I have what we referto in the housing industry as a “Power Circle”.

ere is nothing in this world deeper than loyalty, friendship and love andI am fortunate to have my “Power Circle”.

We would like to thank David A. Northern, Sr. for this exclusive inter-view. We wish him the very best in all his future endeavors as he continues toserve the great community of Lake County.

LOCKHART-WHITE REPORTApril 2017

The

A communique of the Community Action Partnership of Lake County

How Parents Affects Children's Wellbeing

How much time parents spendwith their children (rather than atwork) and when in their children'slives they trade off time at homewith employment or pleasure, whatparents do in the time they spendwith their children—or how theyinteract, and the quality of those in-teractions—is very important totheir children's wellbeing.

Psychological and sociologicaltheories suggest that the types of in-teractions parents have with theirchildren can be influenced by anumber of factors, both at work andelsewhere.

For example, are there two par-ents in the household, and are bothworking? How involved is themother vis-à-vis the father (or othercaregiver) in hands-on care of thechildren? How do the quality of theparents' jobs, the stress they experi-ence at work, their relationship as acouple and as a family, the chil-dren's gender, and other factors af-fect the parents' interactions withand availability to the children? Ingeneral, how central is child rearingin the lives of the parents and thefamily?

For older children in particular, these theories also suggest that par-ents play an important part as rolemodels through work and caregiv-ing. Children and adolescents maychange their own behavior andgoals in response to the behaviormodeled by their parents; for exam-ple, they might devote more time totheir studies to increase their ownfuture job prospects. In lower-in-come families where work replaceswelfare, reliance on welfare may ap-

pear lessattractive(or self-sufficiencymore re-warding),a n dt e e n a g echildbearing and other risky activi-ties may be reduced. Once again, many factors may help determinehow parents as role models influ-ence their children's wellbeing.

In addition to how much timeparents spend with their children(rather than at work) and when intheir children's lives they trade offtime at home with other social ac-tivities or allow computer games totake control, what parents do in thetime they spend with their chil-dren—or how they interact, and thequality of those interactions—isalso very important to their chil-dren's wellbeing.
