A Note from the Conductor. . .Dear Friends,

Collaboration is always at the heart of music-making. Even when listening to a solo instrumentalist, we are eavesdropping on their process of “collaborating”, doing their utmost to realize and honor the composer’s wishes while bringing something of their self to the proceedings as well.

For this concert, the orchestra and I are pleased to offer three very different collaborations: the Sammamish Symphony debut of soprano Anjulie Djearam (winner of our Young Artist Competition last year), our own principal harp Bethany Man in one of the literature’s great test-pieces for her instrument, and the return of The Liberty Singers under the direction of Robin Wood, our dear friends who have made our last several holiday concerts in December that much more special.

May the joy of our musical alliances bring you special pleasure as well.

Warmest regards, Adam Stern Music Director and Conductor, Sammamish Symphony Orchestra

Bethany Man, harpBethany Man was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. She primarily studied harp with the esteemed Lynne Wainwright Palmer. Bethany was graduated from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN and studied harp performance with Suzanne Davids and choral accompaniment with Dr. Nancy Menk.

Bethany has been the principal harpist with the Sammamish Symphony since 2011. Along with her orchestral, chamber and choral accompanying

work, Bethany is an active freelancer in the greater Seattle area. Her popular music experience is equally notable, as she has performed on stage with: Lindsey Sterling, Evanescence, Idina Menzel, Josh Groban, Celtic Woman, David Lanz, and David Benoit, among others. Bethany can also be heard on movie/TV/video game soundtracks. She is also a private harp and piano teacher. Her daughter, Nadia (10) is also a budding harpist. Nadia studies with Valerie Muzzolini, harpist of the Seattle Symphony, and performs with the Seattle Youth Symphony. Bethany and her family live in Bothell.

Program Note

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Franz Peter Schubert

Sir Arthur Sullivan

Claude Debussy

A Concert of Contrasting Delightsby Adam Stern

In this wide-ranging program, the Sammamish Symphony and a handful of special guests show their diverse skills in presenting music for the theater (Mozart’s Impresario, Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, and Debussy’s The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian), from the world of sacred music (Schubert’s Ave Maria and Mozart’s Laudate Dominum), and music written purely for the concert-hall (Debussy’s Danses and Nocturnes).

Even within these categories, variety reigns: Mozart’s quicksilver overture to The Impresario is as spirited and sparkling as the intrigues-and-egos-in-showbiz plot of the singspiel that follows, Poor Wandering One is one of the most affecting arias from a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta (the more so within the context of its creators’ characteristic storyline high-jinks), and Debussy’s Martyrdom is a starkly beautiful “mystery play” that perfectly mirrors its wrenching and ultimately transfiguring subject matter.

The excerpts from Mozart’s and Schubert’s sacred works, while similar in their moderate tempos and meditative mood, nonetheless speak to their composers’ individual personalities and the respective Classical and Romantic milieus in which they were conceived.

Finally, Debussy’s two works for the concert stage are testaments to their composer’s unending heterogeneity. The Danses sacrée et profane (Sacred and Profane Dances) transcends its utilitarian conception (it was written to showcase the Pleyel double-action harp), yielding sounds both transparent and voluptuous; the accompaniment of a strings-only ensemble ensures an absolutely clarity of utterance. The three Nocturnes for orchestra are rightfully regarded as one of Debussy’s masterworks for full orchestra (alongside the Images and La Mer), and are equally successful whether listened to as “pure” music or evocations of the langorous movement of clouds, the nighttime revelries, or the seductive sirens suggested by their titles.
