Kraft Words from the Pastor... The very first holy day or holiday celebration of the church was Easter. From our beginnings, the celebration of the passion of Christ for the people of God has been central to our faith. We come together on Sunday to worship God instead of the traditional Sabbath day – Saturday, because of our attachment to the celebration of Easter. Every Sunday gathering of God’s people is intended to be a “little Easter”, a reminder of the life, sacrifice and resurrection of Christ. Easter moves each year because it is attached to the historical events of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus which occurred at the end of the week of the Jewish Passover which is attached to the cycles of the moon rather than a calendar date. Before there ever was a Christmas, there was Easter and then the forty day time of preparation before Easter known as Lent. That time traditional begins with Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) followed by Ash Wednesday. These two celebrations created a balance between celebration and confession and paved the way to a forty day period of self-denial and prayerful introspection. It was also during this time that the new candidates seeking admission to the church underwent a period of examination before they were admitted into full membership in the church. That examination went into high gear beginning on the Thursday before Easter known as Maundy Thursday with the re-enactment of the Last Supper followed by a lengthy prayer vigil on Friday that lasted through to Saturday. Finally in the early hours of Easter Sunday the new candidates would be baptized and anointed with oil before they gained admission into the Body of Christ. We will join in some of these traditions of our faith this season. There are currently 12 people attending our new member class. We have several adults that are currently considering baptism and a first time profession of faith. Our youth Confirmation Class will begin meeting on Sunday March 1 and these youth will be joining the church on the Sunday of Pentecost, May 31. There are signs of growth and signs of hope as we enter into the season of eternal hope – Spring. There is much in the world these days that is uncertain and anxiety producing. Even our church leadership has been cautious as we look into our ministry for the coming year. Yet our growth is clear, our finances are strong and your continued commitment to Christ through the ministry of our church is evident. God does God’s best work when our lives are off center and uncertain. We tend to neglect God and all that God does for us when everything is going well, thinking that somehow it is we that have accomplished it all. Lent, and the times in which we live, are a vital reminder of where our help comes from: Psalm 124:8 Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth! From the Director of Discipleship

I have really enjoyed starting to work as your Director of Discipleship. Shirley Cecil and Debbi have helped me compile a current list of visitors to our church. I wrote a letter explaining the New Member Class that was beginning on Febru-ary 8th, and I invited them all to attend. Then I began work on the New Member Class lesson book. On February 8th we had 11 great people in our New Member Class. After listening to their questions about the United Methodist Church, I decided I needed to learn more, too.

Last week I researched the United Methodist Church. Being a Methodist since I was 4, I thought I was knowledgeable. I had NO idea how ignorant I was about our history and the structure and design of the church today. I dug into the official website (www.umc.org), read, and took notes. WOW!!! I learned so much! From the notes I wrote a lesson about the structure and beliefs of the United Methodist Church. I LOVED IT!!! The lesson went well. We even had a quiz! We had 1 more member to attend, bringing the total number to 12. This week I am working on the history of the United Methodist Church and the history of Archdale United Methodist Church, complete with a field trip! The last lesson will be on the programs that we have here at the church and how they can become involved. It is a great class, and I hope that they are having as much fun as I am.

We will begin another New Member Class on April 19, 2009. Between classes I will put some of the lesson books out so you can look at them. I guarantee you will learn a lot! For example, did you know there are 8 million United Methodists in the United States today? We are the 2nd largest denomination in America; second only to…... you guessed it – the Southern Baptists.

What are you waiting for? Get out there and invite people to church. I am ready for them, and I certainly do not want the Baptists beating us. How many people can you invite to church this month? Remember the Great Commission of Jesus.

Go make of all disciples.

Sincerely, Cheryl Traylor

On Sunday, March 8th at 2am, Daylight Savings Time ends. Remember before you go to bed the night before to set your clock

Happy Birthday UMWHappy Birthday UMWHappy Birthday UMWHappy Birthday UMW 140 years in Mission

1869—2009

From 1869 to 1893, our foremothers organized eight foreign and home missionary societies...the first was the Woman’s For-eign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the last was the Woman’s Home Society of the Methodist Prot-estant Church. Through various denominational unions and mergers, the organization that became known as the United Methodist Women experienced change in names and struc-ture. However, the purpose has remained the same. Like our predecessors, members of UMW have made a lifetime commit-ment to Christ’s mission in the world. For over a century, mem-bers have united to pray together, to raise funds for mission, and to improve the lives of women, children, and youth around the world. Let’s renew our life in mission with the zeal of our foremothers!

Box Tops for Education A special thanks to all of you who have collected box tops for

education for the students at ATMS. With your help, we have sent over 6000 box tops in this year! General Mills has

awarded us $600 in money for PE equipment. Keep them coming….

I appreciate your support in our school..
