“OSI PI” – Project Goals

•Provide a platform for students to access the campus energy consumption and have the ability to create scenarios that reduce energy and greenhouse gas creation.

•Create the ability to combine data from multiple sources into one common repository to simplify use.

•Develop a data archive that can be accessed to provide before and after evidence of benefits.

•Create an opportunity for students to understand energy flows in a real world environment.

Campus Background

• Total # Buildings > 350

• Total Building Area ~ 5.0M SQ FT

• 2014 Annual Cost of Electricity = $8.3 Million

> 100 electric accounts with “smart meters”

• 2014 Annual cost of Heating = $3.8 Million > 100 gas meters

• Central Cooling & Heating Plants 3 separate control systems which do not “talk” to each other:

Delta V, Honeywell, and Johnson Controls

~ 100 boilers and ~ 50 cooling units

Why does UVM want to use OSI PI? • The software works. It ’s proven technology.

• It is embedded in the Delta V controls in the Central Heating Plant

• It ’s cheaper than replacing all existing controls at UVM into one common platform

• Many configurable displays. limited only by our creativity

• We’ll GET THE FACTS to be able to make informed decisions for:

• What is the load

• Determining when to turn equipment on/off

• Optimize operations

• What is the cost of heating or cooling

• Managing the power demand kW $

• Diagnosing equipment

• Individual building operational costs

25

OSI PI Implementation: Where are we now?

• The PC’s are here

• “UVM Cloud” is available to load software

• Software is ready for download

• Network being configured

• Secret Decoder Ring (database) not yet developed

• BED Smart Electric Meters (need more technology to get it to work properly)

• Need to select 2 UVM buildings for beta testing: 1 Honeywell and 1 Johnson Controls building

Page 26: “OSI PI”...“OSI PI” –Project Goals •Provide a platform for students to access the campus energy consumption and have the ability to create scenarios that reduce energy

Summary

• What is it - software

• Who else uses it - lots of people, other campuses nationwide

• Why does UVM want to use it – understand and reactappropriately
