Last night I was privileged to meet many family members during the Parent Evening and attend several information sessions. The evening was well attended, allowing class routines and expectations to be widely shared and setting students up for success. As a new comer I have been visiting classes to see just what is going on… I have learnt many names and met many focussed students while sharing some fabulous learning. Some of the learning opportunities I have shared are: Deconstructing text from Reception
– “Miniscule” to Year 11 “Looking for Alibrandi” Numeracy from Year 5 number patterns to Year 8 algebra Home Economics who celebrated Shrove Tuesday by making pancakes Sketching eyes in Art – not easy at all! Year 10 Science is looking at elements and each property… In each classroom visited, I have been pleased with student focus and the emphasis placed on purposeful activity. Moonta Area School is certainly a delightful place to be and an engaged learning institution.
Congratulations go to Phil Ward who has been appointed to the Senior School Counsellor position for 12 months. We are very fortunate to have Phil who comes to us with a wealth of experience, skill and knowledge about how to support Senior School students in flexible options and post school options. Welcome Phil. Sincerely, Kirsty Amos

Maitland Music and Arts Club Youth Theatre production
Lights, camera... action!! Maitland Music and Arts club is intending to stage a great new rock and roll musical for young people of senior primary to high school age. Following the success of Maitland Music and Arts club’s production of the well-known musical Oliver! in 2011 which featured the performances of 25 children from 5 – 17 years of age, director Leanne Cane proposed the formation of a Youth Theatre group to provide performing arts education and experience for young people. “Little Stars” is written by Steven Harris, Catherine Field and Erin Hardy and follows the behind the scenes story of five finalists (and their neurotic parents) as they compete in the national TV hit sensation singing competition seeking the next ... Little Star! With crooked judges, hyperactive presenters and a live studio audience, it is a wonderful parody of the well-loved Idol TV format....and just as humorous. Participants will have the opportunity to learn singing, dancing and acting skills with the production culminating with performances over the first weekend of May. The club will be holding an information night for intending participants and their parents at the Maitland Area School Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday 13th February, at 7:30 p.m. with auditions the following Sunday. Further information is available from Leanne by phoning 88 373 065.

What are the Year 12 class of 2012 doing in 2013? As mentioned in the last newsletter the Year 12 students and teachers were pleased overall with the Year 12 results. We now know what those results have led to for the students. Five students applied for university positions and all received offers. Blake Pedler was accepted into Construction Management and Economics at UniSA, Alice Ackland will be studying a Bachelor of Design (Visual Communications) at Uni SA, Lucy Ackland will be at Flinders studying a Bachelor of Science (Animal Behaviours), Alice Raunic is commencing a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management at Uni SA, and Aisha Cooper was accepted into Uni SA to study a Bachelor of Psychological Science. Congratulations to all these students who have been justly rewarded for their hard work. We wish you all the best with your studies. The remaining 6 students who completed a full year of Stage 2 study are all working either locally or in Adelaide. We also wish these students every success as they embark on a life outside of school for the very first time. While the class was small by the end of the year, it is extremely pleasing that 100% of students have achieved a positive outcome, as have all those students who left during the year. All have gained employment. As stated last year, we pretty much get out of life what we put into it and again it is heart-warming to see that many of our students are already showing signs of being future leaders and worthwhile contributors to the communities in which they choose to live. Well done class of 2012! Now we start a new year with a new group of 26 students as we endeavour to repeat and improve upon the successes of past years.
