Bench Installed
Check out the new green bench placed on the 1st Avenue
side of the church for all who walk around our neighbor-
hood. The Trustees plan to place it there by May 30th. The
funding was providing by the Endowment funds. We hope
our little town will enjoy using it!
Project Needs Volunteers
Can you spare two hours on June
13th, the Sage-N-Sun celebration
day? Our church will offer a
baby/child comfort station to the
community. We will provide a
place to change diapers (port-a-
potties just don’t do it!), give-away
our abundant supply of 0-2T baby
clothes, stroller, and jumper
chairs. We will serve ice water
and provide access to the Mater-
nity & Infant Closet. We bought a
banner from Pepsi for $25 and will
have news coverage from iFIBER
ONE News. They will also an-
nounce it at the stage setup. A
$30 diaper drawing will also be
held. The scheduled time slots are
10am-12pm, 12pm-2pm, and 2pm-
4pm. We need volunteers to be at
four stations during each time
slot. Can you please help? This is
a caring, visible, and inexpensive
way to show God’s love for Ephra-
ta and it’s people. There is a sign-
up sheet on the kiosk or you can
call the office to volunteer.

Introducing Pastor Harriet Wilkin
by Linda Bryant-Smith, SPR Chairperson
I’d like to share a little more about our new Pastor, Harriet
Wilkin and her husband Jim Fisher. Pastor Harriet grew up
on a dairy farm in rural upstate New York. Like many of us
she did chores at home and when she was old enough got her
first job, taking care of the grass and flower beds at a local
cemetery. She’s held a variety of jobs since then…you’ll see
them listed on the resume we’ve posted in the fellowship hall
and on the Kiosk.
In May she graduated from Seminary at Claremont College in
California with a Master’s of Divinity. She also has a master’s
degree in Communication from Pacific Lutheran University in
Tacoma as well as a degree in Business from Mount St. Mary
College in Newburg, New York.
She and Jim have been married 17 years. She introduced him to SPR as her “partner in min-
istry” and husband of 17 years during our hour-long interview with her last month via
SKYPE. Jim has more than 25 years of service as a paramedic, first with the U.S. Air Force,
and then in the Army Reserve. Following 9/11 he returned to active duty when his reserve
unit was to service.
Through their years of marriage, Jim encouraged her to follow God’s call to a full-time minis-
try. She held many part-time and volunteer positions connected to church organizations in-
cluding teaching Sunday School, director of communications for Tacoma District United
Methodist Women and serving as Youth Director for the United Methodist Church in Univer-
sity Place Finally they made the decision that she should enter seminary as a full-time stu-
dent and she enrolled at Claremont. Prior to graduation, she served an internship as youth
pastor at Riverside First UMC in Riverside, CA. With his active military duties at an end,
Jim took over household duties so she could focus on seminary studies. He says that will be
his task as well when they join us here.
Three years ago they were blessed with their first grandchild, Audrey. Jim’s daughter Krissy
and her husband Sean, Audrey’s parents, live in Puyallup. So this family will have the joy of
sharing many special times together now that gramma and grandpa live just a few hours
away in Ephrata.
“I love church,” Pastor Harriet says. And even as she plans ahead for her ministry with us she
asks about the “health” of our church. “What Spiritual feeding do the members of Ephrata
UMC need or look for in order to move forward in the ministry work that God has called them
to do?” she asks.…”Programs and ministries are great to have, but if people are tired and
need time to rest we need to also recognize and address that in order for the people to live out
the call God has for each of them personally and as a congregation, “ she writes.
This caring, loving servant of God is headed our way. Let us keep Pastor Harriet and Jim in
our prayers for safe travel as they say come north to join God’s church in Ephrata. The con-
gregation will host them at a Welcome Service on July 5 planned by the Worship Committee.
Pastor Harriet will lead our worship the following Sunday and offer Communion.

“Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise” James 5:13
One of the most wonderful gifts we are given is the gift of prayer. We can pray for one another in times of need as well as times of celebration.

Maternity & Infant Closet Schedule
In May, the 120th gift layette for newborns from the United Methodist Women was delivered by a happy group of volunteers to the maternity wing of Good Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake. The layette program for needy moms was originated several years ago by Donna Jancu-ra and reinstated through the efforts of JoAn Isaman, Beverly Dell and Linda Bryant Smith with the support of UMW. Our UMW bag ladies have delivered at least 10 bags a month since April, 2014. Each month a basic clothing layette for each gift bag is selected from the stock in our Mothers and Infants room. The bags also contain a new, handcrafted baby quilt or crocheted shawl. A receiving blanket, often handmade, completes the layette. A card (in Spanish and English) is placed in each bag welcoming the new infant and inviting the family to visit our Mother and Infant's Room. Good Samaritan nurses are always delighted to see UMW bag ladies. They say these gifts of love are needed and welcomed by the mothers who receive them.
Ephrata Senior Center is looking for somebody with a sunny personality that would love to work with a professional chef in the kitchen. Help is needed on the breakfast shift on Tuesdays & Fridays from 7-10 AM and they will be working with general food preparation and serving. If this sounds like something you might be interested in and love working with sen-iors then this might be the opportunity for you! For more information call Karen Bruggman at 509-860-4334 or contact the senior center and ask for Cheryl Jackson
