What aspect or aspects of College Green do you like at the moment? – Typical Comments
• I like the statue of Thomas Davis and the lovely line of trees in the centre. Of course the the beautiful architecture of the Bank of Ireland and the front of Trinity College
• The buildings look wonderful and it could have such a sense of space. The area in front of Trinity College was always what was used to depict Dublin in old paintings, books etc
• Buses are very handy, shops, buildings, history
• I feel like it's a connection of the two sides of the city, once you step off Grafton Street or
come down past central bank and you’re in between Trinity and Dawson street it gives a feel a proper city, tourist, students and Dubs all flying about.
• As long as I have been trading in the immediate locality … College Green has meant
chaos. It is an area that people try and pass through as quickly as possible. It has also become increasingly dangerous.

What would you like to see in a newly laid out College Green? – Typical Comments
• No traffic, pedestrians to walk with ease, entertainment
• Plenty of seating for cafes and tourists - trees needed to fulfil the area
• Less cars, more places to sit / gather chew the cud chats etc. • Clean, green, no traffic, easily accessible on foot, by bicycle or by public transport • No traffic, safe pedestrian pathways, green spaces and for it to be well lit when it gets
dark.
• Access for public transport so that the north of the city is not cut off from the south, for reasons of customers and staff (getting to us).
• Clean open spaces with appropriate seating and space for public exhibitions, concerts or

What should be the most important function of College Green? – Typical Comments • That people are able to get from one side of the city to the other without too much hassle
• Focal point of the city, best buildings around here
• The most important function is a space where people can meet, sit, engage, talk and enjoy the surroundings in the heart of our city.
• It should be an event friendly meeting place
• Make it an outdoor venue and is fun and welcoming and unique to Dublin • Make sure the citizens can interact with it and make event organisation and culture
accessible to ALL. Not just those with deep pockets. There should be little to prevent a Primary school class from holding a concert here if they wish.
• Transport links. The city centre is getting harder and harder to access by car. The south
and north sides are getting cut off from each other

What would be your concerns about the proposed redevelopment of College Green?
– Typical Comments • Concerned that cycling through route would not be provided.
• Dangers of mixing bicycle, pedestrian, Luas and other traffic.
• That it would turn into some awful boom-style "redevelopment" that ignores the needs of locals and
workers in favour of businesses and tourists and as a result makes life even more difficult for the former group.
• Displacement of traffic chaos to another location with all the attendant frustrations. It is hard to re-adjust the mind set of generations of Dubliners who have seen so much change already. They all remember two way traffic on Grafton St. Then one way each way then none - by far the best option!!
• Killing access for the occasional visitors to the city, creating a dead space with only social problems just like the boardwalk along the Quays
• Risk that pedestrian movements will not be catered for properly. Risk that cyclists and pedestrians will be put in conflict with each other.

Typical reasons – More greenery
• It would give a bit of colourful attraction to the area • More trees and flowers would enhance the area
• The green spaces are very important for people to walk around and interact
• Always good to have more greenery when the space is in the heart of the city, with
people and vehicles producing CO2. • Good for the environment
• It would soften the look of the area and help the environment. Enhance the general
psychological outlook and possible positive effects on tourism. • There is hardly any greenery at present. Trees help to keep the air fresh and have a
calming effect on people. • It breaks the hard landscape

Typical Reasons – Happy with greenery as it is
• I like the amount of trees that are here
• Too much greenery would crowd the area
• It is a city centre space so while some greenery is important, it is not a park.
• It's grand. Lots of historical buildings, don't need to hide them with trees! • Those trees have great character, leave them alone
• College Green is a commercial area not a garden. I am totally in favour of more
greenery in the City in the appropriate areas.
• I don’t want to see it too over populated with trees the present amount of trees is acceptable

Typical Reasons – Less greenery than currently
• It blocks the view of the beautiful buildings.
• The existing trees are too big now. Sadly they need to go.
• The space should highlight the architectural quality of the surrounding buildings. Some greenery is good but this is not a green space.
• Removing the large oversized trees will open up the square. Making it feel bigger
and allowing the architecture to be admired. • The existing trees only serve to obscure what buildings and features that already
exist
• The present level of tree cover in the area limits the historic views and the appreciation of the historic and spatial aspects of the space – the space needs to be opened up and different lower forms of planting considered

Public Seating – Typical Reasons Strongly in Favour • Seating would be a good idea especially for the elderly shoppers and tourists
• Handy to have a nice spot to sit down
• This is absolutely necessary if College Green is to become a place that people
come to spend time.
• Needs to be a place that is about taking a break, sitting down and taking in the sights and music of the city.
• Public spaces should be designed for all especially elderly who need places like
this to sit. Worrying that undesirable antisocial behaviour would occur is not a valid reason.
• If you want people to linger, meet... there should be benches
• Public seating will help College Green become a destination

Public Seating – Typical Reasons in Favour with Reservations
• Sometimes public seating can lead to anti social behaviour encouraging drug dealing
• Some seating but not too cluttered
• Public seating is a great idea if it is managed, look at the board walk on the Liffey - who has this ruined? Beggars and drug dealers and users.
• If placed wrongly, public seats tend to block pedestrian flow and can also be a source of vandalism.
• Security risk to individual and restricts people movement
• It needs to not compromise the space.

Public Seating – Typical Reasons Against
• There are lots of cafes along the streets for seating. It would crowd the area too much
• If there was more seating, more people hanging around looking for change (money) etc. anti social behaviour
• Unless the area is policed properly College Green is going to end up being taken over by drunks and drug users.
• Its such a busy walking area for people and transport that it will clutter the area.
• Unless managed 24/7 It only creates a space for anti social behaviour • Why do you need public seating... Stephen's Green is not far
