invest in a small pilot to test some ideas with nine young Londoners from disadvantaged inner city communities. The programme unearthed some talented young people that have taken this opportunity to further develop their personal and professional skills. I was so inspired by this group and knew this was going to be the way I could give back. Following this pilot, I was so pleased that the EBM Charitable Trust agreed to fund the programme working with another seven incredible young people in London. Similar to London, in 2018 I launched a pilot in Cape Town South Africa and intend on fundraising to further develop Team Habana South Africa.

Team Habana has proven that the combination of skills development, mentoring, a structured curriculum and the guidance of role models, can help young people become successful leaders in their communities, inspiring the next generation. This report shows the journey of seven young leaders that I am proud to know and to have on my team. Once a young leader joins Team Habana they become part of an alumni gaining their own unique Team Habana number no other will have just like my very own Springbok number (766).

Including the pilot in London we now have 16 Team Habana graduates and I’m even more excited about what they are going to do next.

I’d like to thank the EBM Charitable Trust for investing in Team Habana young leaders and helping to change their lives to help them make a positive impact.

Executive summary I established the Bryan Habana Foundation in 2015 aiming to channel the values and experiences I learned through playing professional rugby to inspire the next generation of young leaders. For this reason, the concept of Team Habana was developed.

Team Habana is a programme for aspiring young leaders aged 16 – 21 in deprived communities in need of an opportunity to help them discover their leadership potential through the power of rugby. These young people are provided with a one-year extraordinary experience of training, mentoring and skills development and return to their communities equipped to act as a beacon of hope to other young people by sharing their knowledge and experiences of Team Habana.

In 2016 I met The Change Foundation and they helped me design the Team Habana curriculum and I decided to

About Team Habana Team Habana is an experiential learning programme designed to develop young people’s confidence and competence in a range of leadership behaviours for them to fully discover their leadership potential. Team Habana is structured and delivered over one year in the following phases:

1. Recruitment – through a referral and application process young people are identified by local schools and community groups. This includes submission of a short video about why they would like to join the programme, an interview and a pre course survey to accurately assess their leadership needs to maximise the benefits of the programme.

2. Training – young people are provided with a one week residential with workshops, personal development planning, rugby activities and masterclasses from Bryan Habana. Young people learn about growth mind-set, conflict resolution, problem solving, project management, pitching and networking skills and teamwork in order to assess and build their leadership potential.

3. Mentoring – young people are provided with one to one mentoring sessions with the Team Habana Coach Mentor and regular video messages from Bryan Habana to help continue their leadership journey working towards short, medium and long term personal leadership targets.

4. Give back – young people deliver 100 hours of ‘give back’ in their communities in the following ways:

• Social action – young people’s give back is focussed on a campaign in their local community.

• Community action – young people’s give back is focussed on improving their community by working with residents.

• Youth action – young people’s give back is focused on empowering other young people in the community through sport.

5. Scholarship for life – all Team Habana graduates are provided with the following:

• Reference letter from Bryan Habana

• Opportunities to peer mentor Team Habana recruits

• Regular updates through the Team Habana blog

• Access to unique opportunities through the Bryan Habana Foundation network

• Each Team Habana young leader is given a unique number just as each international springbok, which is a representative symbol of their participation and contribution to Team Habana.

The Team Habana Code The Team Habana curriculum is based around Bryan Habana’s values of leadership, this is known as the ‘Team Habana code’. Bryan developed this code from his encounters with his own role models, his family and what it means to play for the Springboks. This code aims to inspire the Team Habana young leaders to find their own examples of these values and support them to develop their own leadership style through their experiences.

The Team Habana code is based on the following values:

WILLINGNESS

RESPECT

RESPONSIBILITY

HUMILITY

INTEGRITY

The curriculum uses these values to form planned learning through rugby.

Recruitment

Young people were selected for the Team Habana London programme through a rigorous selection process. Through The Change Foundation’s network of referral partners such as QPR football club, Crystal Palace Football Foundation, RFU, Let me play and a wide variety of schools, colleges and local council youth services teams, young people were referred to Team Habana through completion of a registration form.

From here, young people were invited to attend a selection day where they completed a number of written and practical tasks set to challenge their leadership skills. After this, they met one to one with the Team Habana Coach Mentor as a further screening exercise. The criteria the young people are selected against are threefold:

1. Attitude – the level of their motivation to develop their leadership potential.

2. Knowledge – the understanding of how they wish to use their leadership potential to help others.

3. Skills – the level of leadership skills demonstrated as a baseline for development.

Young people were then asked to complete a short video explaining why they wanted to be a part of Team Habana along with how they want to give back to their community.

Once passing the selection process, young people were formally invited onto the Team Habana programme by receiving an official offer letter from Bryan Habana.

Training Young people were provided with an in-depth one week residential with workshops, personal development planning and a leadership master class from Bryan Habana. The residential is broken down into 6 sessions designed to unlock the young person’s leadership potential and promote positive behaviours. The six sessions that were delivered were:

Session 1Introduction to Team HabanaYoung people learn what it means to be a part of Team Habana as well as learning the Team Habana code.

Session 2The apprenticeYoung people take part in a unique problem solving and team work task designed to test and develop their leadership skills.

Session 3The art of leadershipYoung people learn about different leadership theories as well as discover what type of leader they are.

Session 4Harnessing you’re power from withinYoung people discover different techniques for channelling positive energies and motivations to develop resilience and determination.

Session 5Discover your inner coaching character Young people learn how to discover and develop their inner coaching character by identifying their strengths as well as their areas to improve.

Session 6Personal development and growthYoung people initiate personal development plans one to one with Team Habana Coach Mentors. They also work on developing their own community giveback development plans.

This year we held our residential at the Twickenham Stoop, home of Harlequins RFU, friend and supporter of Team Habana London. The residential was a resounding success in that all the young people reported how inspired and motivated the residential left them feeling. We also witnessed a marked improvement in their understanding of what true leadership means and the skills and traits a leader should possess. From our learning’s during this residential, we will refine our content

and aim to deliver an even more powerful and impactful residential for our year three intake.

Young people also attended additional training opportunities and workshops in order to aid their professional and personal development. These included career development sessions with senior managers and directors of City and Guilds Group who work with education providers, employers and governments in over 100 countries across the world to help people, businesses and economies grow by shaping skills systems and supporting skills development. They also attended disability inclusion training and sport for development sector specific workshops at The Change Foundation.

Mentoring Young people were provided with one to one mentoring sessions with the Team Habana Coach Mentor and regular video messages from Bryan Habana to help continue their leadership journey working towards short, medium and long term personal leadership goals. These mentoring sessions are held at locations within each young person’s local community and last for approximately 1 hour. During these sessions, the following themes are covered on a weekly basis:

• Leadership vs Management

• Developing your own leadership potential

• Effective decision making

• Motivating yourself and others

• Respect, discipline and resilience

• Personal development and reflection

• Coaching fundamentals

It is through mentoring that we are able to really shape and develop positive behaviours and personal development. We are able to nurture and grow each young person’s leadership potential, increase self-confidence, self-awareness and self-worth. Please see below the outline of what forms the basis of 1 to 1 mentoring sessions:

KPI’s This year we trained seven young leaders all of whom are from marginalised communities within inner city London. The day before the residential we unfortunately had two young people drop out to anxiety and personal issues but we already had suitable and able reserves lined up. Community volunteering was conducted within the London boroughs of Croydon, Sutton, Lambeth, Southwark and Hammersmith and Fulham. Young people volunteered on a range of different projects being delivered within their local community to young people with a disability, young people living within areas of deprivation and high anti-social behaviour and girls and young woman sporting inclusion initiatives.

Two of the cohort have designed a three-month behavioural change, engagement and leadership programme that uses rugby to help support younger students from within their old school who have a history of behavioural issues. This has been fully endorsed by the school and is being supported by The Change Foundation. Another two of the group have completed enough volunteering and coaching hours to pass their FA level 1 coaching badge and have now gone on to secure part time coaching roles.

Young leaders volunteered at community sports festivals for young people from within their local community including a specialist disability festival for young people with a range of complex learning and physical disabilities. They each demonstrated incredible emotional intelligence, maturity as well as showcasing their leadership skills.

Leadership quote

“Great leaders don’t tell you what to do, they show you how it’s done” - Unknown

BackgroundBorn and bred on a tough housing estate in south London which is notorious for gang activity and conflict, Abel soon found himself caught up in the gang world due to the well-known profile of his cousins within those circles. At home, things were not easy. His dad was quite abusive which resulted in Abel and his brother throwing their Dad out of their home to protect their mother. Abel would often get into trouble at school which eventually led to him being kicked out of mainstream school where he ended up in a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU). A victim of knife crime, Abel himself has been stabbed but was lucky to get away with minor wounds. Whilst he was in the PRU he found rugby and his talent became apparent and was scouted by London Broncos and Harlequins Academy. Rugby provided Abel with the platform to flourish.

JourneyDue to his unsettled home life, Abel’s educational attendance rate was very poor, with his 6th form college threatening to kick him out. Since joining Team Habana, Abel’s attendance rate went up to 89% and he now realises the importance of completing his education. His rugby continues to flourish and he has recently represented Kent under 18’s as well as continuing to play for London Broncos. Abel cites that meeting Bryan was ‘literally the best thing that’s ever happened to me’ and says that the leadership residential was a real turning point for him. He is delivering a Team Habana rugby leadership programme to younger students that need further support. Abel’s give back hours were completed on The Change Foundation’s disability programmes. He has a family member with a disability so this is something that is close to his heart. Abel has grown in confidence and maturity, so much so that he has also obtained his first part time job.

Leadership quote

“The beautiful thing about life is every morning you get the chance to create a better day than the last. Focus on the now, not the yesterday” – Reyta Biddy

BackgroundSophie is a qualified rugby coach and currently coach’s junior girl’s teams at her rugby club. She is a massive promoter of not only the game of rugby and the life skills you can learn from it. She was selected to attend a specialist RFU development course to increase her club development knowledge. Sophie has strong leadership potential but lacks the confidence in herself. This is something she wants to develop along with her public speaking skills. Sophie truly believes in the power of sport to help develop life skills and wants to give back to her community a platform for young woman with a disability to enjoy the game of rugby.

JourneySophie is incredibly mature and naturally has great interpersonal skills, however, she lacks self-confidence and belief in her own ability. She has struggled academically and before joining Team Habana, felt directionless and was worried about her future. Since this point, she has continued to grow in confidence and was encouraged to apply for university. Working with her Team Habana Coach Mentor, she submitted her UCAS statement and was offered a place by two universities. She has decided to defer her place for a year so that she can gain work experience which will complement her study. Sophie is now in full time employment and continues to volunteer coach a girl’s rugby team every week. She is currently developing her own rugby-based fitness class for older woman looking to get into the sport to create friendship groups as well as for general fitness. Sophie’s give back hours were spent giving time at her rugby club (Warlingham), supporting with the delivery of female rugby. She has taken a particular interest in recruiting girls and young woman to the game who haven’t been exposed to it before. This is because she has seen first-hand the benefits the sport of rugby can provide someone who has never played the game before. Sophie is a brilliant young woman with a bright future ahead of her.

Leadership quote

“True leaders don’t create followers; they create more leaders” – Tom Peters

Background Caitlin is a keen footballer who became involved in the sport after joining a community programme. Living in an area known for high knife crime it is often easy for young woman to get caught up in the cycle girls associated to gangs, but Caitlin has managed to stay away from this by getting involved in as many positive sporting activities as possible. Her aspirations are to play professional football and be a positive influence and role model for her younger sister. Caitlin lacks self-confidence and wants to develop this so that she can take more of a leadership role within both football but also within her community.

JourneyCaitlin came to Team Habana as a keen sports woman who struggled with her self-esteem. She has had problems with knowing how to deal with conflict and has at times got herself into a few situations which have caused her difficulties. Since joining Team Habana and through the learning’s she took from the residential along with regular contact and advice from her Coach Mentor, Caitlin has now learned how to deal with conflict and how to navigate difficult situations through rationalisation. She cites that over the residential she learned a lot about herself and left feeling incredibly motivated. Since then, she has been offered a contract to play football for Tottenham Hotspur FC which is a huge achievement. Particularly as previously she had a lot of self-doubt about pursuing her football career. Caitlin’s give back hours have been spent volunteering with QPR’s community football programme and she has taken on active mentoring roles with younger participants. This was because she has come through this programme and it is attended by lots of young people from her area. Coaching staff have been full of praises about the positive impact Caitlin has made and the enthusiasm she has projected onto the young people attending the programme.

Background Tianna attends the same school whereby the head teacher was tragically murdered at the school gates defending a pupil from a rival gang. The area Tianna is from has been caught up in a violent turf war for some time and many young people have got caught up within the conflict. As a result of this Tianna wants to give back on a programme local to where she lives that uses football and role models to steer young people away from negative behaviours.

JourneySince joining Team Habana Tianna has increased her aspirations for the future and realised that she has a lot of potential, not only within the classroom but also the impact that she can make within her community by using the sport she loves as a tool for social change. She has spent her give back hours volunteering with QPR FC’s community football programme and has been coaching young people from within her community every week. This was because she has come through this programme and it is attended by lots of young people from her area. She has really enjoyed taking of a mentor role and being a role model to other young woman. Tariq is a larger than life character who uses his natural charisma to positively affect those around him. A promising rugby player, he is looking to pursue a career in rugby coaching and youth work. ‘Taz’ as he is known to his friends wants to develop a programme in schools that uses rugby to teach leadership skills.

Tariq was struggling with direction prior to joining Team Habana, had low aspirations and confidence in his own ability. Since joining the programme and through regular contact with his Coach Mentor, Tariq has grown in confidence and has benefited from having more positive influences in his life. He had a successful year at college and has demonstrated wonderful potential as a community sports coach and youth worker through his volunteering on a range of programmes. Tariq has spent his give back hours volunteering at The Change Foundation on disability programmes as well as at a disability summer camp. BackgroundRojhat is a competitive Muay-Thai boxer and rugby player. Martial arts and rugby have kept him away from criminal activity and he knows the importance of working hard at college to provide him with the best foundations for moving forward. Rojhat is an extremely talented rugby player and wants to use rugby to inspire young people involved in gangs to think different about their futures and improve their decision making skills. He has strong leadership potential as he has a natural presence that people gravitate towards.

Journey Rojhat is a very popular member of the Team Habana cohort. Since joining Team Habana he has stayed on track academically and enjoyed good grades at the end of the academic year. The programme has given him great motivation to really make something out of his sport. He has been introduced to GB boxing coaches connected to Team Habana and continues to train exceptionally hard. Rojhat has spent his give back hour volunteering to coach younger rugby players at his school (Langley). He chose to do this because he is looking to develop his coaching skills further and one day complete his coaching badges so he can deliver a community based rugby programme in areas where rugby traditionally isn’t played. Rojhat has helped to mentor younger players at his club, specifically those in need of a role model. Rojhat is motivated to work very hard throughout this academic year so that he gets the grades required to fulfil his aspiration of going to university.

In year two there has been a small overspend of £60. This is largely because of the expenditure on travel expenses for the Team Habana Coach Mentor due to meeting with Team Habana Leaders in smaller groups rather than together as one group at The Change Foundation Headquarters. Team Habana leaders have a number of commitments and arranging their schedule together can often be difficult thus breaking into smaller groups. We recommend budgeting £500 for this in next year’s budget.

Taking on board our learning’s from year one, we approached year two with optimism. As a result, we were able to support some fantastic young leaders on their individual journeys. Some of the learning’s are highlighted below:

Age range

Learning from our experiences last year, this year we aimed to recruit a cohort currently within their last year at sixth form or college. This is well known as a stressful time for young people, especially with those who unfortunately don’t have too many mentors or people who they can turn to in their life. With exams looming which could shape their future educational plans and job aspirations, stress, anxiety and self-doubt all come into play and can have detrimental effects on a young person’s mental health. By having a steady, reliable constant in their lives, they have someone to confide in and support them through this testing period of time. This was evident during pinch points in the academic year and we provided an additional layer of support to help with educational engagement as well as support the overall wellbeing of the young person.

It is also at this age whereby they are seen as old enough within their local community to act as responsible role models and able to implement their leadership skills. We will continue to keep our age range from 16-21 but we are aware that the chances of a 21-year-old completing all phases of the programme are relatively slim due to the need to work full time which can mean that they simply don’t have enough time or organisational capacity to complete their give back hours. If this situation occurs we will adapt elements of the programme to support them in another way, such as more mentoring time or one-day volunteering opportunities.

Residential content

The content delivered on the residential was very well received and it was excellent to witness the group take away the learning’s and implement them within their own lives. For next year, we have formed a Team Habana task group made up of four Team Habana graduates and the Team Habana Programme Manager. Together, they will recommend new material, sessions and workshops to be delivered in year three based on their own experiences. The idea that Team Habana continuously looks to evolve and take on recommendations and ideas from its alumni is an important part of the programme’s success and sustainability.

Residential venue

Twickenham stoop once again provided to be an excellent place to deliver our residential. Harlequins RFC have continued to be good friends and supporters of Team Habana and we will also be delivering at this venue again in year three. Learning from last year, we moved our accommodation slightly closer to the ground this year. Located right next to Twickenham train station, our accommodation was ideally located. We shall repeat this next year. We hired an indoor sports hall for the coaching clinic delivered by The Change Foundation expert coach trainer Alex Bassan. Due to the temperature during December, this was wise and also provided a nice environment for our young leaders to operate in. Richmond College will continue to support our year three residential by providing discounted use of their state of the art sports hall facilities.

Team Habana graduates

We now have 16 Team Habana graduates and can see that their leadership journeys have only just begun. For this reason, our main recommendation for the year ahead to develop a new layer to the programme creating opportunities for graduates to exercise their leadership capabilities through the power of rugby.

Summary

The programme once again was a brilliant success as we were able to train, mentor and support some incredible young leaders who will continue to have a strong positive impact on those around them including family members, friends, team mates, members of the public and within their communities in general. Two of the cohort have expressed a desire for a career within the sport for social change space and The Change Foundation will look to support them with this aspiration once they complete education. Three of year one’s cohort now work full time for The Change Foundation and have embarked on three pieces of overseas development work between them. Once completing their studies, we aim to support others

into employment based on their willingness and attitude.

As previously mentioned, we will invite members from year two to support with the delivery of year three’s residential. They have already expressed great enthusiasm for this and have even started to plan the content that they would like to deliver. The Team Habana alumni network

continues to grow and their eagerness to stay connected is not only incredibly important for the legacy of the programme, but also evident that we are able to develop strong relationships with each young leader. We now have sixteen trained leaders in London and we look forward to them assisting a further seven young leaders for Team Habana in year three.

Abel Paintsil – Team Habana 2018 graduate
