Make-a-Monster

Group size: Any numberTime: 30 minutes or moreEquipment needed: magazines, flipchart paper,scissors, glue, pens

Divide the group into teams. Probably no more than 4/5 per teamworks best. Instruct the teams to make a picture of a monster usingthe materials provided. Allow 15 minutes and ask the teams to givethe monster a name and think about its characteristics; how it lives;where it lives; what is it’s prey; how does it kill etc. After 15 minutesask the teams to come back together to present their monsters and itscharacteristics.

Halloween Story

Group size: Any numberTime: 30 minutes or moreEquipment needed: paper and pens

Divide the group into teams of 4/5. Read out the beginning of a ghostor horror story to each team and ask the teams to finish the story.Make sure your story is a descriptive as possible and has severalcharacters. The story should be around 5 minutes in total including thestart. Give the teams around 20 minutes to discuss, formulate andwrite the story. Ask the teams to come together and share theirstories. No doubt the stories will be completely different.



Scarecrow –ho-ho!

Group size: Any numberTime: 30 minutes or moreEquipment needed: Brief – see below and the followingequipment per scarecrow:

1 – stake about 2m long (6ft)1 – stake about 1m long (3ft)1 – stake about 30cm long (12 inches)Old Clothes (shirt or jumper, trousers, hat)An old pair of tightsSome straw or hayStringGlue and bits of material for eyes, nose and mouth

Split the group into teams of 5/6 and give each a set of the scarecrowequipment and brief below. Allow 30 minutes for each team to maketheir scarecrows. Tell them you want them to be a scary as possible.Judge according to criteria in brief and award prize to winning team!



VARIATION

Try a witch or wizard theme for your scarecrow



Scarecrow Brief:

Recent attacks by flocks of birds have devastated the cornfieldsat Shingles Farm.

Your task therefore is to construct a scarecrow to protect thecrops.

You have 30 minutes in which to construct your scarecrowusing only the materials provided.

An information sheet called “How to Make a Scarecrow” isavailable on request. You can use this method or make yourown.

All scarecrows will be judged on the following categories:

Durability: Scarecrow doesn’t lose his nerve (or his stuffing)when given a shake.

Scariness: Terrifying to crows. Your scarecrow will have thebirds ordering take-away rather then venture near yourcreation.

Creativity: Give the crows (and the judges) something they’venot seen before.

At the end of the 30 minutes, one team will be awarded thewinner



How to Make a Scarecrow

Here is a list of what you will need:

1 – stake about 2m long (6ft)1 – stake about 1m long (3ft)

1 – stake about 30cm long (12 inches)Old Clothes (shirt or jumper, trousers, hat)

An old pair of tightsSome straw or hay

String

How to make your scarecrow:

First of all tie the 1m stake to the 2m stake, about15cm from one end, in a cross shape and then tie theother stake in the same way about half way down.This is the frame for your scarecrow.

You are now ready to make a head. Cut one leg fromthe tights and fill with some straw. Push the strawfirmly to the end and make it into a ball shape. Tiea piece of string around the tights to stop thestraw falling out.

Now tie the ball shape to the top of the frame.You can now dress your scarecrow by placing the shirt onthe top crossbar and the trousers on the smaller bar.

Push straw or hay inside the clothes tofill them out and place the hat on his head. If you want youcan push some straw under the hat and leave it dangling outto look like hair.



Guess the Innards

Group size: Any numberTime: 30 minutes or moreEquipment needed: Food that could resembleinnards, blindfolds, pen and paper

Put food into bowls. Suggest cooked spaghetti for intestines;grapes or olives for eyes; mashed potatoes for brains,;jelly babies forlips; mashed cauliflour, cooked carrots, baked beans etc.

Divide the group into teams. Probably no more than 5/6 per teamworks best and have them sit in a small circle away from other teams.Give each person a blindfold and instruct them to put them on. Providepen and paper (one person will be writing the answers blindfolded!!).

Tell the story of how old Joe Bloggs was found drowned and pulled outof the river. He was taken to the morgue and an autopsy was carriedout. When the body was opened they found all manner of horriblethings. When his intestines fall out – at this point pass around the coldspaghetti bowl and ask the group to feel the contents and write downwhat item of food they think it is (NB if you have only one team thenyou need not get them to write it down) Continue with the storymaking it elaborate and as gory as you like. Each time you takesomething out of the body pass around the bowl of food and get theteam to guess the food by feeling with their hands. Use yourimagination with the food – use cold pasta covered in oil; mashedcauliflour; carrots for bones; coffee beans or popcorn kernals forteeth; etc.

Team with the most correct answers wins.

If you don’t want to use food you could have anything fall out of thebody – plastic toy, model car and the group just have to guess byfeeling the object.



Halloween Howler – A Night Walk

Group size: Works best with a small teamTime: 1 or 2 hoursEquipment needed: Flashlights, prepared mapsections and a “coffin” or treasure box filledwith goodies.

Take your team on a night walk in the dark, armed with flashlights(torches) to discover the treasure box (coffin)

Draw up a map of your local grounds or search area – this could be thegrounds of a park or big garden – suggest you keep to a small, safearea. Draw a route on the map using red ink (blood) clearly markingthe START and COFFIN at the end. Cut the map into about 5 or 6sections. Each section should also have an x marked on it where thegroup will find the next section of the map. Make the X in an obviousspot like the foot of a tree or gate. Laminate each section of the map.There needs to be enough detail on the map for people to follow andyou should be willing to give clues if your map is not up to the job!!

Prepare the nightwalk by putting the map sections out into their placeseg. under the tree, by the gate etc. Make sure they cannot blow awayor be picked –up by anyone if in a public area. You could staple themap sections to trees, gateposts etc. but make sure you pick them upafterwards. Suggest you also number the map sections to avoidconfusion if other map sections are found by mistake. Place the“coffin” at the end. This takes the place of the traditional treasure box.This could be a large box with a cross marked on it. Inside the box youcould place lots of horrible things like plastic skulls, spiders, rats etc.as well as a few prizes – chocolates etc. Make sure the box is wellhidden to avoid finding it before the final section.

Take your team to the start and give them the first section of the map.Tell them their challenge is to find the “COFFIN” by following the redtrail.

I would suggest you accompany the group to avoid them getting lostTo make things a bit more fun you could hang a white sheet in a treefor a ghost effect or place a few challenges along the way and rewardsuccess with the portion of the map.



Mummy Wrap and Race

Group size: AnyTime: 10-15 minutesEquipment needed: A toilet roll for each team

Arrange into small teams of 2 to 3.If you are going to have a “Mummy Race” after the wrapping it isuseful to do this game by the start line.Give each small team a toilet roll and ask them to choose the“mummy”. The other 2 people start to wrap the mummy as best theycan in the given time. Allow about 5 – 10 minutes to do this.You can award a prize to the best dressed mummyFor the Mummy Race get participants to line up on the starting line.Mummy’s race to the end trying to keep as much of the toilet paperwrapping in place.Award a prize to the first past the post and a prize for the most in tactmummy to finish.

Pumpkin Bowling

Group size: AnyTime: anyEquipment needed: 3 small pumpkins, 30 one-or two-liter clear soda bottles, 1 can of whitespray paint, 1 black permanent marker, a bagof gravel, sand, or pebbles.

In advance: spray paint the soda bottles and then when dry,draw scary faces on them. Fill each bottle with a small amount of thegravel, sand, or pebbles so they don’t blow over. Organize the bottlesin a bowling pin formation. Set a small pumpkin by each lane to be theball.

How to play: Split the party-goers into even groups and let themroll! Keep score just like bowling. Give special themed prizes to thewinners.



Killer

Equipment needed: pen and paper, containerGroup size: up to 12/15 per teamTime: 15 to 20 minutes depending on groupsize

Preparation – you will need a raffle ticket size piece of paper perperson. On one ticket write the word MURDERER and on anotherwrite DETECTIVE. Leave all the others blank. Fold all tickets to samesize and place in the container.

Get everyone to sit in a circle and pass the container around to geteveryone to draw a ticket. Once everyone has viewed their ticket insecret, they should replace the tickets in the container. Ask for theDETECTIVE to take their place in the middle of the circle.

The idea is for the detective to identify the murderer before the last 3people remain in the circle. If the murderer is discovered before thelast 3 people remain in the circle the DETECTIVE is the winner. If notthe MURDERER is the winner. The DETECTIVE has only 1 guess atnaming the MURDERER

Explain that the MURDERER will kill people by winking at them.Obviously they need to do it when the murderer is not looking.Everyone but the detective has to remain silent unless they are winkedat and die in the most hideous circumstances with screams and drop tothe floor.

It’s a great game – we played this with friends and their family ofyoung children – now 8/9 years later every time we see them theyrequest we play this game.

Musical Chairs Halloween Style

Equipment needed: one less chair for eachperson playing; Halloween music and CD playerGroup size: any



Time: around 30 seconds per player

How to play: It’s like musical chairs, but using Halloween-relatedtunes. People circulate around the chairs as the music plays, and whenthe music stops, they scramble for a seat. Who ever isn’t sitting in achair is out. Keep playing until there’s a winner. (If you need helpdeciding on Halloween songs, we have a list to get you started.)

Digging for Worms Race

Equipment needed: Bag of gummy worms andspiders, containers of whipped cream.Group size: 6 -12Timing: allow around 1 minute per person

Play in teams just like apple bobbing except you use whipped creamin bowls and hide gummy worms or spiders within!

In teams, guests place their hands place their hands behind theirbacks and dive face first into the whip cream, grabbing the worms withtheir teeth. When the first person in the team finds a worm the secondperson has a go. First team to find all the worms wins. Have papertowels on hand – this is a very messy game.

To make it even messier and harder try blindfolding players!

Classic Apple Bobbing

Fill a bucket with water and apples. Guests queue up and with handsbehind their backs, have a go at catching an apple with only theirteeth. It’s harder than you think!

Pass the Pumpkin!

Everyone sits in a circle. The music plays and the pumpkin is passedaround. When the music stops the person holding the pumpkin is out!



Pumpkin Boules

1 large pumpkin for the JACK2 small pumpkins per person

Find a nice flat area and put the large pumpkin around 60 to 70 feetaway from the bowling line.

Give each player two small pumpkins. Each takes a turn at rolling theirfirst pumpkin toward the bigger pumpkin. When everyone has had ago everyone rolls for a second time. The pumpkin nearest the JACK(large pumpkin) wins.

Pumpkin Hunt

Equipment needed: several pumpkins andtreasure – toys, gifts, candies etc.Group size: anyTiming: 10 minutes

Hollow out pumpkins and insert treasure inside. Hide the pumpkins inthe garden or elsewhere. Hardest to find pumpkins contain thegreatest amount of treasure.

Ghost Hunt

Equipment needed: white sheet, prizesGroup size: anyTiming: 10 – 20 minutes

Instead of the traditional “Hide and Seek” dress one child up as theghost in a white sheet with cut out eyes. The ghost hides, first child tosee or touch the ghost wins a prize.



Pumpkin Toss

Equipment needed: one small pumpkin percoupleTiming: 10 minutesGroup size: any

Remove stems of small pumpkins and ask children to pair up. Ask thechildren to form 2 lines facing their partner about 2 feet apart. Givethe pumpkin to the children standing in one of the lines. When you say“go” ask them to throw (gently) the pumpkin to their partner. Thereshould be plenty of space between pairs.

The first time round everyone should be successful as they arestanding very close. When everyone has finished throwing ask them totake one step back and repeat the process.

Keep taking further steps backwards. If anyone drops the pumpkin thepair drops out of the game.

The last remaining pair are the winners

CAUTION: only play this with mature groups!

Decorate your own Halloween food and cocktails – “BloodyMary’s” for adults. Kids can make their own cocktails usingtomato juice and orange juice. Supply chocolate cupcakes todecorate with chocolate icing, hundreds and thousands, M&Msetc. Make scary pizza faces too!

Face painting – get in the mood! And of course – the full fancy dress!
