The Methodist Church in Kenya (MCK) was founded in 1862 by a

group of missionaries sent by the United Methodist Free Churches

of Britain. Their first Mission Station at Ribe, north of Mombasa

began the spread and expansion to other parts of the country. On

January 7, 1967, the MCK became autonomous from the British

Methodist Church. From those humble beginnings at the coast,

MCK is now spread across the country.

Under the Jacaranda Trees

The hospital is buzzing with activity as people walk in and out under the Jacaranda trees which line the main drive

into Maua Methodist Hospital. You cannot enter or walk to the wards without passing under these stately trees.

Every time I walk down the road, there are more blue flowers on the ground to welcome everyone.

The Government nurse and doctor strikes finally ended late 2017. After months of clocking in extra hours,

increased numbers of surgeries, many babies delivered and wards that were overflowing, MMH is beginning to get

back to normal. Our nurses and doctors worked long shifts to keep up with the demand. The normal count of

patients more than doubled for months from 120 to 290 and more. Mission hospitals all over Kenya carried the

load for the Government hospitals and clinics that are shut down. The impact is still being felt financially as the

hospital is discharging the last of these patients.

Despite all the extra work, the new Comprehensive Care Clinic (CCC) is near completion. This has been a huge

project, started in February 2017, with multiple buildings under reconstruction, and new construction adding even

more office and examination space. As these buildings are ready to occupy, Palliative Care will move into their new

quarters.

The second floor of the Goede wing is nearly ready for the Administrative Block to occupy. Once the Admin

offices move, the remodeling of the vacated Administrative Block (second floor of Out-Patient) will begin for the

improved laboratory space. The staff flats were completed and now occupied. The empty office space behind the

Chapel has been converted into another Guest House and is nearing completion. Progress depends on one project

being completed and offices moved, before the next phase can begin. As donations arrive and our patient census

gets back to normal, then additional wards will be remodeled.

All of this has been on-going while we were in a country-wide drought and through two Presidential elections. The

hospital has remained open, working and caring for all who need medical help. We appreciate your prayers and your

kindness in taking time to donate funds, supplies, your time and talents.

Now with a new year stretching out ahead of us, we anticipate great things for MMH. New doctors are visiting,

teams are already serving at the hospital, and the value of our donors is ever present. New volunteers and teams

means more people will go back home and tell the story of MMH, the community outreach projects and the miracles

Famine Relief in Northern Kenya

The Conference office of the Methodist Church in Kenya contacted me in last April, requesting help in funding

famine relief. I sent out a quick newsletter and many of you responded graciously. Thank you so much.

Martin Gikunda, Humanitarian and Church Development, sent in a grant for UMCOR famine relief. With all these


donations, a tremendous effort has been put forth to purchase foods, transportation, organize at the local church

level and follow through on the delivery.

The drought is continuing and at its worst in Kenya’s Northern Frontier areas. Working directly with the local MCK

churches, Martin requested pastors to identify those who are most vulnerable: elderly, disabled and single

mothers with small children. Using these criteria, we served the people who desperately needed the food. Several

relief sites were identified and here are a few of the people served.

These pictures are of the Kangeta Circuit about 35 minutes north of Maua and around the Wamba area north of

Archer’s Post. People lined up for their portion of dried corn, beans, oil and a breakfast cereal mix called uji.

Nothing here was green except for the occasional acacia trees which are drought hardened. If you are interested

in the complete details of this response email me and I will send you the final report from the Conference office.

Mission Teams make a difference

Early in 2017, teams from Oregon and Central Texas plus the first Advance team of specialists arrived ready to

work in Kenya. These groups were followed over the summer months by Memorial Drive UMC, Houston; Clear Lake

UMC, Clearlake, TX; Servant of the Shepard, Oklahoma City; Lakewood UMC, Cypress, TX; Acton UMC, Central

TX.; and Christ UMC, Sugarland, TX. During this same time, a team from Colorado visited to dedicate 3 AIDS

homes they had sponsored. Plus, other visiting doctors, medical students, psychologists, nurses etc. make up the

on-stop volunteers who believe in the on-going work of Maua Methodist Hospital (MMH).


It is impossible to give the thanks needed to each volunteer who worked hard at all the projects assigned. There

were multiple act of Grace, Love and Understanding seen throughout. In 2017:

• 10 homes were built for AIDS orphans in the communities. Now these families are part of MMH and will

have access to medical services, school, health insurance plus a house and latrine.

• Five medical camps were held in outlying communities. The camps provide valuable screening for High Blood

Pressure, Diabetes and HIV, plus many other medical conditions. Teams help with testing for reading

glasses, demonstrations on dental health and checking vitals.

• 12 schools were dewormed. One World Futbols plus school supplies were donated.

• 100’s of baby caps and blankets were donated along with love and prayers to new mothers.

• Medical supplies, scrubs, office supplies, cards of appreciation and so many smiling faces were also donated.

• Teams counted medicines for the camps, marked hospital scrubs, sorted supplies, painted all 4 apartments

for new staff to occupy, repaired a gate at the mission house, participated in Chapel and daily devotions,

worked in the wards, surgery and presented important workshops requested by the staff.

this wonderful way to serve the Kenyans. As the Mission Coordinator,

Kathie will make all in-country reservations, assist you with your

planning and will host you while in Kenya. Making Maua home for half of

each year allows Kathie to give complete mission support to your team. Kathie’s Maua home

ADVANCE TEAM SERVES MAUA

For three weeks in February/March of 2017, five men served at Maua

Methodist Hospital as the first “specialty team”. Representing Texas,

Louisiana and California with expertise in water systems, sewer/plumbing,

computer and electrical systems, they evaluated multiple projects at MMH. By

interviewing all the department staff and going through all the buildings, they

prepared a 5-10-year plan for the hospital. It was an exciting time because of

ideas flowing, dreams captured and now a path to follow. From this planning

team, came the major construction projects we are seeing right now on the

compound. Using money that was already available for construction, the initial

phase is nearing completion. These men worked hard to give MMH a “Blue print” of priorities with a basic timeline

so all work will be toward the same objective. We wish to thank, Jon Hockenberry, Sheldon Haase, David Boyle,

Roger Ethridge and David Bruce, team leader, for an incredible job.

ONE WORLD PLAY CAMPAIGN A GREAT SUCCESS

The Community Health Campaign at One World Play made it possible to

purchase durable soccer balls for the children in the villages we serve. We

reached our goal of 100 balls by March of 2017 through gifts from

individuals, churches and teams. Multiple balls were distributed in 2017 to

about 14 schools, with many more schools waiting. Each team presents them

as part of their donation to the Principal and the children will be able to play

with them for years to come. THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING!

Already this year (2018) we have given over 14 balls to area schools and the

rest will be donated by the mission teams over the summer.

The 2017, 4th Annual Friends of Maua Hospital (FOMH) Conference, was held in Fort Worth last November. We had

a good turn out with support from all our mission teams. Dr. Salvador de la Torre (CEO) and Stanley Gitari (Mission

Coordinator and Community Health) represented the hospital. Bill Savuto, retired missionary to MMH, was also in

attendance. There were many presentations on changes and the vision of the hospital plus details of our

organization, FOMH. The break out groups were active and came back with some great ideas for future work and

investment into the hospital.

Work is being completed now on a new website for everyone to glean the most recent information about teams, how

to volunteer, how to donate, projects, technical programs and who to contact. The website should be ready for

business by the next newsletter.
