Fuel Cell System Manufactur- ing, LLC will operate within GM’s existing battery pack manufac- turing facility site in Brown- stown, south of Detroit, said GM spokesman Alan Adler. Mass production of fuel cell systems is expected to begin around 2020 and create nearly 100 new jobs. The companies are making equal investments total- ing $85 million in the joint ven- ture, Adler said. Honda and GM have been working together through a mas- ter collaboration agreement an- nounced in July 2013. It estab- lished the co-development arrangement for a next-genera- tion fuel cell system and hydro- gen storage technologies. The companies, Adler said, in- tegrated their development teams and shared hydrogen fuel cell intellectual property to cre- ate a more affordable commer- cial solution for fuel cell and hy- drogen storage systems. “Over the past three years, en- gineers from Honda and GM have been working as one team with each company providing know- how from its unique expertise to create a compact and low-cost next-gen fuel cell system,” said Toshiaki Mikoshiba, chief operat- ing officer of the North American Region for Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and president of Honda North America, Inc. “This foundation of outstanding teamwork will now take us to the stage of joint mass production of a fuel cell system that will help each company cre- ate new value for our customers in fuel cell vehicles of the future.” The Fuel Cell System Manufac- turing (FCSM) joint venture will be operated by a board of direc- tors consisting of three execu- tives from each company that will include a rotating chairper- son Adler said. The talk – A Deep Dive into the Chinese Automotive Market was given by Michael Dunne, au- thor of the book “American Wheels, Chinese Roads” was fol- lowed up by a question and an- swer session with Dunne, Jerry Xu, president of the Detroit Chi- nese Business Association; and Mary Buckzeiger, CEO of Sure So- lutions and Lucerne Internation- al. Dunne received his MBA from the university of Michigan and has spent considerable time in China and other Asian countries. He began by pointing out that the biggest mass migration of hu- man beings on any given year takes place in China, when peo- ple go to their home towns to cel- ebrate the Chinese New Year. He said they crowd train sta- tions and use sharp elbows to get space. “That’s what they do for fun on their vacations,” Dunne said. The lesson he learned was that when it come to business, the Chinese are even more serious. “They never give up,” Dunne said. was Mao and he preached inde-pendence. That kept China poor.But beginning in 1980, the eco-nomic policy became “take thebest from the rest of the world”and keep China in charge of itsown destiny. The result, Dunnesaid, was perhaps the greatesteconomic growth in history.Chinese development can be

broken down into three phases,Dunne said. The first phase wasbetween 1980 and 2000. Foreigncompanies had all the leveragebecause of a lack of automotivemanufacturing know-how in Chi-na. Companies set up shop andbuilt factories.But each factory was co-owned

by the foreign OEM and Chinesepartner.The second phase was be-

tween 2000 and 2010. The Chi-nese companies now began part-nering with multiple OEMs. Sothe company partnered withBuick also partnered with VW.The third phase started in 2010

and should end around 2020,Dunne said. China is now thelargest car market in the world,and we might see a number offoreign OEMs being invited tosell their half of the company totheir Chinese partners.One trend Dunne has noticed

is that Chinese companies aregetting big into high-end automo-tive technology. Firms haveopened up in Silicon Valley to de-velop the latest in EV and au-tonomous technology. A subver-sion of the notion that Chineseindustry is based on cheap man-ufacturing.Companies like Faraday have

entered into the total-EV marketand within two-and-a-half yearsproduced a vehicle designed torival Tesla, Dunne said.China is investing big in EV

technology for a couple of rea-sons, Dunne said. First that’s thefuture of the auto industry. Andsecond, the country has terribleemissions problems and buildingclean cars is one solution.While the country has become

the largest importer of oil fromthe Mideast, Dunne said Chinadoesn’t want to get bogged downin the political situation in thatpart of the world and it wants toavoid developing what it sees asAmerica’s addiction to Mideastoil. EV technology can help withthat problem as well.He also said he expects Chi-

nese imports to gradually enterthe U.S. market, and with compa-nies like LYNK & CO. to try theTesla direct sales method.And finally, Dunne said, he ex-

pects China to begin investing di-

rectly in the U.S., with money be-ing their ultimate weapon.“They will be investing money

in manufacturing and high-endautonomous vehicles,” Dunnesaid. “That’s the future I see andit should ultimately be good forthe United States. We have to becareful because the two proudcultures don’t always get along.But I believe they will bring mon-ey and build where they intendto sell.”Dunne then sat down with Xu

and Buchzeiger to answer ques-tions from people in the audi-ence.The first question was about

pressure to raise wages in Chi-nese manufacturing.Dunne said that in fact wages

have risen in the coastal cities,which has driven manufacturinginto China’s interior. The coastalcities are already beginning tosee a shift into a service econo-my.Buchzeiger agreed and added

that her firms have been in Chinafor 12 years and she’s seen a shiftfrom just manufacturing to moreof development of technology.The next question was

whether Chinese businesseswould invest in places like Michi-gan and create jobs, and whatcould prevent them from beingsuccessful.

Xu said that Dunne was rightwhen he talked about culturaldifferences. Businesses are al-ready here, but to succeed theymust tap local talent, people whoknow how things work here.All too often, Xu said, success-

ful Chinese businessmen comehere thinking they’re invincible,and they’re not.Things are done differently

here in the United States andthese real differences must betaken into account for any busi-ness plan to succeed.Another question dealt with

the recent change in the U.S.presidency. Xu said that thingsare always different when a newpresident takes over. Things usu-ally find an equilibrium after ayear.Dunne said, when asked, he

would tell Trump that the Chi-nese respect strength and thatany business arrangementsshould be built on the principleof reciprocity.Currently Chinese businesses

can operate in the U.S. on theirown, while American businesseshave to have Chinese partners tooperate in China. That shouldchange.Dunne would tell Trump that if

China wants to do business here,the rules will have to be the samefor everyone.

China’s Automotive Future is Developing High Tech Cars

kee, the brand’s volume leaderin January, were up 24 percentfor the month. Sales of theDodge Journey mid-sizecrossover were up 9 percent,while Fiat 500 sales grew 24 per-cent year over year.Sales of the new 2017 Chrysler

Pacifica were up in its firstmonth of year-over-year compar-isons, Kisiel said.Sales of the Ram pickup truck

increased 4 percent in January,compared with the same monthin 2016. In addition, the Ram Pro-Master van turned in a strong 43percent sales gain.So Ram Truck brand sales

were up 5 percent year over yearin January.Three Jeep brand models

posted sales increases in Janu-ary, led by the Jeep Renegadeand its 52 percent year-over-yearsales gain, Kisiel said.The Jeep Grand Cherokee –

the brand’s volume leader forthe month – recorded a 24 per-cent sales increase in January.The Jeep Wrangler logged a

January increase as well, Kisielsaid.The Fiat 500 recorded a 24 per-

cent sales increase in Januarycompared with the same montha year ago, Kisiel said.

bought the Chevrolet Engineer-ing Reseach Vehicle (CERV) 1 for$1.3 million at the Barrett-Jack-son Auto Auction in Scottsdale,Ariz.The car was listed as Lot #1390

on the auction’s Web site. Its de-scription called it one “of themost important pieces of Ameri-can automotive history, theChevrolet Engineering ResearchVehicle (CERV) 1 was developedbetween 1959 and 1960 by ZoraArkus-Duntov as a functionalmid-engine, open-wheel, single-seat prototype racing car.“It served as Duntov’s personal

Corvette engineering test bed; aplatform for engineers to devel-op and refine the Chevrolet body,chassis and suspension systems.Duntov drove the CERV 1 in de-mo laps at the U.S. Grand Prix in1960, but that is as far as its rac-ing aspirations went, due to theban on manufacturer-sponsoredracing at the time.“The car was designed by Lar-

On Jan. 26, General Motorslaunched a next generation info-tainment software developmentkit (NGI SDK) that allows soft-ware developers around theworld to develop and test in-ve-hicle applications for GM’s info-tainment systems.With the NGI SDK, apps can be

built to run directly on the vehi-cle using HTML5 and JavaScript.The development kit includesthe native Application ProgramInterfaces (APIs) that allow de-velopers access to nearly 400 ve-hicle data points _ more than anyother automaker, said GMspokeswoman Stephanie Rice.Those data points include:• Instrument panel measure-
