2001: A Space Odyssey routinely makes the list of greatest films

of all time.

But actor Keir Dullea, who played astronaut Tom Bowman in the film, said about 200 people walked out of its New York premiere.

“A lot of well-known film critics didn’t like it,” he said. But crowds of mostly young people stood in long lines to see the film. The 1968 film was so popular that it continued to play well into the following year. It was the last film to play at what was then the Loews 175th Street Theatre, better known today as the United Palace.

Fifty years later—almost to the day—2001 is playing again in the same location. Star Keir Dullea will be on hand to introduce the film and afterwards take questions from the audience.

The 82-year-old actor told The Manhattan Times that he admired director Stanley Kubrick ever since Paths of Glory with Kirk Douglas, which he saw while still in drama school.

Just before filming 2001, Dullea worked with director Otto Preminger on Bunny Lake is Missing with Laurence Olivier. “Preminger was a real bully. He screamed at people. Or he would humiliate you,” he said. “But working with Olivier was an honor, and I enjoyed that. But it was not an overall pleasant experience.”

“The profiles were such that what would make you and I go screaming out the door would just raise an eyebrow with [the astronauts],” recalled Dulles. “[Their] core beings were so steady, it’s part of the reason [Bowman and Poole] were chosen for the job.”

Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of New York announced that St. Charles Borromeo in Harlem will join Partnership Schools in September of 2019.

St. Charles Borromeo will be the Partnership’s fourth school in Harlem and its seventh in New York City.

The private Catholic school at 212 West 142nd Street serves children from pre-kindergarten through grade eight, and has a celebrated championship basketball team, the Lady Lions.

The school tweeted, “The St. Charles Community is thrilled to be joining the @Partnership_NYC network! We can’t wait to get to work improving and expanding our mission to provide excellent Catholic education to the students of Harlem.”

The announcement came Tues., April 2nd.Partnership Schools is an independent

501(c)3 nonprofit that currently oversees six other Catholic schools.

The organization focuses on historically disadvantaged communities in Harlem and the South Bronx.

Hiding in the margins of communities all over New

York are the most vulnerable members of our society; people of color, the homeless, children, survivors of intimate partner violence, and immigrants.

These intersectionalities are a marker for folks described as “members of the most disadvantaged communities – are greatest at risk if being uncounted”. It would take about $40 million dollars to get an accurate count of New Yorkers in the 2020 Census, of course that is with on-the-ground support from community-based organizations.

However, only half was allocated. Will $20 million be enough to ensure

that the $600 billion of federal government resources are distributed fairly in your community? No, it won’t be.

Consider: Misinformation about the census is spreading and so is distrust about the citizenship question on the census. Many members of marginalized groups already live in fear for their safety yet, we are asking them to voluntarily provide revealing information about their lives.

The 2019 Stroll will be larger – and longer – than ever.

The 17th Annual Uptown Arts Stroll, hosted by Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA), extends farther south than previous years, from Inwood all the way to 135th Street. In order to cover all of that geography, Open Studio days are extended to two weekends instead of just one.

“Otherwise it wouldn’t be a Stroll,” said NoMAA’s Executive Director Joanna Castro.

Previously the Uptown Arts Stroll ended at 155th Street. Castro said there was so much interest from artists living farther south they decided to extend the range.

Many of the events are still in the works. “We are looking forward to a really robust set of NoMAA programming as well as from artists who want to be a part of the stroll,” said Castro.

Castro said she is always humbled by artists who are willing to invite people into their homes and studios to view their artwork and creative process. “We don’t curate it,” she said. “It’s open to any person who self-identifies as an artist. Our hope and our mission is also to encourage folks to buy work by local artists. So all around it’s a win-

are alike. Sometimes several artists will hold a group show in one space. Other times it’s a single artist working at home or in a studio, or perhaps a couple who are both artists. “There are so many dynamics that are created or get created to become an Open Studio.”

The month-long art festival also received more submissions than ever for its annual poster contest. Over 60 people submitted entries this year, up from 40 last year Castro said the posters were judged by a panel of 12 people.

Submissions typically have consistent themes, said Castro. Generally artists include iconic uptown

Artist Liz Roberts took home the $1250 cash prize for her graphic art poster featuring different street signs and a traffic sign that reads: Don’t Walk, Stroll.

An uptown resident for more than 20 years, Roberts has lived in some of its most scenic locations, including Seaman Avenue overlooking Inwood Hill Park and on Audubon Terrace with a view of the Hudson River.

Roberts received an MFA in painting from Temple University and has had a long career as a graphic artist. Over the years she’s experimented with a number of mediums. She found oil paints offer rich textures and vibrant

colors, but working with them can be toxic. While acrylics are easier to mix, the results are too plastic-y. “I tend to go over things and the acrylics don’t hold up that well,” she said.

Working with gouache changed all of that. “It kind of forces you to be more in the moment,” she said. “You can’t really go back into it and you have to work within a time, which I enjoy. It forces me to stretch a little bit.”

The month long event kicks off at the United Palace on May 28th. Events run through June 27th.

Chanting “Don’t be a bummer, save our summer,” public school students and service providers assembled at City Hall on March 28 to urge Mayor Bill de Blasio to protect summer camp funding for middle school youth in the latest budget – and fiercely criticized the perennial need to push for youth resources.

The city’s Fiscal Year 2020 budget proposes to cut summer programs for over 34,000 middle school youths throughout the city.

“We’re doing the dance that’s unnecessary,” said City Councilmember Debi Rose, Chair of the Council’s Youth Services Committee. “We are pitting our young people against other things in the budget.”

Nelson Palacios is Coordinator of Children and Youth Services for Southeast Bronx Neighborhood Centers. The group runs summer and afterschool programs for middle school youths in the McKinley Houses and other locations. Palacios said retaining the funding is crucial.

“This is life and death for us, especially in the Bronx. It’s life and death,” he said. “These

children, without summer camp, there’s nothing to do, and they then become idle. And some of them won’t make it. They’ll end up on the streets, doing things they’re not supposed to be doing.”

For the past several years, the de Blasio administration has threatened to slash

money for summer camps, though the funding has been rescued by the City Council each time and included in the budget.

“We need to make sure that [kids] have educational opportunities, that they have fun, but safely, and that parents have peace of mind during the summer,” said Rose.

Advocates said that low-income families would be hit the hardest.

Founded in 2011, the Campaign for Children is comprised of over 150 coalition member groups – including early childhood education

and after-school providers throughout the city.In a survey conducted by the organization,

91 percent of parents said they relied on summer programs to be able to go to work or school. In addition, 64 percent of respondents said they rely on summer programs for free, healthy meals for their children.

And it is not only families and children enrolled in the programs that are affected.

M ore than 100 track and field meets are held each season

at The Fort Washington Avenue Armory.

Tech on the TrackThis past Tuesday, the elite training ground

was host to another set of strivers. More than 2,200 public high school students

hit The Armory on April 2 for the 2019 NYC Computer Science Fair (CS Fair), which bills itself as the city’s “largest annual college and career inspiration event” for public high school students studying computer science.

The event is aimed at students traditionally underserved in those fields.

Now in its sixth year, the CS Fair is presented by nonprofits CSNYC, Tech:NYC,

and TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools). Last year’s notable speakers included Department of Education (DOE) Chancellor Richard Carranza.

Venture capitalist Fred Wilson, the founder of CSNYC and CS Fair, said the goal of the fair is to motivate young people.

“What we’re trying to do is inspire them. We’re trying to show them jobs that they could get, colleges they could go to,” Wilson said.

He noted that approximately 175,000 kids

graduate from New York City public high schools every year.

“If we got 10 percent of those kids to focus on computer science, software engineering, that would be [thousands of] new software engineers potentially coming into the New York City workforce. That would be huge.”

An avid cyclist, Cahill was participating in an event to raise awareness for cystic fibrosis (CF), an incurable and chronic disease affecting the lungs and digestive system.

Now 62 years old, the fact that he is still pedaling defies many odds.

Cahill himself suffers from CF, and the average life expectancy for those with the disease is 37 years.

He attributed his extended life span to frequent exercise.

“[It’s] the single most important thing in my life that’s kept me well beyond the expected

life expectancy,” he said. “You need to keep the body moving. For people with cystic fibrosis, it’s a great form of therapy because it keeps your lungs clear.”

Though the disease does not have a cure, Cahill said that treatments are improving all the time.

Cahill once ran marathons to help combat his disease, but switched to cycling after needing two knee replacements.

“Now I’m cycling as much as possible, trying to raise awareness for the

disease,” he said. Cahill took part in a “Cycle for Cystic

Fibrosis” event on March 28 at Chelsea Piers to raise money for CF research. It was sponsored by UnitedHealthcare in conjunction with the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which provides support for CF patients, which number about 30,000 in the United States.

Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason founded the organization after his son Gunner was diagnosed with CF in 1993.

“Cycle for Cystic Fibrosis” served as the kickoff for Wellness Week, a partnership

between UnitedHealthcare and Chelsea Piers Fitness that encourages people to be more active by offering group exercise classes for only $5 each.

“It’s about helping people live healthier lives and getting them to exercise,” said McGuire, Chief Executive Officer of UnitedHealthcare of New York.

“Working with the Boomer Esiason Foundation has been great for us,” remarked McGuire, who also took part in the fitness

On April 5, 1969, 2001 was the last movie shown at what was then the Loew’s Theatre. A few days later, on Easter Sunday, it reopened as the Palace Cathedral and Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II, better known as Rev. Ike, held his first service there.

The United Palace is showing the film this coming Sun., April 7.

“We are celebrating and recreating that transition by showing 2001 and honoring the 50 years the church has owned the building,” said Mike Fitelson, United Palace’s Executive Producer.

He added that the sci-fi movie is about consciousness-raising, and is a perfect choice for a spiritual center that shows films. “2001 goes from the dawn of humanity as apes, and is with humanity facing the great unknown and the great question in the form of the Monolith,” he said.

In the grand tradition of United Palace film screenings, there will be a host of events. The pre-show includes a performance by the

Director for Policy and Advocacy, of the Citizens’ Committee for Children, a nonprofit and nonpartisan child advocacy organization, said that the late inclusion of summer camp funding in the budget creates problems for some service providers.

Last year, funding was not restored until June, only a few weeks before summer camps were starting.

“Oftentimes the money is made available too late, and programs can’t plan effectively, keep the staff that they need,” Rodríguez said. “This time we want to see the changes and investments made now, early on, to make sure we can plan accordingly for these kids.”

Student Mark Anthony, who attended a Beacon summer program, said it had a profound effect on him.

“It was way better than me staying cooped up in my room watching TV,” he remarked. “I met friends, had activities, learned about engineering, and now I’m thinking I might even apply to MIT when I grow up.”

Many at the rally also called on the city to

expand funding for afterschool programs for elementary school students.

“We would have to let students go if more funding doesn’t come through,” said Lizzette Mejía, Program Director of Sunnyside Community Services, which runs an after-school program that offers homework help, dance, sports, STEM classes and other activities. “We operate in the community, and it’s a safe haven for them.”

Palacios explained that summer camp also helps bridge an educational gap during the summertime, and helps kids engage in constructive activities in the community. He said that summer camp funding should be baselined in the city’s annual budget.

“Every year we got through this. This is the same political dance that goes on year in, year out,” said Palacios. “Every year we come here and beg for money, hold these rallies. At the very last minute, the City Council usually bails us out, but we have to go through this process, which is very difficult, and at times a lot of kids fall through the cracks.”

Esiason suggested that his greatest legacy would be the work of his Foundation and the battle his son has waged against the disease while performing advocacy.

“If I’m judged on anything in my life, it will be on that and his success,” he said. “The fact that he’s living and he’s healthy, and he’s fighting a disease and he’s advocating for people with that same disease unselfishly and putting himself out there, I can’t even begin to express the amount of pride that I have in that regard.”

Cahill said he was not diagnosed with CF until age 10, which is relatively late as far as the disease goes.

“The technology is better now. They can diagnose earlier, the therapies are better,” he said.

“They’re detecting kids earlier, which is better,” added McGuire. “Through Boomer’s foundation and all the research now there are better drugs, there is better understanding of the disease.”

Cahill experienced a significant health challenge in 2012 when he required a double lung transplant, which was performed at The Gunnar Esiason Adult Cystic Fibrosis and Lung Program at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Washington Heights.

“I’ll be seven years post-double lung transplant,” he said. “They do amazing work there.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who implemented the Computer Science for All initiative to bring computer science to every public school student by 2025, visited the fair and spent time walking around the hall and greeting students. He was escorted by Wilson, who said he wanted the Mayor to see the real-world representation of his initiative.

“For him to see, these are the kids, they’re learning computer science, and they’re looking at universities they can study at and places they can get jobs at, that’s important,” said Wilson.

Students showcased technology applications that they worked on in school.

A contingent from Millennium Art Academy in the Bronx designed an app that would allow students to immediately alert school safety agents or the NYPD regarding a school emergency or problem incident.

“This could also be used to compile data

so parents can see how safe the schools are,” said student April Hamilton. She remarked that the CS Fair has increased her interest in a tech career, and said she was honored to show the school project to so many people.

“It feels great,” said Hamilton. “We get

“It’s the one time of the year when I can see it all in one place,” he said. “And you see who these kids are. There’s more women, there’s more color. This is our future.”
