Invocation & Call to Worship

Leader: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen.

Leader: Jesus forgave sins, preached good news, and filled all people with the hope of new life. Jesus took upon Himself the full consequences of our sinfulness—even the agony of abandonment by God—in order that we might be spared. But our Lord could not be held by the power of death. Jesus appeared to His followers, triumphant from the grave, in newness of life. He has shown His disciples His hands and feet in order that we might know that the One who was crucified is the Lord and Savior of the world.

Opening Song Set: “Come People of the Risen King”

Come, people of the risen King Who delight to bring Him praise. Come all and tune your hearts to sing To the morning star of grace. From the shifting shadows of the earth We will lift our eyes to Him, Where steady arms of mercy reach To gather children in.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Let ev’ry tongue rejoice! One heart, one voice, O church of Christ, rejoice!

Come, those whose joy is morning sun And those weeping through the night. Come those who tell of battles won And those struggling in the fight. For His perfect love will never change And His mercies never cease But follow us through all our days With the certain hope of peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Let ev’ry tongue rejoice! One heart, one voice, O church of Christ, rejoice!

Come young and old from ev’ry land, Men and women of the faith. Come those with full or empty hands. Find the riches of His grace.

Over all the world His people sing, Shore to shore we hear them call The truth that cries through ev’ry age, “Our God is all in all!”

Rejoice! Rejoice! Let ev’ry tongue rejoice! One heart, one voice, O church of Christ, rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice! Let ev’ry tongue rejoice! One heart, one voice, O church of Christ, rejoice!

“I Know That My Redeemer Lives”

I know that my Redeemer lives; What comfort this sweet sentence gives! He lives, He lives, who once was dead; He lives, my ever-living Head.

He lives triumphant from the grave, He lives eternally to save, He lives all-glorious in the sky, He lives exalted there on high.

Women He lives to bless me with His love, He lives to plead for me above. He lives my hungry soul to feed, He lives to help in time of need.

Men He lives to grant me rich supply, He lives to guide me with His eye, He lives to comfort me when faint, He lives to hear my soul's complaint.

All He lives, all glory to His name! He lives, my Jesus, still the same. Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives, "I know that my Redeemer lives!"

Confession of Sins

All: Lord, bring new life where we are worn and tired; new love where we have turned hard-hearted; forgiveness where we feel hurt and where we have wounded; and the joy and freedom of Your Holy Spirit where we are prisoners of ourselves.

[A Moment of Silence]

Assurance of Forgiveness

Leader: To all and to each, on his community and on his friends, where regret is real, Jesus pronounces His pardon and grants us the right to begin again. People: Thanks be to God! Amen.

Acts 5:29-42 ESV

29But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. 30The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. 31God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

33When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them. 34But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while. 35And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. 36For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered. 38So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; 39but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice, 40and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. 42And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.

1 Peter 1:3-9 ESV

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

John 20:19-31 ESV

19On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

24Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

26Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

30Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Affirmation of Faith

Leader: This is the good news that we have received, in which we stand, and by which we are saved: All: Christ died for our sins, was buried, was raised on the third day, and appeared first to the women, then to Peter and the Twelve, and then to many faithful witnesses. We believe Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One of God, the Firstborn of all creation, the Firstborn from the dead, in whom all things hold together, in whom the fullness of God was pleased to dwell by the power of the Spirit. Christ is the head of the body, the church, and by the blood of the cross reconciles all things to God. Amen.

Sermon Song: “He is Arisen, Glorious Word”

He is arisen! Glorious Word! Now reconciled is God, my Lord; The gates of heav’n are open. My Jesus did triumphant die, And Satan’s arrows broken lie, Destroyed hell’s fiercest weapon. O hear what cheer! Christ victorious, Rising glorious, Life is giving. He was dead but now is living!

Sermon: “Evening Breath” John 20 “Peace be with you.” Imagine hearing those words while seeing the risen Jesus. With a simple proclamation, Jesus changes the whole direction of the church. But first, He breathes on them and bestows the Holy Spirit. Instead of fear, we get to live out faith and forgiveness.

Holy Spirit, come abide within; May Your joy be seen in all I do— Love enough to cover ev'ry sin In each thought and deed and attitude, Kindness to the greatest and the least, Gentleness that sows the path of peace. Turn my striving into works of grace. Breath of God, show Christ in all I do.

Holy Spirit, from creation's birth, Giving life to all that God has made, Show Your power once again on earth; Cause Your church to hunger for Your ways. Let the fragrance of our prayers arise. Lead us on the road of sacrifice That in unity the face of Christ Will be clear for all the world to see.

Closing Song: “Anastasis” (O Praise the Name)

I cast my mind to Calvary Where Jesus bled and died for me I see His wounds His hands His feet My Saviour on that cursed tree

His body bound and drenched in tears They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb The entrance sealed by heavy stone Messiah still and all alone

O praise the Name of the Lord our God O praise His Name forevermore For endless days we will sing Your praise Oh Lord oh Lord our God

Then on the third at break of dawn The Son of heaven rose again O trampled death where is your sting The angels roar for Christ the King

The total of $2,383 will be sent to the Northwest District which is managing requests and disbursing the funds from churches across the District. Thank you, FCLC, for being a blessing during this difficult time! Your giving is a good reminder of what the word “concordia” means. It is the Latin word for harmony; literally, it means “with one heart”. How wonderful that we can stand together, support and care for the people at Concordia University Portland with one heart!

Summer Day Camps at FCLC! FCLC summer camp has a new tentative start date of July 6th (hopefully). A new updated registration form will be available on our church website soon. Questions/Concerns? Please contact Brett Lindemood ([email protected]).

The church staff is available throughout the week (contact info below) as well as ministry teams and your Elder. As spiritual or physical needs arise—such as food, medicine, transportation—please let us know! During this time of staying at home, the FCLC campus remains closed, but the church is active in ministry through online worship services on Sundays at 9 am, prayer support, on-line classes/visits and other ways of encouragement. Methods may change, but the work of ministry and showing love for one another continues. Together in the Spirit, let’s grow in Christ and help others do the same (Gal. 6:9-10).
