THE USE OF BLENDED LEARNING
“TIPS AND IDEAS
FOR REGIONAL TEACHERS”
JUAN ESTEBAN LÓPEZ RODRIGUEZ., B.A.
BLENDED LEARNING (1)
“Blended learning is a coherent design
approach that openly assesses and
integrates the strengths of face-to-face and
online learning to address worthwhile
educational goals.”
(Garrison & Vaughn, 2008 as cited in
Kinchenham, A., 2011).
“ Blended learning is the thoughtful
fusion of face-to-face and online learning
experiences … most important Blended
learning is the fundamental redesign that
transforms the structure of, and approach
to, teaching and learning”
Garrison and Vaughman (2008, p.5).
BLENDED LEARNING (2)
BLENDED LEARNING IN
COLOMBIA’S EDUCATION
• Colombian National Ministry of Education.
• British Council.
• Dinamizadores en E-Learning
• Secretaries of Education.
• Ciudadanos Digitales.
• Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Education.
WHAT CAN IT BE OBTAINED FROM
BLENDED LEARNING?
• Today blended learning can refer to any combination of
different methods of learning, different learning
environments, different learning styles.
• A blended classroom takes full advantage of 21st century
instructional practices but face-to-face interaction is
essential.
• Students will have a much richer and more enhanced
classroom experience once they are with the teacher.
• When “appropriately” implemented, blended learning can
significantly improve the learning experience. (Pena-
Sanchez & Hicks, 2006; Stracke, 2005; and Stracke,
2007a)
STRENGTHS OF BLENDED LEARNING IN
LANGUAGES (1)
• Provides a more individualized learning
experience.
• Provides more personalized learning support.
• Supports and encourages independent and
collaborative learning
• Increases student engagement in learning.
• Accommodates a variety of learning styles.
STRENGTHS OF BLENDED LEARNING IN
LANGUAGES (2)
• Provides a place to practice the target language
beyond the classroom.
• Provides a less stressful practice environment
for the target language.
• Provides flexible study, anytime or anywhere, to
meet learners’ needs.
• Helps students develop valuable and necessary
twenty-first century learning skills.
Blended Learning is, by its very nature,
“student-centered.” (1)
IN A STUDENT-CENTERED CLASSROOM, STUDENTS …
• are involved in the learning process.
• don’t depend on their teacher all the time.
• communicate with each other in pairs and small
groups.
• value each other’s contributions.
• cooperate.
• learn from each other.
Blended Learning is, by its very
nature, “student-centered.” (2)
IN A STUDENT-CENTERED CLASSROOM, THE TEACHER …
•Helps to guide students.
•Manages and directs their activities and
language learning.
•Helps students develop their language
skills.
WHAT IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE IN
ORDER TO BE AN E-MODERATOR?
• Students can’t be “taught” – they can only be
helped to learn. In a student-centered
classroom, our role is to help and encourage
students to develop their skills, but without
relinquishing our more traditional role as a
source of information, advice, and knowledge.
In a student-centered classroom, the teacher
and the students are a team working together.
(Jones N. 2007, 25)

QUOTES
• There can be infinite uses of the computer
and of new age technology, but if the
teachers themselves are not able to bring it
into the classroom and make it work, then it
fails. (Nancy Kassebaum)
• Do not confine your students to your own
learning, for they were born in another time.
(Chinese proverb)
