President’s Message:

“Courage Is Contagious” Pass it on.

2012 JUNE

The Lake Country Republican Club Meets every fourth Tuesday of the month at the library

here in Quitman ,Texas at 6 PM

It’s Now, or Never!!

I hope this letter finds everyone happy and in good health. After our

Republican Primary election was over I’m sure that some of us were

ecstatic and some, well, not so much. However what we must re-

member is this, We are all Republicans! We are Constitutional Con-

servatives, dedicated to the ideas espoused, set forth and protected in the Constitution. of

the United States. We believe in a Constitutionally restricted Federal Government. Why,

you ask, why restrict the government so much? Because the Constitution says so! Be-

cause government, indeed all government, if allowed to wander where it should not, will

ultimately become the bane of Freedom and Liberty. Because the Constitution is the bed-

rock foundation that has secured, in writing, the Freedom and Liberty that our Forefathers

knew we would need in order to achieve greatness as a shining light to the world. It is the

same Freedom and Liberty ultimately granted to us by God himself as his creations. And

it is the same Freedom and Liberty that all governments, if given time, will pervert and

attempt to steal from We The People, replacing it with a version of their own. We must

heed the warning from our Founding Fathers. We must realize that it is the Constitution of

the United States, which gives our government authority to even exist in the first place.

And it is the Constitution and the freedoms and liberties which it embodies and protects,

which will give us the tools to get our nation back on track. Our Constitution has given us

the tools we need to fix this train wreck.

I heard just today that the Obama, while speaking to the press, has declared, or more accu-

rately decreed, that “the private sector is fine,” referring to our economic lack of job

growth, massive unemployment and overall malaise of an economy. I just wonder what

it’s going to take to convince the American public that simply by having Obama declare

something does not necessarily make it true. We must be diligent in our duties as responsi-

ble Americans by electing conservative Constitutionally minded legislators on both the

State and Federal levels and then staying alert to their actions. We must support those men

and women who are doing their jobs well and chastise or replace those who don’t. Here in

our State Congressional District we have a golden opportunity right now to make a huge

impact on our Texas State government. Bryan Hughes has announced that he will seek the

office of Speaker of the Texas House when they reconvene next year. Bryan is one of the

best possible tools we could ever hope to have to correct the liberal path that Texas have

been straying down in recent years. I have personally known this young man for many

years before he went into politics. I consider him the type of Constitutional conservative

leader that we could depend on to redirect our governmental policies back towards the

Constitutional right. Bryan needs our support. I hope we can all get behind this upcoming

star of a leader, because believe me, it’s either now or never!!

God Bless America! Greg Bowen LCRC President

LCRC meets on the 26th this month. What else happened on this date in American History?

1948 - The Berlin Air Lift begins.

This is one of the great chapters in American history. It is always a great read for adults and children to understand American tenacity. If your children or grand children are not knowl-edgeable on this subject they will be forever grateful if you direct their reading. Children especially enjoy reading about the “Candy Bombers.”

LCRC meets in the Quitman Library at 6 PM. Enter on the east side toward the back.

GRACELAND Happy 25th

In fairness to my readers who happen to be Elvis fans, this is not about the King’s Graceland. That Graceland would of course be more than 25 years old. I am talking about Paul Simon’s, Grammy award winning, 1986 album (yes they were still producing vinyl back then) of the same name. Graceland was a fusion of melodic American jazz, African rhythms and traditional rock guitar riffs. Don’t worry. This is not a nostalgic stroll down memory lane. This is the Sentinel. This story is definitely political. Imagine an iconic rock star taking on the UN and winning in the court of public opinion. Imagine the stated goals of the left (freedom from oppression) in a fiery crash with their actual goals (the accumulation of raw power).

This would not be the first time a legendary rock star shifted politically to the right. The year before John Lennon was gunned down by Mark David Chapman, he donated $1000 for the purchase of bullet proof vests to the New York Police Department. Paul Simon received a degree in English Literature from Queens College in New York. Although I was a big fan, I have always assumed his politics leaned left because he was both New York educated and in the entertainment business. It’s hard to be a conservative when you are swimming in that soup.

Remember, in the mid 1980’s, South Africa was known for the policy of apartheid, which codified a firm separation between the black and white populations. The white minority managed to hold onto power and the reactionary, somewhat Marxist, black political party, the African National Congress (ANC), sprang up to try to wrestle power away. The ANC petitioned the UN to create an embargo against trade with South Africa. This covered raw material, manufactured goods and it also included cultural exchange. As is typical in these actions, the citizens the policy was supposed to assist suffered more than the ruling elite. You probably remember the period as a time when pension funds, universities and city governments were pressured to divest of any South African bonds or stocks.

In the mean time, Paul Simon became concerned that his music, after a long string of highly successful albums, was becoming predictable. When feeling unchallenged by competition, highly successful people often compete with themselves for a personal best. Simon was looking for a new sound and his search took him to South Africa where he collaborated with musicians recognized as the best in South Africa but relatively unknown in international circles. Graceland was an instant hit for which he took the Grammy for Best Album in 1986 and Best Title Song in 1987.

About this time, the ANC pointed out to the UN that Paul Simon had violated the ‘cultural

exchange’ portion of the embargo. Overnight the apartheid-busting-hero was assaulted from all

sides. To rehabilitate his reputation and the success of the still flying-off-the-shelf album, Simon

put together a group of South African musicians, who were living in exile because of their stance

on apartheid, and took the songs from the album on a world tour. Bomb threats accompanied

most venues and at two, actually exploded but with no one hurt. This was a case of an individual

taking on the world’s deliberative body by taking his case directly to the people of the world.

Page 5: “Courage Is Contagious” Pass it on. It’s Now, or Never!!Graceland was a fusion of melodic American jazz, African rhythms and traditional rock guitar riffs. Dont worry. This is

5

Imagine the confusion on the left when a UN policy, designed to bring the policy of apartheid to its knees, was in conflict with the person who had actually done it. Simon went straight to the source, the ANC. He pointed out his achievement of bringing the races in South Africa together on a world stage and asked, what exactly was their problem with that? In a response which must warm the cockles of any union thug’s heart, the ANC said that Simon should have gone through them first. When Simon invited some of the South African musicians to NY for a recording session, they asked where they might get a permit to visit Central Park; such was their concept of freedom. It never occurred to Simon that he would have to get a permit to work with South African musicians in South Africa. Encountering these restrictions to freedom is an education even to left leaning Americans.

During a press conference, a black, agenda driven reporter asked Simon why he violated this UN policy. Intellectually, the reporter failed to notice that Simon had violated the policy of apartheid and put it on full display. Simon pointed out that fact and asked the reporter if he had a problem with a white person performing on stage with black people and if so wasn’t he actually supporting apartheid? Simon was one individual quite publically taking on the preeminent deliberative world body. In typical New York fashion, he was not backing down. American musicians, just by being American, can be potent ambassadors. There is a lesson, even from left leaning individuals when they live their liberty.

Five years after the release of the album, which was still selling well, Nelson Mandela, a South African version of Gandhi, recently released from prison, invited Simon and his South African troupe to perform in Johannesburg. Now we may find Nelson Mandela’s politics to fall short of Thomas Jefferson’s, and his wife Winnie was a Marxist who was complicit in the ‘brutal elimination’ of her opposition. (The marriage did not last long after Nelson’s release from prison.) Although a collaborative effort to produce the album, it was the brain child of a single individual. Inviting the group to perform in Johannesburg was the action of another individual.

There are many such examples in history. It shows that liberty is held by the individual, not by a race, class, gender, or any group. This is a fundamental conservative philosophy and antithetical to the leftist world view of collectivism. Individuals, working to produce the goods and services which people need and value, are always more effective than government at producing a good result. The individuals are closer to the problem, the need or the desire which consumers want to have satisfied. They have an incentive to address all the nuances and get it right. The remote governing body has no perspective and little incentive to get it right. This is why in free societies you have choices which range from ‘Smart Cars’ to ‘Hummers.’ In leftist totalitarian societies you have to wait years for delivery of a ‘Trabant,’ the only personal transportation available for you to purchase. Even after you take delivery of your new Trabant, you will want to have a good pair of shoes because much of the time you will still be walking. The participants in the production of and consumption of Graceland all benefited. The participants in the UN embargo all suffered. This sums up the difference between the conservative value of individual liberty and left’s desire to concentrate power.

For me, I hope you all have “Diamonds on the soles of your shoes.”

“Graceland” went on to sell over 12 million copies. A 25th anniversary edition of Graceland has been

released for sale. You can see the full story in an incredible documentary aired on A&E called “Under

African Skies.” Additionally, the documentary will be shown at select theaters around the country.

How Did We Come to be in This Place? It is a steady drum beat. “We must care for those who cannot care for

themselves.” Indigents show up at the emergency room for a routine medical issue which could be handled cheaply at the local clinic. A motorcyclist decides to forego the whole helmet routine and now has to be spoon fed. A couple loses their retirement funding in a bad investment. So the rest of us are expected to pick up the bill. This is a great humanitarian myth and it is toxic.

Oh I can hear it now. I’m just another uncaring Republican ready to toss grandparents off the cliff. Allow me to point out that I am a grandparent. But in the years it has taken me to achieve grandparenthood, I have observed the impact this thinking has had on Americans.

The idea that you have to shoulder the costs of everyone else’s failures is sold to us with the reassurance that, when we screw up, someone else will pick up the tab. Well that’s a relief. This whole responsibility thing can ruin a nap. We are now licensed to screw-up at will. Responsibility is a major inconvenience. Being free of responsibility is liberating. It’s like winning the lottery. You can spend on anything and never have to look at the bank account because you know it’s covered. That’s the myth.

The toxic part is what it does to an individual to think this way. It seems to me that we witness a lot more irresponsible behavior these days. Bad choices are the norm: children being born to single mothers, abandoned educational opportunities, self gratification through crippling debt. These were rare exceptions in an earlier America. This poor decision making makes us all poorer.

What is lost here is the impact this has on our rights. The motorcyclist who chooses not to wear a helmet knows you will pick up the cost if he is injured. You retaliate by insisting the State pass a law mandating the wearing of helmets. The State caused a problem when it declared you were responsible for the cost of risks taken by others. But you then rewarded the State by giving it the power to intrude into the lives of individuals. The State gets bigger and the citizen becomes smaller.

This plays out in all aspects of our lives. A bank which engages in risky investments is deemed “too big to fail,” and you have to pick up the tab. Perhaps you, as an individual, decided that this particular bank was poorly managed and wisely put your money elsewhere. Yet the burden falls to you anyway. Where is anyone’s incentive to make good decisions? You don’t care which bank you use because they are all insured the same. The bank doesn’t care if the borrower can repay the loan because the government guarantees the loan. The accumulative effect of this subsidized poor decision making is devastating to society as a whole and affects each of us individually.

The motorcyclist, if he had to wonder, “Who will take care of me if I get hurt?” may make better decisions regarding his own personal safety. If the investor bore the full brunt of his poor decision making, he would be more cautious. Young girls, if they knew the State would not subsidize their promiscuous behaviors, might learn to say no again.

As inconvenient as personal responsibility is, it is the fundamental building block of your liberty. This is what the Founders were referring to when they insisted that only a “good” people would be capable of maintaining their liberty. You can’t be good and irresponsible at the same time. The Founders depended on the preachers in the pulpit, free of the influence of government, to bring this message to the people. This is why the first part of the First Amendment protects religious institutions from the intrusion of government.

Page 7: “Courage Is Contagious” Pass it on. It’s Now, or Never!!Graceland was a fusion of melodic American jazz, African rhythms and traditional rock guitar riffs. Dont worry. This is

7

We think we have a choice. We can rely on ourselves, we can rely on others or we can live in chaos. History tells us there is only delay but no real distinction between the latter two. Each pig feeds freely at the trough when he thinks it is the other pig’s responsibility to fill it. But when the trough runs empty, all that is left is the squealing and the recriminations. We see this in Greece today. Will we see this in America tomorrow? It’s time to fill your own trough.

Right vs. Right

Although we all enjoy a good debate between a Constitutional conserva-tive and a left leaning, brain dead idiot, there is not much to be learned from it. The left’s solution is always the same: raise taxes on the greedy robber barons to subsidize the foolish and often destructive behaviors of their various voting blocks. Yawn.

If you truly wish to be stimulated intellectually, listen to a debate between two Constitutional conservatives. It is here that we find out who we are. It is here that our intellectual muscles are exercised and strengthen. It is here that we explore the best route back to the constitutional republic the Founders created for us.

Often times the debate is not even one of principle. Some of the arguments are strategic. Some are born of perspective and perception. Some come from how deep each participant has peeled back the onion’s inner layers. All of these arguments add to our understanding of what it means to be a constitutional conservative.

Some understand conservative to mean adherence to a set of principles which have historically been proven to be successful in improving the human condition. Here, decisions are informed by the wisdom of history. Some understand conservative to mean adherence to a relatively new set of radical libertarian principles set forth by our Founders. These radical libertarian principles de-fine ‘American Exceptionalism.’ These two definitions are not mutually exclusive and the large subset where they intersect is where the American Ideal resides.

I often receive thoughtful emails from readers on issues currently in the public arena. Below, is an email from Bill, a reader who is responsible for a significant quantity of Sentinel content. Following is my reply. The Sentinel appreciates Bill’s consent to have this exchange printed and it is my hope that this exchange will provoke thought and, if I am lucky, responses from other readers on this topic. In fairness to Bill, I have had time to consider and amend my original response. (As is my habit, I have maintained font and formatting of the material originally re-ceived.) Thank you Bill.

Bill writes:

For all of history, in any given culture, the terms and conditions of marriage have been de-fined by the religion(s) of that culture. Until the fairly recent invention of the “civil cere-mony” a wedding has been a religious ceremony. Can you say “Holy Matrimony”? I don’t have to go to the county court house, fill out a form, pay a fee, and get a license authorizing my pas-tor to baptize me or serve me Holy Communion; why do I have to get the government’s permis-sion for him to marry me? When a Presbyterian minister before a Presbyterian congregation in a Presbyterian church unites a Presbyterian couple in Holy Matrimony is he/she acting as an agent of the state? Nothing in the Constitution gives the government reason or authority to inquire into the marital status of an individual citizen. The Justice of the Peace has no more business marrying people than he/she does sprinkling Roman Catholic babies, circumcising

Does the name Pavlov ring a bell?

8

Jewish boys, baptizing Baptists, or serving Holy Communion. On the IRS Form 1040 there is

no box to check if I’ve been baptized, sprinkled, or circumcised; why is there a box to check if

I’m married? Stated differently, the government has no more business telling the church who

they can, cannot, must, or must not marry than it does telling it who it can, cannot, must, or

must not accept into membership, baptize, serve Holy Communion, or ordain as a minister or

priest. If the government would butt out of marriage and leave it to the church, a politician’s

position on gay marriage would be as immaterial as his/her position on infant baptism or the

ordination of women.

Having said all that, lest someone leap to a seriously wrong conclusion, I hasten to affirm

that both the Holy Scripture and my church teach, and I believe, that we are commanded by

God to live in either chastity in singleness or fidelity in marriage between one man and one

woman.

In anticipation of the argument that the state must define and encourage marriage in order to

protect children, I will point out that current welfare laws encourage women to have babies

out of wedlock, no one would support making it a crime to have children out of wedlock, and it

should be a legal requirement that both the natural or adoptive parents of a child are

responsible for the support, care, feeding, clothing, and education of a child whether they are

married or not.

Fire suit on . . . flame away!

Your editor responds:

There is merit to much of what you say in this email. The reason that there is a check box on the IRS form regarding your marital status is that the state has an interest in traditional marriage as it is in these relationships from which new citizens are born. The state uses the tax code as a way of influencing, in some small way, these decisions. This brings us to the crux of the problem. The state should not be manipulating the citizenry. The founders realized the potential horrors of direct taxation and outlawed it in the Constitution as originally written. This was wise and the Sixteenth Amendment foolish. If the Sixteenth could be repealed the issue would probably go away, making us both happy.

I am sympathetic to the notion of protecting children, and traditional marriage, consisting of both a masculine and feminine influence, has historically been the best structure to insure that the child is both nurtured (feminine) and protected (masculine). Traditional, pre-leftist religions were the best at promoting these unions. Many modern iterations of contemporary religions have been infiltrated by leftist ideology and have political agendas which I think are harmful to the traditional Judeo-Christian foundation of our country. As polygamy is heterosexual in nature and therefore more useful to the state than homosexual unions, I give great weight to the slippery slope argument even though you did not mention it.

I find many of your points regarding marriage to be accurate and compelling. I think the problems may be deeper. Currently we are dealing with non-traditional (uninformed by the wisdom of history) religious institutions and a tax structure which the founders had the foresight to recognize as toxic. If the tax code could be restored to something the founders would

Page 9: “Courage Is Contagious” Pass it on. It’s Now, or Never!!Graceland was a fusion of melodic American jazz, African rhythms and traditional rock guitar riffs. Dont worry. This is

9

recognize, and if modern religious institutions could embrace a more traditional roll, these prob-lems would go away.

The age of political correctness has eradicated the social sanction. Not long ago, It would have been unthinkable for a church to join a homosexual couple in “Holy Wedlock.” Such a church would be held up to ridicule and their membership kept predictably small. Some may not like this but it was an effective tool for moderating public behavior without the intrusion of govern-ment. Not long ago, no responsible adult would wear a shirt with offensive language that a par-ent might be required to explain to a minor child. Without this social sanction, the population of responsible adults has dwindled to a relative handful. Our government, through leftist welfare programs encourages out of wedlock births. In the age of the social sanction, out of wedlock births were more rare and never flouted in public where a bad example would be set. Religious charity used to handle unwed motherhood with a little financial aid and a lot of introspection. Our government, taking over this role from religious institutions, offers a lot of the former and almost none of the later. Predictably the situation has deteriorated. The problem is that both politics and religion have been infected with leftist ideology. We must simultaneously correct both institutions.

It has been a good month for Republicans. Even though they sent Bill Clinton to Wisconsin, presumably not to announce that, ’the era of big labor is over,’ that very well could be the out-come. Scott Walker defeated the recall with a greater margin than that with which he won elec-tion in the first place. This was a stinging rejection of big, public sector labor. It also shows that nothing succeeds like success. Wisconsin is leading the charge to recovery. The areas of the country which are experiencing economic recovery are doing so because of the guidance of con-servative Republican governors. We should point that out as often as possible. Left leaning Wis-consinites are finding it more comfortable to shift their weight to their right foot. Wisconsin could be in play come the November general election. We expect other states may dial back their public sector unions as well.

Additionally, the 6% exit polling differential I have been noticing held up in Wisconsin. What this means is that in states where Romney polls down 4%, he is actually up 2%. If this 6% contin-ues to hold up, 2012 may be a rout.

The sizes of the scandals in the Obama administration are becoming so large that the press can no longer cover them up. Fast and Furious stonewalling by Eric Holder is starting to get some attention after a year. The self aggrandizing leaks from the administration are beginning to back-fire. Reports that Obama issues a “kill list,” single handedly picking out targets conjures up im-ages of LBJ picking out Viet Namese bombing targets in his underwear. Allies such as Israel must be becoming wary of dealing with an administration which would, for domestic political gain, paint a target on Israel’s back by outing them for their assistance in infecting Iranian centrifuges with a worm (software designed to cause destruction.) Intentional or not, who could forgive the President himself for outing Seal Team 6 for their role in the OBL assignation. (Some have insinu-ated that this may have led to their death a short time later.)

A more encouraging leak and one probably not put out by the administration is that the Su-preme Court will strike down Obama Care in a 5/4 decision. Profoundly embarrassing is that this decision could be so close. What constitution did they take an oath to protect?

Gender driven abortions are the real war on women. Where is the sanity?

Paul Krugman of the NY Times, speaking on This Week with George Step-on-all-of-us, stated that the US economy is doing well and the Chinese economy is in the tank. Paul must be look-ing at the world in the same fun-house mirror he uses to make himself look tall.

Fun with numbers - We keep hearing that Massachusetts was 47th in job creation while Rom-ney was Governor. But this is an average including the 50th on the day Romney took office. When Romney left office, Massachusetts was 30th and had an unemployment rate of 4.2%. Using these same math skills, I can claim to be stronger now that I am old and busted up be-cause when I was young, it would take me four trips and both hands to carry in $100 worth of groceries while now I can carry in $100 worth of groceries with one hand in a single trip.

“Romney doesn’t connect with voters,” we hear constantly. Yet it seems like Obama connects with voters like Ali connected with Frazier.

When a 20% across the board proposed tax cut is referred to as a tax cut for the wealthy it tells you two things: FIRST - the wealthy have already been paying their fair share and SECOND - they have been paying most other peoples fair share too.

Barak Obama claimed that in the economy, “the private sector is doing fine.” indicating his own desire to help only the public sector union employees. Every time he mentions jobs he men-tions “teachers, police and firefighters.” None of these are federal employees—at least not yet. The public sector unemployment rate is 4.2%. Private sector employment rates, depend-ing on the specific sector (construction, manufacturing, financial services, etc.) ranges from 9% to 20%.

Romney fund raising eclipses Obama’s. In fairness the Muslim Brotherhood has not yet sent in their contribution.

Obama is back to talking about “shovel ready” jobs. Didn’t he already tell us they weren’t really shovel ready. The only job I see which is shovel ready is his. Hit it over the head and bury the d—n thing already.

Governors complain about high union salaries & pensions and that restrictive work rules make it difficult to get things done. Well aren’t the high salaries and pensions like a tax from the labor unions? And aren’t the restrictive work rules analogous to government regulation. Government should just listen to itself.

The Obama administration comes down hard on Pakistan subtracting one million dollars of for-eign aid for each year of sentence given to the Pakistani doctor who assisted us in finding Osama bin Laden. This is like a parent taking one M&M from the bag of a misbehaving child for each occurrence of misbehavior. No parent would do this. Take the d—n bag! Send Paki-stan to its room and make it give the Doctor back!

Information regarding Fast and Furious cannot be pried out of this administration after a year and a half of subpoenas and hearings. But top secret information which might make the President seem, well, presidential in an election year comes flying out of the White House like a moose on a bobsled.

Dianne Feinstein, Democrat Senator from California who has been around a long time says the leaks are the worst she has ever seen.

Obama personally decries the leaks, but did he or anyone in his administration ask the media not to publish the leaked information? It says a lot about his credibility on this subject.

Holder appoints an Obama donor and campaign worker to investigate the leaks. Now we are getting somewhere!

Major Hasan - who went all Muslim in the fall of 2009, killing 13 and wounding 29 at Fort Hood, is delaying his trial by growing a beard. So did he read the Koran down to the mass murder part but had not yet gotten to the beard part or did he find it easier to embrace the mass mur-der part but could not bring himself to grow a beard? Seriously, the US Army pushed around by the tactics of a four year old? No wonder they don’t take us seriously.

Thank you Terrell for this great recap! I don’t get local channels so I was piecing it

together.

Thanks so much for this! I was wondering how I would find out which races were a "win, lose or draw." Loved the notes on the democrat ref-erendums. And "Look-a-who?" was priceless...my sentiments, pre-cisely! What ever was she thinking?

I woke at 4:15 am and couldn't get back to sleep. Turned on the TV and FOX was rerun-

ning Brett Baier's Special Report, He was saying Scott Brown had won and won large. I

jumped up and did my first Happy Dance since Nov 2010!

P.S. FOX has just reported that Pascrell, backed by Clinton, has beaten the Obama-

backed guy, Rothman, by a wide margin.

Interesting. The train is coming down the tracks and gathering speed. I hope Romney has

the cojones to knock the crud out of the Left in this country.

Speaking of Romney, I'm going to depart from conventional wisdom. Once in office, I

think he would be more radical than anyone suspects. Why? Because, as a seasoned busi-

nessman, he has likely realized that the only road to fiscal sanity is to bring on massive

cuts to the size of the federal multi-headed monster - not just in numbers, but whole

agencies ...

But, hey, I can live without HUD.

P.S. After thought - the Tea Party is saving the Republican Party ...

Yesterday in Wisconsin and two cities in California, as Ayn Rand would put it,

the producers rose up against the moochers and prevailed!

Don offers the following insight:

There should be many Democrats who are Conservative in their Values so they too are suffer-

ing from Big O’s economy and hopefully many of them are smart enough to figure out that the

O-Healthcare bill has already set many bureaucratic government entities into motion for de-

manding and enforcing lots of Un-American / Socialistic REGULATIONS upon all levels of

businesses which in turn affects all of the consumers (us). This raises costs, cuts jobs, and put

restraints upon ALL.

This sounds like Russia……….huh??

If Americans do not fall upon their knees and TURN to GOD, He will not continue to Bless us.

Terrell, thanks for your update. I will be voting this afternoon.

I do highly recommend everyone using the Free Voter’s Guide for info on RR Commissioners

and Judges. Greg sent the website out and I read it. The DETAILS on those running gave me

lots of info. Based upon what was said by the candidate on personal life was more informative

and those under endorsements also helped me to decide……just all kinds of info to decide!!

Another fabulous job. After the primaries, I should have the time to start posting these on the internet again.

Actually, I’d like to post all of them in the SENTINEL “archives”. It’s great work and deserves a wider

readership, so I’d like to help grow your mailing list.

Many thanks on the kudos as a “gifted writer and editor”! I’m flattered.

Talk to you soon, and again, great job on the SENTINEL!

IF YOU DON'T LIKE MITT ROMNEY, HERE'S SOMETHING TO CONSIDER....

Columnist Andrew McCarthy gives us what probably is the most important question re-garding the upcoming presidential election. if Mitt wins the nomination, as seems very likely, I will enthusiastically support his candidacy. For my friends who have hesitation on that score, I'd just ask you to keep four things in mind: 1.. Justice Scalia just turned 78 2.. Justice Kennedy will turn 78 later this year 3.. Justice Breyer will be 76 in August 4.. Justice Ginsburg turned 81 about a week ago. We wish them all well, of course, but the brute fact is that whoever we elect as president in November is almost certainly going to choose at least one and maybe more new members of the Supreme Court -- in addition to hundreds of other life-tenured federal judges, all of whom will be making momentous decisions about our lives for decades to come. If you don't think it matters whether the guy making those calls is Mitt Romney or Barack Obama, think again! So, for anybody who is thinking of not voting because your favorite didn't get nominated, or writing in a candidate who can't win, imagine this: Mr. Fast & Furious Gun Runner Himself, SUPREME COURT JUSTICE ERIC HOLDER.

STATISTICS PROVE

An Open Letter

Dear Mr. Boehner, Mr. McConnell, et. al; Our federal government is out of control. It is not the role of the federal government to regulate the daily lives of the citizens. It is not the role of the federal government to regulate domestic commerce. It is not the role of the federal government to tell farmers what to grow, nor tell people what to eat. It is not the role of the federal government to dictate the education of our children. It is not the job of the federal government to trespass into state criminal investiga-tions. It is not the role of the federal government to control our rural or municipal affairs; yet, the President has now established federal councils for both rural affairs (Executive Order 13575—Establishment of the White House Rural Council June 9, 2011)and municipal affairs (Executive Order-- Establishing a White House Council on Strong Cities, Strong Communities May 1, 2012). Russia called these councils the “sovyet” and they are the final building blocks to com-munism. It is not the role of the Federal government to be the people’s nanny. It’s not the role of the Federal government to spend this nation into oblivion. Pardon me if I do not get excited about your current budget debate. That drama has outlived itself, and I say let the government shut down for a while; we might buy a few more days of life for our Constitu-tion. I am also not impressed by your resolution on foreign affairs, encouraging “democracies" in foreign nations, while our republic is being actively destroyed by its own government. It is your role, Congress, to stop the Executive encroachment into the Legislature and it is your duty to stop the Federal encroachment upon individual Liberty. Our founders took great care when creating a federal government that would be limited and always in submission to the states and the people. WHEN is Congress going to take a real stand against the destruction of the rights and privileges of this people? Will you wait until it’s too late? Mere “outrage” doesn’t get the job done. This Congress is pushing the nation to a point of turmoil it has not seen for 150 years. And make no mistake; each and every one of you will be personally responsible for what will occur. Are you prepared to live with that responsibility and those consequences? It will not fall on the shoulders of the President alone and the blame game will not alleviate the suffering of our children when they are so grievously affected. Yet, we can avoid repeating the mistakes of our history. But we must act now. We must act decisively. If not, we will regret our neglect. We have the opportunity now, but have no guarantee it will be available much longer. Does Congress truly understand WHY people fled communist nations to come to the greatest nation in the world? Do you truly know the cost of such sacrifice and what you are supposed to be defending? You are fooling yourselves if you think one more election is going to fix it. You don’t have that kind of time. The blocks are in place, and you have provided the mor-tar. Take a stand now. Not a political stand, but a stand that involves integrity, courage, and resolve. No more petitions asking the president to stop stealing legislative power. No more demands that Eric Holder resign. YOU must do your job and YOU must defend this nation and it’s Constitution from these enemies, both foreign and domestic. You must:

BOTH NEAR AND FAR

1. Put an end to the executive order madness. Exercise your constitutionally given power, as provided through the checks and balances and separation of powers. Show this nation that you understand that Legislative power is not to be shared and it is definitely NOT to be taken. 2. We are not subjects of the United Nations and never intend to be. Get them out of our busi-ness. 3. If you are unwilling to impeach, defund any person appointed by the executive branch out-side Congressional and Constitutional authority. (i.e. all the Christmas appointments and Czars) 4. Pick up your Congressional oversight responsibility and shut down these executive regula-tory agencies whose only purpose is to “harass our people, and eat out their substance.” 5. Get control of the immigration in this nation. We don’t want to see GAO reports telling us that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the State Department cannot agree on the degree of terrorist association a visa applicant must have to render the applicant ineligible. 6. It is time to indict Eric Holder for the criminal that he is. No more whining, no more demand-ing for resignations, INDICT him and then FIRE him. 7. Impeach Elena Kagan. She is obviously incapable of using the appropriate professional ethic and judgment needed to be a Supreme Court Justice. Learn from this mistake and actu-ally involve yourselves in the confirmation process. Your employers are sick to death of politi-cal games. 8. Repeal The Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act. Now. You are supposed to be protecting the rights of the people, not violating them. 9. End the 4th amendment violations permitted in the Patriot Act. Now. 10. Repeal sections 1021 & 1022 of NDAA 2012. It’s not only about habeas corpus, it’s about a. unilateral power given to the president by congress to determine who is a terrorist and then detain them in secret with no probable cause; b. unilateral power given to the president by congress to invoke the laws of war during a “hostility”; c. unilateral power given to the president by congress to transfer the power under the laws of war to “domestic agencies fighting terrorists.” 11. Get the IRS out of the passport business. 12. Don’t just read the Constitution, study it. Not how you studied it in law school, that wasn’t the Constitution, that was Constitutional Law, there is a huge difference. Those of you who went to Harvard, we understand if you don’t know what the Constitution is, it hasn’t been stud-ied there in years. May I suggest a course that I know will teach you the truth and is so simple a Congressman can understand it. I happen to know the teacher personally and I am sure that she would come teach it at her own expense and sacrifice. www.KrisAnneHall.com

These are some of the demands of your employers; we demand you do your job. These are the requirements of our founders; they have entrusted us with the Liberty purchased with their lives. These are the duties imposed upon you by the Constitution of the United States, and your obligations consistent with the oaths you took. And, these are the times that try men's souls. How will history remember us? The generation that participated in death of Liberty or the generation that gave our last breath to prosper it? I have made my choice. How will you choose? Mormons Have Irrational Beliefs? Who Doesn't?

Commentators on both the right and left and both secular and religious note with disdain that Mormons (Latter Day Saints, as Mormons refer to themselves) have irrational practices and beliefs. The former, we are told, includes the wearing of sacred undergarments and the latter includes posthumous baptisms and the claims by the prophet of Mormonism to have found and deciphered engraved golden plates in New York State.

I read and hear these dismissals of Mormonism with some amusement -- because everyone who makes these charges holds beliefs and/or practices that outsiders consider just as irrational.

Let's begin with the religious critics.

There doesn't exist a religion without such beliefs. I say this as a believing and practicing (non-Orthodox) Jew, so I'll begin with my own religion.

I believe the Torah is a divine book. I believe that God took the Jews out of Egypt and that He gave the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai. To atheists and secularists, these are not necessarily rational beliefs. And they are certainly not scientifically provable. As for practices that many would consider irrational, traditional Judaism has quite a few. Just to cite one: Orthodox Jews believe that they are not permitted to drink wine or grape juice poured by a non-Jew.

Concerning Mormon undergarments, it is worth noting that Jews have worn a "sacred undergarment" for thousands of years. Those who belittle Mormon undergarments might as well belittle the "fringes" (tzitzit) that observant Jewish men wear inside or outside their clothing. Yet, neither the Jewish nor the Mormon practice is in any way irrational. Wearing a garment to remind oneself to always act in a morally elevated manner hardly constitutes irrational behavior.

As for Christianity, non-Christians cannot be expected to regard the belief that God has a son who was born of a virgin as reason-based. (If they did, they would probably be Christian.) Nor do outsiders consider rational the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox belief that the wafer and wine consumed during Communion literally become the body and blood of Christ.

As for Muslims, the belief that the Koran was dictated by an angel to an illiterate man (Islam holds that Muhammad was illiterate) is surely not rational to a non-Muslim. Nor are myriad

post-Koranic beliefs such as the requirement that women wear a veil.

Page 20: “Courage Is Contagious” Pass it on. It’s Now, or Never!!Graceland was a fusion of melodic American jazz, African rhythms and traditional rock guitar riffs. Dont worry. This is

20

If all religious beliefs were dictated by reason alone, there would be no meaning to the word faith. A healthy religious life is composed of both faith and reason. And so is a healthy moral life -- no non-Jewish rescuer of Jews in the Holocaust did so solely because of reason.

As for the secular world, irrational beliefs permeate the left. For example, a generation of Americans has been educated to believe that men and women are, beyond physical differences, the same. Boys don't inherently prefer trucks and toy guns and girls don't naturally gravitate to dolls and tea sets, we have long been told. Give boys dolls and tea sets and give girls trucks and they will love to play with those things. Is that rational?

Or how about the tens of millions of people who believed Marxist claptrap about the inevitability of socialism? It was "scientific fact," the world's left believed, that every society goes through three stages: feudalism, capitalism, socialism.

And given the inability of any welfare state to sustain itself economically, is it rational to advocate the continuing expansion of government, as supposedly rational New York Times columnists do?

Is the belief that 50,000 Americans die each year from secondhand smoke rational? Is the certitude that we know what the climate will be in a half century rational? Or declaring sixth-graders guilty of sexual harassment for engaging in innocent, normal-boy behavior?

It seems to me that our secular age is a more irrational one than when America was more religious.

Rarely has the warning to get rid of the beam in your own eye in order to see the speck in your friend's eye been as applicable as it is to those who today mock Mormonism for irrationality.

We would do a lot better to judge Mormonism -- and, for that matter, Judaism, Christianity,

Islam, and the left -- by their fruits. And if we do, the religion of the Republican presidential

candidate looks pretty good.

Who would you want on your team?

Joseph Curl covered the White House and politics for a decade for The

Washington Times. He is currently a staff writer for the Washington Times.

Obama’s a domestic enemy of the U.S. Constitution

“Before he enter on the execution of his office, he shall take the following oath or affirmation — I do sol-

emnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to

the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.*

“* Unless, you know, 224 years from now, whoever happens to president simply decides he really doesn’t

want to do that.”

— Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 of Barack Obama’s U.S. Constitution

The Founders set the course in a simple, concise, 35-word affirmation — the president’s top job is to

“preserve, protect and defend” the Constitution. The chief executive does, of course, have other responsibili-

ties, but his guardianship of the document they had just written was deemed by the Founders to be of such

great import that they made him swear it — aloud, in front of witnesses.

In 1884, Congress, having no set oath of office, wrote its own: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will

support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will

bear true faith and allegiance to the same …”

Little did they know then that 128 years later, America would face just that: a domestic threat to the U.S.

Constitution.

From the very beginning, the president and his administration made clear they had no intention of enforcing

laws they didn’t like. Mr. Obama and his minions decided that they would simply stop enforcing the Defense

of Marriage Act, no longer prosecute growers of “medical” marijuana, and let some states walk away from

provisions in the No Child Left Behind law (which, by the way, was co-authored by Sen. Edward M. Ken-

nedy, Massachusetts Democrat, and passed the Senate by a 91-8 vote).

Mr. Obama’s Justice Department has even more flagrantly flouted the laws of the land. Out of the blue, Attor-

ney General Eric H. Holder Jr., the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, reinterpreted America’s gambling

laws (and dumped the decision on Christmas Eve so as to avoid scrutiny). More recently, Mr. Holder has de-

cided to thwart congressional oversight by refusing to release documents on the disastrous “Fast and Furious”

gun-running scheme, and he is actively fighting Florida for trying to expunge dead people from its voter rolls.

Now comes Mr. Obama’s decision to stop enforcing America’s immigration laws. The new policy states that

illegal immigrants who were younger than 16 when they entered the country are eligible for a two-year ex-

emption from deportation. Of course, the “deferred action process,” as Homeland Security Secretary Janet A.

Napolitano called it, will apply to illegals up to age 30. (Think when they legally get their driver’s licenses

they will also be handed a voter registration card?)

The increasingly desperate Mr. Obama, once a constitutional professor, knows full well he is circumventing

Congress. In March 2011 he told a group of young Hispanics: “America is a nation of laws, which means I, as

the president, am obligated to enforce the law. I don’t have a choice about that. That’s part of my job.

“Congress passes the law. The executive branch’s job is to enforce and implement those laws,” he said.

“There are enough laws on the books by Congress that are very clear in terms of how we have to enforce our

immigration system that for me to simply through executive order ignore those congressional mandates would

not conform with my appropriate role as president.”

23

So why now? Politics. The Hispanic population in Florida, Virginia, Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado may

well decide the November election, and with working-class whites, religious blacks, disenchanted young peo-

ple and Jews fleeing in droves, Mr. Obama is looking to shore up his support, even if that means violating his

oath to protect the Constitution.

Continuing his nonstop campaign of division — black against white, rich against poor, straight against gay,

religious against secular, race against race — the president is seeking to build whatever loose coalition of

support he can. Forget bipartisanship; a coalition of the middle, Mr. Obama’s sole path to victory, he thinks,

is to stir up so much discontent within different strata that he can win re-election.

Of course, the liberals who whined about President George W. Bush’s signing statements haven’t made a

peep about Mr. Obama’s Napoleonic power grab.

“What’s ironic,” columnist Charles Krauthammer noted, “is for eight years, the Democrats have been scream-

ing about the imperial presidency with the Bush administration — the nonsense about the unitary executive.

This is out-and-out lawlessness.”

But that doesn’t matter when you are King Barack. The Founders were determined to make sure no Ameri-can leader ever had the power King George III enjoyed. Which is why they also wrote this in the Constitu-tion: “The president, vice president and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office

on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Char Doonan Quick Comment

In an attempt to take advantage of the Sentinel’s 15th of the month release deadline, the Obama administration delayed announcement of the use of executive privilege in the Fast and Furious case until today, the 20th. However, by being tardy, the Sentinel has out maneuvered them.

Eric Holder in an 18 month tango with the congress has been effectively refusing congress access to documents in the Fast and Furious case preventing the congress from executing its constitutionally mandated oversight function. Early on, Holder assured congressmen that he would not invoke executive privilege. SURPRISE!

Allow me to take you on a nostalgic trip down Memory Lane. Richard Nixon was never accused of being involved in the Watergate break-in in any way. Nixon was accused of being involved in discussions on how to cover up the break-in. The obvious question was, “what could possibly be the national security interest with regards to treating these documents as a national security secret?” Invoking executive privilege was a red flag. The question every-one was asking was, “What did Nixon know, and when did he know it?” Seldom is the com-parison between activity A and activity B so perfectly parallel.

Why would discussions of how to politically handle the Fast and Furious scandal be a na-tional security issue deserving of executive privilege status? Obviously, if the President were to suggest covering up the incident, which has obviously been attempted by Eric Holder for the past year and a half, it would be an impeachable embarrassment. It is hard to imagine, however, how it could be considered a matter of national security. In the Watergate case the Supreme Court found no standing for executive privilege. Richard Nixon resigned over the incident in order to avoid an impeachment trial. If only Obama had as much integrity as Richard Nixon.

Always be yourself . . .

BOOK REVIEW:

by: Jane Byrd

The Tea Party–Three Principles by Elizabeth Price Foley

Tea Party Patriots – The Second Ameri-can Revolution by Mark Meckler & Jenny Beth Martin

As the Supreme Court issues its decision on Obamacare this month, now’s the time to pick up a copy of The Tea Party – Three Principles. The author explains – among many other things -- the arguments for and against Obamacare, relating legal issues to real-life situations, so even all we non-lawyers can understand.

Elizabeth Price Foley worked, as a younger woman, as a Capitol Hill staffer. Law school led her to realize that much of liberalism is simply unconstitutional. Now she is a law professor at a Florida university.

Investigating the Tea Party movement, she identified three “core principles” shared by all the diverse Tea Parties across the country. She calls these concepts “unique and essential to American identity.” Those three principles are (1) limited govern-ment, (2) unapologetic U.S. sovereignty, and (3) constitutional originalism.

“The Tea Party’s future,” she says, “will be largely determined by whether the ma-jority of Americans – most important, political independents – agree that these prin-ciples are both important and under serious threat.” She adds that “the biggest test will come with the presidential and congressional elections in 2012.”

Mark Meckler and Jenny Beth Martin are co-founders of Tea Party Patriots. Their book, Tea Party Patriots-The Second American Revolution, tells their personal stories, how they met, and how the Tea Party group they organized grew from 22 people (on their first conference call) to over a million people in less than two months. It’s quite a story.

Their last chapter invites readers to help plan the Tea Party’s future, if you’d care to take part.

In 2010, columnist Peggy Noonan opined that “the tea party saved the Republican party.” To read about why Tea Partiers didn’t “go third party” that

election year, see Tea Party Patriots, pp. 64-5.

P.S. June 17th is Father’s Day. Anybody still needing a gift for a Dad might consider a good book by a Navy SEAL: Chris Kyle’s American Sniper and Marcus Luttrell’s Lone Survivor were best

-sellers. Luttrell now has a second book, Service, just out.

The Presidential election of 2012 was too close to call. Neither Romney nor Obama had enough votes to win. There was much talk about ballot recounting, court challenges, etc., but a week-long ice fishing

competition was suggested to be the sportsmanlike way to settle things.

The candidate that caught the most fish at the end of the week would win the election.

So it was decided that there would be an ice fishing contest between the two candidates to determine

the winner.

After much back and forth discussion, it was decided that the contest would take place on a remote fro-

zen lake in northern Wisconsin .

There were to be no observers present, and both men were to be sent out separately on this isolated

lake and return at 5 P.M. with their catch for counting and verification by a team of neutral parties.

At the end of the first day, Mitt Romney returned to the starting line and he had 10 fish.

Soon, Obama returned and had no fish. Well, everyone assumed he was just having a bad day or some-thing and hopefully, he would catch up the next day. At the end of the 2nd day Romney came in with 20

fish and Obama came in again with none.

That evening, the Democrats got together secretly and said, "I think that Mitt Romney is a low-life,

cheatin' son-of-a-gun. Tomorrow don't bother fishing. Just spy on him and see just how he is cheating.'

The next night (after Mitt returns with 50 fish), the Democrats got together for the report of how the Re-

publicans were cheating.

Obama said, "You are not going to believe this, he's cutting holes in the ice."

What have we learned in 2,064 years?

"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled,

public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be

tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should

be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt.. People must again learn to

work, instead of living on public assistance."

Cicero - 55 BC

So, evidently nothing..
