“ASBS” –BRASEA NEWSWe have included the coming dates for our 2020 and 2021 Auctions in this issue and

please note a change to the 2020 Brisbane Auction to July 12th which means the Sth Qld

Lawn Show will be July 11th – the short reason is that Moreton Council has advised we

cannot have our usual date and gave us alternatives, so we have moved forward a week

and trust this will not cause us too much discomfort – just watch your paperwork if you are

involved with us in both the Sydney June and July Brisbane Auctions, as they are a week

closer and the “Old Fella” will have to watch his game !!!! keep an eye on him ….

The re-new of memberships for the 2019/2020 year under the new combined name

Association of Specialist Budgerigar Organisations (ASBS) – “BRASEA”, which

covers everyone, has gone really well and we thank those who have paid early, which

helps our planning forward in these difficult times. Our Sponsors, the small group that

they are, have all stuck with us again, which this is a great achievement in the very hard

financial times where it is difficult to get financial support from anywhere – another thank

you – all this means its onwards and upwards or maybe forward for another year of our

“Rares” programme …

EVERY CLUB CAN HAVE A CLEARWING & CREST POINTS AWARD

if you want them for your Club’s Show, it is as simple as an email or phone call

In 2020 we plan to experiment with a change to the start times for the Auctions – the

Halls will open at 7am as usual - the set up time will be from 7am to 9am ( Saturday set

up is unchanged at 2-5 pm in Sydney and 4-5pm in Brisbane) – Viewing will be from 8am

and the Auctions will start at 10am – if you feel this is not ideal please let us know,

but if there is no major problems beforehand, we will just let nature take its course from

March 2020…

The usual BSNSW Branch which organises the BBQ, at the Auctions in Sydney, has a

shortage of man power …. if anyone can assist even just a short break, please contact

Carlo Arfi 0424 601 124 he will be most grateful – West Sydney Branch BSNSW

retains all the proceeds of the BBQ ( ASBS - BRASEA asks for nil ) so please assist

them

FOR PURELY WORK RELATED

A letter from Tony

Tony has come out strongly supporting Don’s opinion on

the way the show bird is developing at this time.

Dear Friends,

I have read with great interest a number of Don Burke’s

past articles sharing his discoveries regarding our

feathered friends. Don most certainly has a way with

words. Some I have taken with a pinch of salt, as I regard

them as being common sense practices, and others like

the enormous amounts of medication and sprays

administered to his birds I found hard to believe.

His last write-up concerning the heavy head feathering on our beautiful show birds that Don

finds so offensive I will come to. Young man I am absolutely, definitely and categorically on

your wave length.

The idea of a huge amount of feathering, especially around the facial area will definitely be

distressing for our birds. I am, by the way Don, one of those lingering old farts with the

Banded Pieds that you previously mentioned so fondly. A “senior cit” Like you said, there

are still more Granddads out there, with their heads down breeding beautiful cage birds.

Now you have mentioned it what a wonderful addition to any show would a few well marked

Banded Pieds make. After all, they were “Aussie Made” in the first place and what a

challenge.

To breed a good one is not easy, I have been there, but the end result for your labours is quite

a stunning specimen.. I went through the process of breeding good type Banded Pied birds

years ago and it was a real challenge. 70 years ago actually! Bottom line is they look

stunning and we badly need another challenge on the showbench.

Getting back to the story in question, the great abundance of head feathering that seems to be

on the cards for our Budgie showbirds. (as shown in issue 197 May 2019 page 9)

These creatures are entirely at our mercy, like all the animals and birds that man seems to

delight in changing from the norm.

Given time there are lots of ways we can

change things but the end result must be

to the benefit of the bird or animal in

question.. we don’t want the budgie to

end up like the Do-Do or flightless bird.

So, getting back to the larger head size.

Absolutely not necessary.

Anything detrimental to the way a bird is

trying to exist is very wrong. Why the

heck would you lumber our beautiful

showbirds with a huge brow that the poor

things can’t see past.

Drinking, eating, cleaning themselves or even hopping from perch to perch would be a

challenge for them.

Also mating would be very questionable. Try finding your way around blindfolded, that’s

what it amounts to. The very word that covers the realm of showbird exhibition is “smart”

not ridiculous.

Don’s write up on this matter could not be bettered, so I will leave it at that.

Lots of these ideas come from overseas, also the bad ideas with them. Let’s leave them there.

We are smart enough to know what sort of show bird we want to bench on this side of the

water, so let’s put a stop to them arriving.

We put up with the “flecking” fiasco, for years, introduced into this country from overseas. I

considered that a disaster, plumage wise at the time. The abundance of head feathers seems

to be following from the same part of the world. If the council don’t put the lid on it the same

thing will happen as flecking and again, we will have a great many unwanted show birds to

find homes for. It’s plain to see.

Our beautiful budgies are becoming less active to a very high degree, even over my lifetime

and I feel the wonder of their flight will be completely lost, which would be a great shame.

We can be kinder than to burden them with this handicap.

I hope that the Budgie Council front up to this looming problem pronto if not sooner.

Take care

Tony Piercy

Happy Birthday Tony By the time you get this magazine Tony

will be celebrating his 88th Birthday (July

27th ) In those years he has clocked up

over eighty years of bird keeping, having

started his journey with some canaries

under the guidance of his grandmother.

He had expertise in breeding “Scarlets”

(Scarlet breasted parrot) finches, canaries,

goldfinches, budgerigars and specialised

lines of poultry prior to coming to

Australia. His special interest among

budgies was the Banded Pied, which he bred successfully many years ago. He delights in

telling a story about a Violet Banded Pied with a perfectly straight band that he was very

proud of. The bird injured itself in the centre of its band. The older ones among us will

remember when every scrape and sore was treated with Gentian Violet ( often referred to as

“purple paint”) Tony treated the bird with it but in the process painted a perfect circle in the

middle of the band. He then took his “new variety” along to is club to show it off…………

eventually admitting what was really going on.

Since retiring from budgies and setting up a large aviary for finches he has acquired a few

pairs of budgies to attempt to breed Banded Pieds again.

Thank you the Rares Club of WA and Tony for this great article

Bought at Scoble auction March

2018. Have kep all young which have

been exceptional. She is a very

aggressive hen to cocks she doesn’t

like. Need to watch for the first hour

after putting her with the selected

partner, by then you’ll know. But she

is worth the effort. She bred for 2

rounds with MCH 17/167 with good

results. This cock is also in the
