COLLECT

Gladden us with holy joys, almighty God,

and make us rejoice with devout thanksgiving,

for the Ascension of Christ your Son

is our exaltation,

and, where the Head has gone before in glory,

the Body is called to follow in hope.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Liturgy of the Word

READING I Acts 1:1-11

In the first book, Theophilus,

I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught

until the day he was taken up,

after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit

to the apostles whom he had chosen.

He presented himself alive to them

by many proofs after he had suffered,

appearing to them during forty days

and speaking about the kingdom of God.

While meeting with the them,

he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem,

but to wait for “the promise of the Father

about which you have heard me speak;

for John baptized with water,

but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

When they had gathered together they asked him,

“Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons

that the Father has established by his own authority.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,

and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,

throughout Judea and Samaria,

and to the ends of the earth.”

When he had said this, as they were looking on,

he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.

While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going,

suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.

They said, “Men of Galilee,

why are you standing there looking at the sky?

This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven

will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9

God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.

READING II Ephesians 1:17-23

Brothers and sisters:

May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,

give you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation

resulting in knowledge of him.

May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened,

that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call,

what are the riches of glory

in his inheritance among the holy ones,

and what is the surpassing greatness of his power

for us who believe,

in accord with the exercise of his great might,

which he worked in Christ,

raising him from the dead

and seating him at his right hand in the heavens,

far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion,

and every name that is named

not only in this age but also in the one to come.

And he put all things beneath his feet

and gave him as head over all things to the church,

which is his body,

the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Mt 28:19a, 20b

Go and teach all nations, says the Lord;

I am with you always, until the end of the world.

GOSPEL Matthew 28:16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee,

to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.

When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.

Then Jesus approached and said to them,

“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father,

and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

HOMILY

PROFESSION OF FAITH: The Renewal of Baptismal Promises

Dear brothers and sisters,

together, as a parish community,

let us now renew the promises of Holy Baptism,

by which we once renounced Satan and his works

and promised to serve God in the holy Catholic Church.

And so I ask you:

Do you renounce Satan?

R/. I do.

And all his works?

R/. I do.

And all his empty show?

R/. I do.

Do you believe in God,

the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth?

R/. I do.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only

Son, our Lord,

who was born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered death and was buried,

rose again from the dead

and is seated at the right hand of the

Father?

R/. I do.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and life everlasting?

R/. I do.

This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church.

We are proud to profess it in Christ Jesus our Lord.

R/. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

MAY 24, 2020

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

INTRODUCTION

With confidence we place our petitions before God, who hears the prayers of our

hearts as we acclaim: “Lord Jesus, you are the King of glory.”

R/. Lord Jesus, you are the King of glory.

INTERCESSIONS

• For the Church, that, empowered by the Spirit, we may faithfully give witness to

the Gospel and continue Christ’s mission of bringing hope and healing to those in

need, we pray to the Lord.

• For all who are awaiting a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit into their lives,

particularly candidates for Confirmation or Holy Orders, that God will pour out

abundantly the Spirit upon them and empower them to be instruments of Christ’s

love and mercy, we pray to the Lord.

• For leaders in every parish, that they may develop wise practices as public

gatherings resume and that many hearts may be open to assisting in the parish in

new ways so that everyone who comes to church may be safe, we pray to the Lord.

• We pray for the eternal rest of Philip Delia, Veryl Morrison, Naoma Alms, Geri

O’Neal and for the special intention of Charlie Hernandez and Josephine

Prevost.

• For all who have died, especially Linda Watanabe, and as we honor our fallen

soldiers who have served our nation, that God will welcome them into the

company of the saints forever, we pray to the Lord.

FINAL PRAYER

Father of heaven and earth, hear and grant our prayers through your Son Jesus who

sits at your right hand in glory, Christ our Lord. R/. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,

graciously grant peace in our days,

that, by the help of your mercy,

we may be always free from sin

and safe from all distress,

as we await the blessed hope

and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

LAMB OF GOD Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

grant us, grant us peace.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION Behold the Lamb of God,

behold him who takes away

the sins of the world.

Blessed are those called

to the supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy

that you should enter under my roof,

but only say the word

and my soul shall be healed.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON Mt 28: 20 Behold, I am with you always,

even to the end of the age, alleluia.

COMMUNION SONG SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER St. Alphonsus Liguori

18th century

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Almighty ever-living God,

who allow those on earth to celebrate divine mysteries,

grant, we pray,

that Christian hope may draw us onward

to where our nature is united with you.

Through Christ our Lord.

Page 12: “Asension” y James B. Janknegt, Image ... · grant, we pray, that through this most holy exchange we, too, may rise up to the heavenly realms. Through Christ our Lord. HOLY .

Concluding Rites

SOLEMN BLESSING May almighty God bless you,

for on this very day his Only Begotten Son

pierced the heights of heaven

and unlocked for you the way

to ascend to where he is.

R/. Amen.

May he grant that,

as Christ after his Resurrection

was seen plainly by his disciples,

so when he comes as Judge

he may show himself merciful to you

for all eternity.

R/. Amen.

And may you, who believe he is seated

with the Father in his majesty,

know with joy the fulfillment of his

promise

to stay with you until the end of time.

R/. Amen.

And may the blessing of almighty God,

the Father, and the Son, ✠ and the Holy

Spirit,

come down on you and remain with you

for ever.

R/. Amen.
