WE NEED YOUR HELP!Ours is a community filled

with wonderful people whoare caring and compassionate. A place where wewatch out for each other. A congregation wherepeople volunteer constantly to help others. As acongregational family it is always important to bethere for each other, particularly at times of greatcelebration and also at times of need anddifficulty. As your rabbi, along with the membersof the hospital visitation committee and our caringcommittee we want to make ourselves available toyou at such times. But there is a problem, aSERIOUS PROBLEM we are facing that only youcan help us to solve.

Due to strict privacy laws and concerns aboutconfidentiality, we no longer have ways to check ifyou are in the hospital, are ill, are recovering fromillness, or someone in your family-circle has died. This might make you feel that we are notconcerned about you. But nothing could befurther than the truth. It is just that we do notknow about what you are facing. Yes, there is aslight chance that we may miss something, as weare not perfect. But most often, it is just an issueof us not knowing about it. So, I am reaching outto you to ask you to help us and each other. Helpyour family member, your friend, your fellowcongregant, by letting us know if a CRJ member isill. PLEASE let us know when a CRJ member is in ahospital. PLEASE let us know if a CRJ member hassuffered a death in her or his family. PLEASE let usknow if a fellow CRJ congregant is facing difficulty.PLEASE let us know if a fellow CRJ congregantneeds a ride to a doctor’s appointment, helppicking up a prescription or even some chickensoup!

In doing so you will be doing a Mitzvah to helpus to do a mitzvah. So, in a real sense it will be a“Double Mitzvah.” It is easy to do too. Just callthe CRJ Office (407-645-0444) or email Annie at([email protected]) and let us know whoit is and what they need. We will contact them toschedule a visit.

As always, thank you so much for making ourcongregation the caring place that it is.Wishing you a joyful Purim and an inspiringPesach,Steve

I want to remind everyone tomake plans to attend the CRJspring gala which will be held at

the Hilton Altamonte Springs on April 19, 2020. Thisyear we are celebrating 70 years of CRJ and we arehonoring Dr. Larry and Susan Halperin, who are sodeserving of this honor. As always it will be a greatevening with wonderful food, entertainment, andfriendship. If you have not already made yourreservations, please do so as soon as possible.

The CRJ Board and Music Search Committee, spearheaded by Fred Schott, continues to work hard tofind just the right person to continue our tradition ofmeaningful music for our Temple. We interviewedsome wonderful candidates and hope to announce inthe near future the individual who will be joining us. Iwant to thank the many congregants who havevolunteered to lead us in music at our services. You aretoo numerous to mention by name but know that yourwillingness to serve is greatly appreciated byeveryone.

On behalf of myself and the entire Board, I want togive a special recognition to Rabbi Engel foreverything he has done to keep CRJ moving forward inthe last few months. Obviously, Rabbi Engel is always acritical part of our CRJ family; but he has gone aboveand beyond our expectations. He has had to continueto meet the needs of our Congregation in everyrespect including coordinating music, training our B’naiMitzvah kids, working with our youth programs, as wellas serve the spiritual and emotional needs of ourcongregants. Words cannot express how much weappreciate all he has done and continues to do.

Our Nominating Committee, headed by FeleciaZiegler, will soon be presenting its slate for the CRJBoard. Please make plans to attend our annualmeeting, which will be held on May 13.

CRJ continues to thrive. This is not just because ofthe efforts of Rabbi Engel, but also all our staff and somany others who have volunteered in so manydifferent areas. From our youth programs, to religiousschool, to Sisterhood, to Prime Timers, and to themany educational programs being offered, CRJ iscontinuing to meet the needs of all our congregants.

Finally, let me thank all of you for continuing to bepart of our CRJ family. Sometimes we do not thank youenough, but all of you are important to CRJ. If youhave ideas or suggestions on how we can better meetyour needs, please let us know.Mark

Sheryl Sacharoff, Ed.D

The message of Passoverremains as powerful as ever.Freedom is won not on the

battlefield but in the classroom and the home. Teachyour children the history of freedom if you want themnever to lose it. – Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

Passover is one of my favorite Jewish holidays. It’s atime of year when remembering our history asstrangers in Egypt inspires me to think of others whoare still oppressed and yearning for freedom. It’s atradition for family and friends to remember our pastin very specific and engaging ways, sitting together atthe table reading the same story each year. As Jews,we are fortunate to be part of a history and culturethat helps to define who we are and allows us todiscover what we may become. In a thought-provoking essay that I recently read, Rabbi Ben Sprattwrites about the significance of asking questions aswe read together during our seders. He encouragesus to help our children become more curious and tobe a present participant in the seder.

Rabbi Jen Lader proposes that in this day and agewhen so many of our questions can be answeredquickly as we can reach our smartphones, we musttake the time to engage our children in thosequestions that can’t readily be answered on Google.

Reading each year about our collective Jewishhistory informs us all about our ancestors who wereenslaved in Egypt. Equally important is to teachchildren about their own family history.

The author Bruce Feiler once said that children aremade stronger and more resilient when they knowthe story of their own history. Recently, I read atremendous op-ed in the Orlando Sentinel from ateenager who became a bat mitzvah at CRJ,Georgia Bernbaum. With the research that she didon her family’s past for a school project, she wasable to make connections to a person that she hadno idea shared an ancestral link. This knowledgegave her great insight into understanding herJewish identity and how being Jewish impacts otherpeople’s views. “It does not matter how much weidentify with our heritage,” Ms. Bernbaum realized,“because other people will always identify us by it.”What an amazing lesson to each of us as weremember that once we were slaves in Egypt, andnow we are free!

Understanding our past allows us to think criticallyabout today’s issues and challenges. As we getready to once again tell the story of our Exodusfrom Egypt, I hope that you are all inspired to shareyour family story with your children. Along with theFour Questions of the seder, I wish you all inspiredquestions as we continue to search for answers.

From my family to yours, Chag Pesach Sameach, ahappy and healthy Passover!Sheryl

With the founding of the HighSchool (YALA) program, Gary volunteered to be oneof the instructors. For several years, Gary has led theYom Kippur, afternoon Discussion Session as part ofthe High Holy Days observance. Beginning in 2014,he served on the year long, Governance Committeewhich had been charged with revising theConstitution and By-Laws for CRJ, completing theirtask in 2015. Gary has participated in the preparationof meals on Christmas day for the Social Actioncommittee’s partnership program with Meals onWheels. In a fun mode, Gary volunteered to be inthe cast of two of our past Purim Spiels. We begin the evening with a

a retirement community in Longwood, on behalf ofthe Jewish Pavilion. He also teaches iPhone/iPadclasses to the seniors there. For the past six years, hehas been teaching an Introduction to Judaism class, each semester, at the campuses of Seminole StateCollege, as a component of a Comparative Religionscourse. He is also involved in interfaith activities inthe community and has served on several panels aspart of interfaith programs.

Gary feels that when you volunteer, you are not onlyhelping the institutions to provide services to theirconstituents, you begin to really feel you are part ofyour synagogue community and the broadercommunity. It’s a nice feeling to walk into CRJ andrecognize and be engaged with other people andnot feel you are an outsider. You do not have to getas involved as much as Gary has done but findingareas of interest to you and getting involved will helpmake you feel that you are truly a part of CRJ.

Sisterhood

So Much Fun and Friendship to sharefrom Sisterhood: To begin theyear…WRJ’s YES Fund Luncheon washeld on January 12!

As in past years, a member who hasbeen, and continues to be a criticalpart to our organizations & programswas honored. This member is BeverlySmith. We all know that Beverlyendlessly volunteers at all CRJShabbats & events. She is everywhere! She puts in even more effort & time (ifthat’s possible) to Sisterhood activities.About 80 people attended the

luncheon in support for Beverly & theYES Fund.

WRJ’s YES Fund raises funds tosupport Youth, Education & SpecialProjects. A few of the programs thatthese funds support are scholarships toURJ camps, youth leadership training, social justice advocacy & HUC IsraelRabbinical programs. We are proudthat our Sisterhood raised over $2,000during the luncheon. Thank you to allwho enjoyed a lovely afternoon & tothose who made donations in supportof Women of Reform Judaism’s YESFund.

Next some of us traveled a bit…toClearwater that is for WRJ’s Area Dayat Temple B’nai Israel. Nine Sisterhoodmembers mingled and learned fromother Sisters in the Central Floridaarea. We had a wonderful day filledwith lots of food, fun and discussion. We discussed many future endeavorsas Sisterhoods and investigated someideas for creating additionalmembership.

Not many hid from MITZVAH DAY-February 2nd! Sisterhood had helpfrom School of Chai students to create55 Cancer Care Bags for OrlandoHealth Downtown Cancer Center. Inaddition, many items were donated toother charities. We have a wonderfullycaring community that works welltogether! Thank you all who donatedand volunteered their time andcreativity!

Looking forward to seeing you andhope you join in the Sisterhood fun! Ifyou are interested in anythingSisterhood just ask or come to a
