‘From Her, Kings Are Born’

ਜਿਤੁ ਿੰਮਜਿ ਰਾਿਾਨ

ਭੰਜਿ ਿੰਮੀ ਭੰਜਿ ਜਨੰਮੀ ਭੰਜਿ ਮੰਗਣੁ ਵੀਆਿੁ ॥

From woman, man is born; within woman, man is conceived; to woman he is engaged and married.

ਭੰਿਿੁ ਿੋਵੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਭੰਿਿੁ ਚਲੈ ਰਾਿੁ ॥

Woman becomes his friend; through woman,the future generations come.

ਭੰਿੁ ਮੁਆ ਭੰਿੁ ਭਾਲੀ ਭੰਜਿ ਿੋਵੈ ਬੰਧਾਨੁ ॥

When his woman dies, he seeks another woman; to woman he is bound.

ਸੋ ਜਿਉ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਿੰਮਜਿ ਰਾਿਾਨ

So why call her bad? From her, kings are born.

ਭੰਿਿੁ ਿੀ ਭੰਿੁ ਊਿੈ ਭੰਿੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਿੋਇ ॥

From woman, woman is born; without woman, there would be no one at all.

ਨਾਨਿ ਭੰਿੈ ਬਾਿਰਾ ਿੋ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

O Nanak, only the True Lord is without a woman.

ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਜਖ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਿੀ ਭਾਗਾ ਰਤੀ ਚਾਜਰ ॥

That mouth which praises the Lord continually is blessed and beautiful.

ਨਾਨਿ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਊਿਲੇ ਜਤਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਜਰ ॥੨॥

O Nanak, those faces shall be radiant in the Court of the True Lord. ||2||

Marriage is an Equal Partnership of Love and Sharing between Husband and Wife.

ਧਨ ਪਰ ੁਏਪਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਪਨ ਬਿਪਨ ਇਕਠ ਿਇੋ ॥

They are not said to be husband and wife, who merely sit together.

ਏਕ ਜੋਪਿ ਦਇੁ ਮੂਰਿੀ ਧਨ ਪਰ ੁਕਿੀਐ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥

They alone are called husband and wife, who have one light in two bodies. ||3||

God is the husband and we are all his bride

ਠਾਕੁਰ ੁਏਕੁ ਸਬਾਈ ਨਾਪਰ ॥There is one Husband Lord, and all are His bride.

ਬਿੁਿ ਵਸ ਕਰ ਕੂਪਿਆਪਰ ॥The false bride wears many costumes.

ਰ ਘਪਰ ਜਾਿੀ ਠਾਪਕ ਰਿਾਈ ॥He stops her from going into the homes of others;

ਮਿਪਿ ਬੁਿਾਈ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਾਈ ॥He summons her to the Mansion of His Presence,

and no obstacles block her path.

ਸਬਪਦ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਸਾਪਿ ਪਆਰੀ ॥She is embellished with the Word of the Shabad,

and is loved by the True Lord.

ਸਾਈ ਸਦ਼ਿਾਗਪਿ ਠਾਕੁਪਰ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੨੯॥She is the happy soul bride,

who takes the Support of her Lord and Master.

Women have an equalright to participate in the congregation.

ਆਵਿ ੁਭੈਿ ਗਪਿ ਪਮਿਿ

ਅੰਪਕ ਸਿਿਿੀਆਿ ॥Come, my dear sisters and

spiritual companions; hug me close in your embrace.

ਸਾਿ ਸਾਪਿਬ ਸਪਭ ਗੁਿ

ਅਉਗਿ ਸਪਭ ਅਸਾਿ ॥੧॥All Virtues are in our True Lord and Master;

we are utterly without virtue.

ਪਮਪਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਾਿੀਆ

ਸੰਮਰਥ ਕੰਿ ਕੀਆਿ ॥Let's join together,

and tell stories of our All-powerful Husband Lord.

ਘਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਪਰ ਪਿਆਗ ੈਅੰਧਾ ॥The blind fool abandons the wife of his own home,

ਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਪਸਉ ਘਾਿੈ ਧੰਧਾ ॥And has an affair with another woman.

ਜੈਸ ਪਸੰਬਿੁ ਦਪਖ ਸੂਆ ਪਬਗਸਾਨਾ ॥He is like the parrot,

who is pleased to see the simbal tree;

ਅੰਿ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਮੂਆ ਿਟਾਨਾ ॥੧॥But in the end, he dies, stuck to it.

God is our Mother as well as our Father.

ਿੂ ਮਰਾ ਪਿਾ ਿੂਿੈ ਮਰਾ ਮਾਿਾ ॥You are my Father, and You are my Mother.

ਿੂ ਮਰ ਜੀਅ ਰਾਨ ਸੁਖਦਾਿਾ ॥You are my Soul, my Breath of Life, the Giver of Peace.

ਿੂ ਮਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰ ੁਿਉ ਦਾਸੁ ਿਰਾ ॥You are my Lord and Master; I am Your slave.

ਿੁਝ ਪਬਨੁ ਅਵਰ ੁਨਿੀ ਕੋ ਮਰਾ ॥੧॥Without You, I have no one at all. ||1|

The practice of women burning themselves on their husband's

funeral pyre (satee) condemned.

ਸਿੀਆ ਏਪਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਪਨ

ਜੋ ਮਪਿਆ ਿਪਗ ਜਿੰਪਨ੍ ਹਿ ॥Do not call them 'satee',

who burn themselves along with their husbands' corpses.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੀਆ ਜਾਿੀਅਪਨ੍ ਹਿ

ਪਜ ਪਬਰਿ ਿਟੋ ਮਰੰਪਨ੍ ਹਿ ॥੧॥O Nanak, they alone are known as 'satee',

who die from the shock of separation.

ਭੀ ਸੋ ਸਿੀਆ ਜਾਿੀਅਪਨ ਸੀਿ

ਸੰਿੋਪਖ ਰਿੰਪਨ੍ ਹਿ ॥They are also known as 'satee',

who abide in modesty and contentment.

ਸਵਪਨ ਸਾਈ ਆਿਾ ਪਨਿ

ਉਪਠ ਸਮੰ੍ ਹਿਾਿੰਪਨ੍ ਹਿ ॥੨॥They serve their Lord, and rise

in the early hours to contemplate Him.

The ritual of dowry soprevalent in Indian society condemned.

ਿਪਰ ਕਿ ੋਿਪਰ ਸੋਭਾ ਦਵਿ ੁਪਜਿੁ ਸਵਰੈ ਮਰਾ ਕਾਜੋ ॥

Give me the Lord as my wedding gown, and the Lord as my glory,

to accomplish my works.

ਿਪਰ ਿਪਰ ਭਗਿੀ ਕਾਜੁ ਸੁਿਿਾ ਗੁਪਰ ਸਪਿਗੁਪਰ ਦਾਨੁ ਪਦਵਾਇਆ ॥

Through devotional worship to the Lord, this ceremony is made

blissful and beautiful; the Guru, the True Guru, has given this gift.

ਖੰਪਡ ਵਰਭੰਪਡ ਿਪਰ ਸੋਭਾ ਿੋਈ ਇਿ ੁਦਾਨੁ ਨ ਰਿੈ ਰਿਾਇਆ ॥Across the continents,

and throughout the Universe, the Lord's Glory is pervading.

This gift is not diminished by being diffused among all.

ਿੋਪਰ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਾਜੁ ਪਜ ਰਪਖ ਪਦਖਾਿਪਿ ਸੁ ਕੂਿੁ ਅਿਕੰਾਰ ੁਕਿ ੁਾਜੋ ॥

Any other dowry, which the self-willed manmukhs offer for show,

is only false egotism and a worthless display.

ਿਪਰ ਰਭ ਮਰ ਬਾਬੁਿਾ ਿਪਰ ਦਵਿ ੁਦਾਨੁ ਮੈ ਦਾਜੋ ॥੪॥

O my father, please give me the Name of the Lord God as my

wedding gift and dowry.
