MID NORTH RELAY FOR LIFE 2017—CLARE

Once again a number of locals supported Cancer research by participat-ing in the Mid North Relay for Life 2017 at the Clare Oval on 18-19th November. It was great to see the young and not so young locals spread themselves amongst a number of teams during the Relay. Well done to Mid North Relay for Life committee people Sue Pratt and Julia Agnew on their huge effort they put in both leading up to and during the Relay.

Nearly $60,000 was raised towards Cancer research which was a great effort by all involved. “The Fish Whispers” went home with the “Best Team Theme’, (left Captain Tamara Pyrke) and raised $3,550 The Cats for Life won the best Lamp postraised just shy of $4,000 (Below Back: Leanne Keech, Cathy Girsch, Kerryn Mugge, Captain Sue Pratt, Lyn Barr, Lesley Randolph, Graeme Wandel. HARVEST 2017 The season has again been a mixed bag with the luck of the draw if you got rain during the season and then not so lucky if you got it during harvest. On the whole crops have been ok except for the crops which got hit by frost or mice!!. Harvest commenced late October for many and there for a while it looked as though it could be a early finish, but not to be. On November 30th and December 1st a decent rain sent the district’s farmers home for a rest. Bowillia topped the district with 52mm, Kybunga had 36mm, Blyth had 35mm and Hart 31mm. While over the hills in the west only 8mm fell. Below: The black crops seen in the district are Faba beans. With the recent rains the bean may discolour, plus too much rain can make the wheat grain sprout which makes it a long queue at the silo and less money in the bank!!...

FINAL 2017 session (14th Dec) Xmas Decorations and Picnic Lunch Farewell for year

Playgroup will resume in Term 1 2018. On Thursday 30th December the Blyth Playgroup fami-lies enjoyed “Messy Play” with Melanie from Playgroup SA. The children thrived in playing in slime, water, spa-ghetti, sand and playdough. Melanie finished the ses-sion by making volcanoes from vinegar and carb soda in a bottle. The children’s eyes all lit up when the frothy bubbles came flowing out the top. Left: Ruby Kells, Elsie & Belinda Angus, Ivy Weckert. Below: Wait and see the volcano ex-plode.

BLYTH BITS: Happy 80th birthday to Alf McQuirk who will celebrate at a big party !! Alf turns 80 on Thursday 21st December and will be par-tying at the Blyth Christmas Street Carnival, so make sure you wish him a happy birthday. Happy 30th birthday to Holly Ottens for No-vember 29th and she celebrated with a party at home with friends and family. Cheerio to all those who have been unwell and have had stays in hospital. Special cheerio to Kaye Wandel who is spend-ing time in Balaklava Hospital. Cheerio to Barry Spinks who is recuperating after surgery. Cheerio to Brian Page who spent 2 weeks in the new Royal Adelaide Hospital and enjoyed a room with a view over the Ade-laide Oval. Due to poor health Brian has had to closed Page’s Deli after 71 years with the doors open to the Blyth community and travellers. In 2016 we celebrated Page’s Deli 70th birthday. The Blyth Main Street is certainly a lot quieter with Page’s Deli doors not open. Brian will not be returning to the shop and in 2018 more will be known as to the shops survival. We wish Brian all the best with his on going treatment. Thanks to Les Maynard who has been manning the Saturday and Sunday papers outside Page’s shop and to Ian Wandel at the Blyth Post Office for taking over the weekday papers. There for a while Blyth was spoilt to have three eateries in town but due to the temporary closure of BDH Bites due to the fire, then Brian’s poor health and the closure of Page’s Deli, the Blyth Hotel has been left to carry the load. It is great Jarrod & Naomi have provided extras supplies to locals and travellers for a quick takeaway or drink.

Hannah Wandel (daughter of Graeme & Denby) has continued to thrive in Can-berra and recently was awarded 2017 Emerging Leader of the Year at the National Australian Leader-ship Excellence Awards (ALEAs) Final at a gala din-ner ceremony at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth. Hannah is the Founder and CEO of Country to Canberra, a national Not-for-profit which empowers young rural women to reach their leader-ship potential through leadership training, inspiration, connec-tion and mentoring to overcome gender and geographical barri-ers to success. Hannah manages governance, sponsorship, stakeholder engagement and 15 volunteers in her role. Hannah is a Director of YWCA Canberra, a World Economic Forum Global Shaper and Director of the National Rural Women’s Coalition – Australia’s peak body for regional women. Hannah currently works as an adviser at the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Well done Hannah! (Hannah also suffered a ruptured achilles during 2017)

Local Kylie Williams enjoyed success recently when she at-tended the The SA Health Awards in the Panorama Ball Room, Adelaide Convention Centre. Kylie was a team member of the winning Country Health SA Integral Leader-ship Program—which won the award for Excellence in Non-Clinical Services. The CHSA Integral Leadership Program is an ambitious, large-scale, network wide change initiative which has improved organisational performance through implementing new structures and processes, such as the inte-gral performance and accountability frame-work; shifting mindsets, motivating manag-ers to think and act differently about complex performance is-sues; building positive culture, to shift towards reflective, inclu-sive and learn-by-doing behaviours; and developing skills of 200+ leaders, through workshops, coaching and action learning. Kylie’s team was up against some larger and excellent competi-tion and the country team were thrilled with their win. Needless to say a long night of celebrating was had!. Well done Kylie!

Also congratulations to Jeremy Kells (Kells & Co) who won the NAB’s SA/NT 2017 Quality Advice Business award at the NAB Excellence Awards. Jeremy and wife Carmen attended the awards at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Well done Jeremy.

Sue Pratt has been seen in a few papers as her job as the Balaklava High School Agriculture teacher encouraging stu-dents to pursue careers in agriculture by attending the Food & Fibre Education SA Initiative camp. Sue also attended for a few days & had a great time visiting the diverse array of occupations agriculture can lead to.

BLYTH BOWLING CLUB The pennant bowls is nearly half way through the season with Division one sitting at second on the premiership table, Division Two climb-ing the ladder every week and are now in the top four of the premiership table. Thursday Pennants are sitting just out of the four. During the last two months some of our play-ers have been playing in State Events such as State Pairs and State Mixed Pairs. Well done to Maureen and Brian Eime for making the last 16 in the state and playing in Adelaide at Grange Bowling Club on Sunday 3 December. Saturday 2nd December saw the Bowling Club hold their annual Christmas dinner, with 33 people attending for a three course meal consisting of prawn cocktail, roast pork and turkey with hot vegetables and plum pudding, custard and icecream. Thanks to all help on the day and night. It was an enjoyable night by all. During the night the club welcomed another Life member. Raelene Lamond was presented a life mem-bership award from Club President Bruce Farley, for her services to the club plus her involvement in the Hutt and Hill River/ Brough-ton Thursday Pennants over the past 30 years. Raelene retired from the game about 5 years ago. Raelene now joins her husband Brian and they are the first husband and wife Life Membership recipients of the Club. In November at the club tea, David Lamond President BMW presented two 80 badges to two members of our club, Jeff Pratt and Barry Kennett who turned 80 years old during the off sea-son of bowls. Both Jeff and Barry have involved in the club for over 40 years. Including being both President of the club, in-volved on the committees, selectors and attending working bee. Jeff is also Life Member and Patron of the club. Cosmo Four was held in October with the all rinks full, we had people from Peterbrough, Goowla , Port Pirie, Riverton, Tanunda as well as the local area too. All players enjoyed a fish lunch with lovely salads made by the club and sweets. The win-ner of the day was Auburn Bowling Club and runner up was Riverton Bowling Club. It was enjoy by all attended the day.

BLYTH TENNIS CLUB

Prior to the season starting we had several meetings at MNTA level with assistance from Tennis SA, to make a major change to the junior competition. Previous years has seen 15 teams (8 players per team) in 1 division with ages ranging from 8-16.

So a trial season was agreed to with 3 divisions and teams of 4 players. It has been a major change and while we have had some teething problems, and a change to some teams after 4 weeks, the positives clearly outweigh the negatives, and we have more juniors than ever before playing tennis in our associa-tion.

There are 12 teams in division 1, a 10 team division 2 Pool A, a 8 team division 2 Pool B and a 10 team division 3 competition. The purpose of the change is to have players more in line with their abilities and age (which was also raised to a true U17 comp), and in line with Tennis SA policy. Next season the clubs will have a greater handle on who should play where, and the potential to have more teams entered next season, and more players.

At Blyth to start the season we submitted 2 division 2 teams and 2 division 3 teams. We have now changed this to 3 division 2 teams and 1 division 3 team.

Our division 2 teams are Blyth Storm and Blyth Hurricanes in Pool A and Blyth Thunder in Pool B. Both Storm and Thunder are top of the table in their pools, and Hurricanes sit 5th. Our division 3 team is called Blyth Heat and they are 3rd on the ta-ble. It's great that we have been able to give the chance of giving more players a Saturday game with the division 3 team, this would not have happened under the old competition.

Sam Clayson is our professional tennis coach who takes coach-ing on Monday nights at the hard courts. We have quite a few younger potential players who are hitting the ball for the first time this season, and under the careful eye of Sam some if not all of our young up and coming tennis players will be seen out on the courts on a Saturday in no time! Thanks to Simone Bigg for her time and effort in placing the players into groups and coordinat-ing this important part of our tennis coaching.

Thursday nights we have practice for the Saturday players on the grass courts, and we also run a practice for our non Saturday players on the hard courts, and try have match play for them to prepare for the real stuff. Our ball machine 'Lobster' gets a real work out on Thursday night's and we can see the improvement in the junior players constantly hitting the ball back when Lobster fires them off.

The junior players are all now playing in their official Blyth Tennis Club polo shirts and caps, and gives them a real sense of be-longing to the club with their official uniform. Thankyou to all the parents for making the financial commitment for the shirts (caps supplied by the club) and also for the professional coaching.

If you have a child in the 8-10 age group and are considering a Saturday sport, please contact either myself, President Kylie Williams or Simone. Under the new concept we can fast track your child into Saturday competition tennis a lot quicker as our division 3 team is for 1st time players, and playing other players who are also on the court for the first time. And with 4 player teams we have more flexibility to give our players more of a chance to play on Saturdays as opposed to 8 player teams.

Congratulations to Blyth Thunder player Drew Bertelsmeier who won the Under 11 age group at the Clare Junior Tournament. Great work Drew!

And also to Kasey Bigg, Cartia Jaeschke and Joel Bertelsmeier who have played A Grade tennis, and Angus Kennett who has played B Grade. Great work by our juniors to play senior tennis

and I hear they have had more wins than losses. Consider they have to report for junior tennis at 8.15am, play then off to senior tennis in the afternoon, only getting home later that afternoon and playing 5 sets for the day. Well done guys! And I hear there was a father/son doubles combination last week in A Grade at Clare, 13 year old son did all the running, and it came down to the wire in a tie breaker. How much oxygen did Dad need after the game Joel? Probably the same question to Kasey after a doubles game with her Mum. But how good is that, to go out and play a competition match with your child. I'm thinking of making a comeback!! Michael Jaeschke , Junior Co-ordinator The Tennis Club has made some great improvements to their grounds in the last 12 months with the final touch of new signage on the new pergola. The new playground is fully operational and thanks to the Wakefield Regional council for funding this important project for not only the tennis club but also for the community. Many RV travellers have also been enjoying the play equipment as well.

Thanks to Paul Gibson, Jack McRae, Christian Whiteright) for erecting a new shed to cover Guild-ford Street pump which had previously blown away by September’s tornado. During the last few weeks Senior tennis numbers have been low, with one week having 12 players out, but still field-ed the A & B Grade teams with Juniors and fill ins. The A Grade tennis team have been travelling along nicely and are currently sitting at 2nd, while the B Grade are close to break-ing into the top 4.

From the book “1,000 unforgettable Senior Moments”: A driver was filling out an insurance claim form explaining his mishap this way. “Coming home I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don’t have.” Another driver on his claim wrote, “I thought my window was down but I found out that it was up when I put my head through it.”

Let’s hope this doesn't happen to any locals!!

BLYTH LUTHERAN CHURCH UPDATE It has been 14.5 months since the Blyth Lutheran Church was damaged and in the next 2-3 weeks the congregation are praying for a return by Christmas Eve. While much of

the external work to the building has been completed, there is still much to be done inside, but Builder Michael is trying his best to ensure handover is done by Christmas

Eve, and there probably wont be too many minutes to spare!! Just like the TV show “The Block!”.

Kybunga News Welcome to Wayne and Sharon Rankin as they settle into Kybunga Congratulations to Barb Hayes on completing the Half Mara-thon event at Tanunda in October. A run of 21Kms in 2 hours. Maureen Wiech came back to celebrate her 80th Birthday with family and friends in the local district. Rhys Eldredge has made a full recovery and is “back in step” after losing 2 toes in an unfortunate accident while moving sheep. The Kybunga Resi-dents Group has pur-chased a Weather Sta-tion to assist land own-ers with weather condi-tions in regards to spray-ing and harvesting con-ditions.

May the harmony of Christmas

stay in your heart all year round and may the Lord send his bless-

ings. May God bless you and let this

Christmas season bring comfort and joy to you and your

family.

HOLIDAY ADVENTURERS with Tanya and Drew Bertelsmeier. We spent an amazing 3 days in Dubai, the highlight was the de-sert tour, recommend it to everyone. lots of laughs and bruisers but Drew and I would do it again. It was very hot 42d and the humidity was at 90% but the desert tour is early evening, a lot cooler, we were not complaining as they had 51d before we ar-rived. After the tour they cooked a fantastic meal and you sit down to watch the belly dancing, you also ride camels, surf the sand dunes and hold falcons. (one of Drews highlights) The shopping malls are unbelievable, with ice rinks, ski slopes, floors full of kid’s games, not to mention great shopping. Our 5-star ho-tel was more like 7 stars. The buildings are also amazing, but strange not to see trees and plants. We visited the famous Palms and the tallest building Burj Khalifa. Taxi drivers are just a bit cra-zy but they are cheaper than taking the bus or train if your happy to risk your life. LOL We were so excited to travel to Holland on the airbus 380, it was huge, we met an African man who runs his own hospital-ity business, Drew was excited to receive some money he gave Drew as it had elephants print-ed on it. We also plan to stay in contact. 7 hours later we arrived in Hol-land and family to greet us. Over the 2.7 weeks we visited so many places all around Hol-land, we stayed with my auntie who I stayed with 33 years ago. Drew loved the food and way of life. I haven’t been able to drink coffee since coming back, I was a bit spoilt over there with their coffee! He liked the idea of getting on your push bike and going to the shops. Holland have more pushbikes what they do popula-tion. We visited my Great Grandpas statue, he was the pioneer of Tu-lips, we also visited the building where my mum was born and my grandpa had his Boiler maker business. Amsterdam was an eye opener for Drew! (you need to ask Drew to details) We dressed up in costumes in Volemdam a beautiful

fishing village. I would have to say the Delft is my favourite part of Holland, I have a second cousin who lives here, she or-ganised push bikes for us and we headed off on a 6-km bike ride around the country side of Delft, half way stopping for a lovely lunch. We rode alongside of dykes, over bridges and ad-miring the wind mills. Drew and I also went to see the lion king, all in Dutch but we know what was going on. It was the opening night and apparent-ly, I had photos with famous people, still have no idea who. The costumes are amazing. The 600 yr. old jail was an eye opener in The Hague. They

locked us in one of the cells and turned off the lights so we could experience what they went through, the jail also was a place of torture. Not nice but interesting. We visited cheese factory’s, chocolate factory’s, climbed up the old windmills, Clog factory’s, smallest house in Amsterdam 2.2m wide, travelled through Amsterdam on boat through the canals and by horse and cart, beautiful sound on the cobblestone roads and even went go carting with family, amazing all indoors and two stories. So much more and so much fun!
