Obviously with no luncheons, or Club functions being held due to Government lockdown restrictions, there is not a lot of Club news at present. As with all other community groups, and businesses, we await the Government decisions, on lockdown measures, and social distancing etc, which they have advised will be, made by mid May, We can then all reassess our individual situation, and what we can, or cannot do in the months ahead. Early indications from both Government & Health, are that while some slight adjustments to measures currently in place, maybe implemented from mid May, the bulk including especially social distancing, will remain in place for coming months. The no’s allowed to gather in crowds, presently 2 people, maybe increased slightly, according to Government & Health Department web sites. These measures, and also when businesses, such as Hotels, Club’s & Restaurants can reopen, will have a major bearing, of how the community can move forward. Bereavements

Mike Lee.

Whilst Mike was not a member of ANZROC (NSW) we were sadly informed by our members Geoff & Betty Brown:-

Mike Lee, formerly of ANZ Travel, passed away on Wednesday morning, 25 March 2020.

Mike had recently suffered a non-COVID 19-related lung infection and had been taken to hospital on the preceding Sunday evening.

His wife Di reported that Mike had been doing well; in fact on Tuesday night – true to form – had been making a few jokes while she was with him.

However, sadly, his condition worsened during the night and he passed away around 6.30 am on 25th March.

We believe Mike had been a member on the ANZ Retired Officers Club, as well as being a member of the Forestville RSL sub-Branch, where we had kept in close contact with him. He was most social and lively company, well known for his good cheer and enthusiasm, and, of course, well versed in travel matters.

Mike had personally arranged great travel adventures for us over the years and was, while still well, involved with the travel Industry.

We believe he will be sadly missed by his many friends from the Bank, the Forestville RSL sub-Branch and the local community.

Obviously due to the current Covid 19 virus restrictions, Mike’s funeral was a private family service, with a memorial service to be held at a later date.

Vale, Michael Lee and sincere condolences to his family from all Club members.

Best regards

Betty and Geoff Brown

Les Webber.

Sadly we were also informed of the passing of Les Webber.

Whilst Les was not a member of ANZROC (NSW), he would be know to many older members from his time in the Bank.

Our Treasurer Mike Cunneen advised :-

Les was an ES&A banker and joined the Bank at Kendall Branch in 1958. He and Robert Ziems Bob Primmer and I attended a New Entrants course together at ES&A Martin Place in Feb 1958. Memories.....

Condolences to his family from all members.

A "Nil" return applies for this month for entry to the Hons. Happy birthdays to all members who celebrated their birthdays in April.

Welfare Report Ken Dighton – Welfare Officer Report for April 2020 Sick List: We wish the following members, and any other members who are not performing well at present, better health and good recoveries:

Alf McDermott – Alf hasn’t been very well, and he suffered a mouth bleed (near the site of his cancer which was removed in 2018). He had a biopsy and spent several anxious days waiting for the result. He was very happy when he was informed that the bleeding was due to a problem tooth. The not-so-good news is that he has had to wait for a time-slot with a specialist at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse at RPA (that is where his cancer surgery took place). Anyway, he is more comfortable awaiting the procedure in the knowledge that the biopsy was clear.

John Penn – like many others John was in “lock-down” when I phoned him. And he said if I wanted to visit him I should “send a photo”. His sense of humour doesn’t diminish, and he needs it because he has been having real problems with his mobility. He was undergoing a hydrotherapy program which he felt was doing some good, but unfortunately the Covid19 issue interrupted things.

Geoff Taylor – Geoff just managed to squeak in for back surgery before the Covid19 restrictions started. He is now at home and progressing well.

In the current fraught environment I’m sure there are some other members who perhaps should be on this list, but at this juncture I don’t have any more names. To those I say “Get Well Soon”. I made contact with the following people, who enjoy the esteemed title of Honorary Member, to check up on them and to extend best wishes for their birthdays this month and for the year ahead:

Bob Boys (84) – Bob is quite well, and working hard to cope with being housebound. And waiting to get back to bowls. He didn’t celebrate at a fancy restaurant or anything similar, but he tried his hardest to enjoy himself at home.

Barry Thompson (86) – Barry said he is “battling along” and learning to live with a distinct lack of mobility. Both he and wife Beverly have recently had separate stays in hospital, but things are looking better in that regard. A family celebration at home was the order of the day. Best wishes Barry.

Aub Walker (88) – Aub is fine and manages a 5km walk each day to keep his parts working. At the moment his other activities are almost non-existent because his village has put in place very strict isolation requirements. He has been retired about 33 years.

Dave Fleming (85) – Dave said he “wouldn’t be dead for quids”, despite having very little walking stamina mainly due to his chronic back problem. He said he has installed an exercise bike in his garage and he believes he is definitely getting some benefit from it. His garage is empty at the moment because the car is out of action, so he gets on his bike to keep out of Heather’s hair.

Col Killer (84) – Col and Robyn have settled-in nicely at Mudgee. They are both well and have been walking a couple of KMs a day to keep in shape. He said he will probably have to settle for a couple of drinks at home to remember his birthday.

Bill Bricknell (82) – Bill is enjoying life and he and Vivien are keeping well. They live in a very comfortable community minded complex and are able to communicate readily with immediate neighbours from their deck.

Wendy Keys (83) – Wendy said she is doing alright, and abiding by the isolation rules (although isolation definitely doesn’t have a lot going for it). She said she has, however, had a couple of visitors from the outside world – her gardener and her housekeeper! Hang in there Wendy, and best wishes for the 26th.

Digby Milne (82) – Digby said he is comfortable and in good health. He walks daily to ensure his parts don’t seize. Like most on this birthday list, his birthday celebration will be muted.

Kevin O’Connell (82) – Kevin is well and enjoying life, but of course he is looking forward to things getting back to normal and he is able move around his neighbourhood again. The local golfing community (which includes Kevin) had a small win in recent days when the club re-opened the course for games involving pairs.

Bob Riseborough (81) – Bob is reasonably well and taking things easy. He said he retired to Parkes some 26 years ago after managing Trundle branch. With Covid19 being in play his birthday celebration will probably be limited to a beer at home (perhaps within yelling distance of his neighbours). Have a good one Bob.

I wasn’t able to make contact with Don Davis whom we believe has relocated to higher care aged accommodation. We hope you had a good one Don.

SOCIAL AGENDA A number of other venues equally remain on the Agenda list that the Committee fully supports and will be pursued once the way ahead becomes clearer.

Understandably that due to our current situation with COVID-19 measures, our Social Calendar is now in a stalemate. As advised in the February Newsletter, the Hawkesbury Tour was deferred but remains on the Agenda for future revival.

Best Wishes to All….. NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS:

ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS OF $10:00 for 2020 ARE NOW DUE

(Honorary members and widows/widowers of former members are exempt).

The Annual TAFE Partners lunch remains a priority and normally occurs Sept/August. There are indications that the National Cabinet is considering the relaxing of Group Gatherings up to 50 people and our luncheon is set at 40 Max. The likelihood is that doors may be reopened at TAFE for this function and further advice will issue in due course. In the interim we can all re-energize.

Obituaries Denis Lickley Kevin O’Connell has written: What a shock when I received the March newsletter. Margaret and I had left for an 11 day cruise on the Voyager of the Seas on 25th February and therefore never received notice of Denis' passing on 28th February. My association with "Digger" began in Fiji in 1966 when he was Accountant Lautoka and I was Manager's Assistant, Suva. Our close friendship continued through our service with the Bank and included working together on temporary work including with ANZ after we retired (around 1994). Denis was a caring and all round good banker and great company on social outings including the popular ANZ Top End of Australia Coach Safari Tour in 1994 and short cruises he organised for the Fiji expats etc. We continued to play regular monthly golf at Pennant Hills until his health problems prevented physical activities and we will always acknowledge the lengthy term and work he did on the ANZ ROC committee. May he now rest in peace. Regards Kevin O'Connell

To help you in your self-isolation, we include a Crossword and a Find-a-word. The theme is Places in Australia and Sydney Suburbs. Some places you may know well or have may have visited, others you may need to use the internet to find the answers. Once you complete the crossword you can then find the same words hidden in the find-a-word.
