Old Town Festival Update

Next month the Old Town Festival comes into focus. Billed as the town’s major family Summer event there is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy!

The festival kicks off on Sat-urday 6th June with A Night At The Races in the Com-monweal Performing Arts Marquee on The Lawn.

This fun night costs just £10 per ticket and includes a hog roast, Royal Ascot Hat Com-petition and much more frivolity.

The main event is on Sunday 7th June starting in Wood Street at 10am where there will be a variety of entertain-ment including Commonweal Street Theatre, cycling races, the official opening ceremo-ny, a visit from popular princesses and the parade which passes through at 11am.

After this it is the Family Fun Day on the Lawn. Here fami-lies will be able to browse through an array of stalls from delicious food ven-dors to exquisite crafts and workshops. Watch out for the Knight School demonstration and after that why not have a go at archery.

There will be fairground rides for the children and smiles a plenty. Visit the Dog Show, or even bring your dog along to take part and meet the Drove Vets crew followed at the end of the day by a pet service. If health and fitness is your thing then there is zone for you to find out more!

The Commonweal PTA will be running their fund raising café selling delicious home-made cakes and cream teas, beside their mini fete which includes face painting, hook a duck and book stall.

During the afternoon the Commonweal Performing Arts Marquee hosts a pro-gramme of community acts of music and dance. In the evening the marquee be-comes a music venue where folk can watch a variety of entertainment for free! This includes tribute bands such as Same Old Faces and Zing who headline. Also on the bill are the Swindon Sam-ba band and father & daugh-ter duo The Generation Gap.

Spring is bursting out all over

Winter is behind us, days lengthening and, with temperatures steadily warming we start to emerge for longer from our homes.. Not only we humans, but also our pets, start to enjoy out-door activities once more Many dogs get those longer walks they have craved all winter and for our cats the joys of curling up by a warm fire or radiator are balanced by the need to get out and check one’s local territory as temperatures rise both by day and by night.

For both cats and dogs the relative isolation of the winter months now gives way to more ani-mal contact – and with this comes more oppor-tunities for potential diseases to spread.

We humans provide ideal opportunities for transmission of infections amongst ourselves by crowding into warm under-ventilated rooms at gatherings during the winter months, hap-pily swapping cold and ‘flu viruses amongst ourselves. However many pets remain mainly at home and out of social contact at these times. Now, with the weather improving, dogs meet once again on walks or even when taken on short holidays; amongst cats diplomatic discus-sions over disputed territory rights recommence. Animal contact begins once again and lingering infections have a chance to spread.

Modern veterinary medicines have been devel-oped to provide high levels of protection and control against many major pet diseases. Vac-cines now exist against a wide range of infec-tious diseases. These work best if given before possible contact with disease, so Spring is a good time to check that pet vaccinations are up to date and that resistance to preventable infec-tions is well boosted.

Spring does not only usher in infectious germs, it also brings with it opportunities for a range of other health problems to occur. Inquisitive dogs investigating new smells and tastes on their walks, or cats out on their night time hunts, may face an increased likelihood of worms, for which regular dosing with a reliable worming prepara-tion is the best form of control.

As weather patterns change, so do the vari-ous natural parasites to which our pets may be exposed. In recent years a deadly lungworm, which can also cause severe bleeding problems, has steadily become an increasing threat to British dogs. This tiny but lethal parasite may be carried by the slugs and snails, which, with the new warmth of Spring, are also emerging to the annoyance of all gardeners.

Some dogs actually consider these molluscs to be a tasty morsel, whilst others may innocently ingest the smaller varieties whilst chewing grass or playing with outdoor toys or bones. Happily a therapy, which can easily be applied regularly to a dog’s skin and is effective against this and many other unpleasant parasites, is now avail-able from vets.

Whether it is the vaccines used against a wide range of communicable pet diseases, or anti parasitic medications to control debilitating and sometimes lethal parasites, both are most effec-tive if given at the appropriate time - so that it is only the joys of Spring which burst out all over!

BUSINESS CENTRE STEPS BACK TO THE 80S FOR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

Bizspace’s BSS House Business Centre in Swindon stepped back into the era of neon, perms and power ballads with an 80s themed fun day to celebrate the site’s 30th birthday.

BSS House, on Cheney Manor Industrial Estate, was Swindon’s first ever businesscentre and Bizspace used the day to raise almost £350 for The Swindon Therapy Centre for Multiple Sclerosis. Numerous companies in the 73-strong business community came to work in fancy dress and embra-ced the fashions of the 80s, including Marketeam and Dermott Brannigan. The business centre was open to the public, as usual, during the day the dayand Michael’s Tailoring held an exhibition of how tailors looked 30 years ago &displayed photographs of staff from the era. The highlight of the event was a space hopper race with participants from Bizspace customers, Screaming Media, Marketeam, Dermott Brannigan, Swindon Party Warehouse and MIC Italian Foods, as well as Labour parliamentary candidate for North Swindon, Mark Dempsey. The race was won by Gareth Morris of Swindon Party Warehouse.

BSS House Business Centre manager, Jane Kirk, said the event was a huge success.

“There was a fantastic atmosphere at the centre and it was great that so many businesses were able to join in. Those who could not were very charitable with their donations,” she said. “We are really proud to be marking this important milestone in our history and to have played a part in the foundation of so many other local companies. Over the years more than 500 businesses have had their home at BSS House and 13 of our current occupiers have been with us more than 10 years.” Bizspace’s sales and marketing direc-tor, Emma Long, added: “At Bizspace we love to celebrate success – whether that’s our customers, our staff, or our centres – and the more people who can join in the fun, the better. “We’re delighted so many businesses and individuals could get involved with our anniversary celebrations and to have raised money for charity makes the event all the more special.”

Bizspace offers short term, flexible space from industrial estates, business centres and business parks throughout England and Scotland. For more information visit www.bizspace.co.uk or call BSS House on 01793 613 456.

Many of the songs featured have been specially arranged for Kentwood by both local and nationally acclaimed musicians, including top West End musical director Paul Maguire and ex-Kings singer Bob Chilcott.

From humble beginnings in 1964, Kentwood has progressed to becoming one of the country’s lead-ing show choirs. They have performed in Germany, Austria, California, Poland, Romania, Ireland and Spain. Through its concert programme, the Choir has helped raise over £1million for local and national charities. The experience, priced at just £50, also offers VIP parking. All profits from the lunch experience will go towards Prospect Hospice’s care and support of local people.

The hospice is also asking people to open their gardens during the summer as part of its annual Open Gardens event. “Gardens don’t have to be extensive, but they should have features that would be of interest to visitors,” says community fundraiser Amy Francombe. “I would love to hear from anyone who has an unusual garden, or a garden which has local historical significance, but if you have any gar-den that people would want to see, then please get in touch.”

You can even limit opening your garden to just your family and friends, according to Amy:

“No matter how big or small your garden is you can still raise funds by opening your garden,” she says. “You could host afternoon tea, a live music event or even put on a mini-fete with stalls and games, even turn your annual family barbecue into a fundraiser by asking people to pay for a plate. There are lots of ways to turn your garden into the perfect setting for an enjoyable fundraising event.”

A full list of public Open Garden events will be added to the hospice’s website throughout the summer months.

What expenses can I claim through my Company on top of mileage? When staying away overnight, you can claim for the costs of accommodation. You can also claim Incidental Overnight Expenses, not necessarily for business but items such as toothpaste, phone calls to family etc. (receipts not needed), up to £5 per night in the UK and £10 outside the UK. -When staying with friends/family, claim for a meal, a gift, or a contribution to bills. Claim the actual amount and keep receipts if possible. -Claim for property rental, utilities and Council Tax. -Site costs for staying away in your own caravan.

Advice for small businesses

Ensure you include everything in your Self-Assessment Tax Return! If you under-declare your income it could cost you penalties AND interest – read the guidance notes!

Mistakes I have seen recently:Buy to let property someone thought they didn’t have to include the big profit on the sale of their buy-to-let property.

Foreign Income - many people who thought that, because their foreign income was taxed abroad, it didn’t need to be entered into their tax return.

Child Benefit - people earning over £50,000, who were unaware that they must include their child benefit on their Tax Return.

Pension Contributions - people often don’t know if pension contributions on their payslips are paid by them, or their Employer. If paid by you, they should be included on your Self-Assess-ment Tax Return. If paid by your Employer they don’t need to be included.

Most people believe that, in life, you don’t get something fornothing. Well, at Swindon Evangelical Church this Easter, that definitely wasn’t the case. The church ran an energetic four day holiday club for primary school aged children.

The club was completely FREE and the 103 children definitely got more than just a dusty old church hall. The church was transformed into a polar landscape complete with large scale paintings and an ice tunnel.

Each day the children were welcomed by “Henry Helter Skelter” and “Bare Feet” who introduced the theme for the day before they made amazing crafts, played polar themed games, learned Bible verses and heard stories from the Bible about Peter, Stephen, Philip and Paul. The central message of the club was that we are never too old or too young, never too bad, and have never made too many mistakes for God to love us.

Fillet of gurnard risotto

Tel: 01793 671050 www.woodstreetfoodhall.co.uk

Wood Street Food Hall, 22 Wood Street, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN1 4AB

Gurnard are the ugly sisters of the fish world that always get commented on by custom-ers when I have them on the counter. They come in three types; red, grey and yellow (tubs). They have flat bellies and have wing like fins probably called wings! They don’t grow very big, but boy, are they tasty. Did I mention they were ugly too!

These fish are bottom feeders around our shores. This does not mean that your derrière is at risk skinny dipping at Bournmouth but that they use their wings to stir up food from the seabed. Once a by-catch and used as bait by lobster fishermen they are now sought after by top chefs. Normally a by catch is not a very tasty alternative to overfished spe-cies, but with regards to the gurnard it is a very tasty equal and classically used in a bouillabaisse. Watch out as I suspect the gurnard will become as popular as the once cheap monkfish. Unlike the monkfish the gurnard has a soft sweet delicate flavour that will stand on its own. These fish are best filleted and the flesh becomes bright white when cooked.

My favourite recipe is fillet of gurnard risotto. First sweat some shallots in a pan until soft then add a clove or two of garlic. Then stir in the Aborio rice and then add a few glugs of white wine and reduce. Then as with all risottos gradually add the stock (fish stock in this case) until the rice is just soft and creamy. Stir in some cooked peas. Then grill the fillets of gurnard (skin side down) and season. Stir in some cream and fresh parsley to the risotto and grate some parmesan over the top. Finally add the fillets of gurnard to the top of the risotto with a wedge of lemon and serve. Simple yet effective. You can buy a whole gurnard for around a fiver which means it is a good cheap midweek meal or a cracking starter if deep fried with Tempura batter.

Slimming World Update

Successful Slimmer’s Spring into New CareersTwo successful Swindon slimmer’s are embark-ing on new careers with weight loss organisation Slimming World.

Sabrina Waite, 34 of Abbey Meads and Tina Hendry 37, of Freshbrook have lost almost 14 stone between them and hope to inspire Swin-don residents in their very own groups.

Sabrina says her turning point came when she saw a picture of herself following a family holiday. She found that she had been making excuses to her family and friends to avoid cer-tain activities, she realised that her weight was taking over her life.

“I was not in a good place, emotionally” Sabrina begins.

“I had resigned myself to being the ‘big one’ and felt completely out of control with my weight. I tried so many diets and none worked – I didn’t know what to do anymore”. Despite feeling this way, it was several months before Sabrina took that first step and joined a Group.

“It was a real leap for me; I had convinced my-self that I was beyond help and that going to a group would be a humiliating experience.”

she recalls. When she arrived, nothing could have been further from the truth. “I was imme-diately at ease, like I belonged. There was no judgement, just a fabulous consultant, friendly people and bags of support”.

Similarly Tina says “walking through the doors of my group for the first time I felt scared, embar-rassed and worried I would be judged about my size. After meeting my consultant those feelings quickly disappeared.”

Tina’s decision to join her local Slimming World Group came when her doctor told her that her weight could lead to her missing out on her 3 children growing up.

Sabrina, a self-confessed choc-a-holic, is honest about her large appetite and found herself in-stantly hooked on Food Optimising. “I could not believe how much I was eating and yet, losing weight” she said. Able to tuck into curries, burg-ers, pasta and all her favourites, Sabrina learnt to cook hearty, family meals and discovered a love for experimenting with different dishes.

“I always hated cooking” she laughs “now I get excited to try new recipes – and I still get to enjoy my chocolate and a sneaky glass of wine!” When asked if Slimming World meals are family friendly, Tina is very quick to respond that the best thing about Food Optimising is the fact she never goes hungry and her and the children still regularly enjoy roast dinners, steak and chips and ‘Fakeaways’.

“I love everything about Slimming World. The food, the support, the way it has completely changed my life, that’s what has inspired me to open my own group” says Tina. “It’s sad to think there are people out there who just don’t feel like they have the support, we promise you at Slimming World we are with you every step of the way”.

Sabrina will be running her group every Tues-day at 7.30pm at Westlea Primary School, Langstone Way and can be contacted on 07791 809504 for more information and Tina will be running her group every Wednesday at 7.30pm at Central Community Centre, Emlyn Square

“Swindon College Old Boys RFC Proudly Sponsored By”

“What a season for Swindon College Old Boys.”

Some may call it the most suc-cessful season ever, some will call it the most successful sea-son in living memory, however all who were participated in it will call it a pleasure to have been a part of.

This season was not what you would call a tale of two halves, it was more the tale of one squad. It was a squad of players, coaches, managers, supporters and heart – with heart being the quality above all others that saw ‘the college’ succeed.

For the 1st XV promotion back to Southern Counties North was all they wanted, they achieved that with 4 games still to play and in the process got to the final eight of the Senior National Vase. For the 2nd XV avoiding a finish at the bottom of the table was the ambition – so finishing just 6th in the table is an ambition smashed, with only losses to a loaded Melksham and Lewis Moody’s Bradford on Avon preventing them from finishing 3rd.

With tour to Withycombe RFC (the team that finally ended the Cup Run to Twickenham) and the end of season ‘Dinner & Dance’ beckoning it’s a time to reflect on the ups, and downs, of the 2014-15 season – a sea-son that truly was a pleasure to be a part of. However with new sponsors, new players and

a few old faces returning to the club only time will tell what next year has to hold.

The final players of the month, sponsored by Harman Elec-trical are; Damon Murphy and Matt Finnegan. Both are newcomers to SCOB RFC this season, but both have shown

why they are here and it goes back to a word used at the start, heart. Both have become leaders in their own right, both with the determination to suc-ceed, but with the humility to do it as a team.

My Tattoo RemovalMonth Four

This Month I visited Gone in a Flash laser treatments for my 4th appointment for tattoo removal, on arriving at the Jennings street surgery Heather Cooke once again ensured I was medically suitable for my next treatment and asked about my experience so far.

The whole experience has been fantastic despite the painful procedure even for the biggest of men, I am very pleased with the appearance of the Tattoo after my 4th proce-dure and there is a massive difference to the way it looks.

You will see from the images below taken just 5 days after my 4th treatment, the removal is certainly going well with some parts already completely removed.

Heather mentioned she has had some great feedback from her clients and is seeing more people visit her studio with enquiries for both

Tattoo and hair removal, Heather has recently started treatments in Chippenham at the Pic-ture house Tattoo Parlour working alongside some of the UK’s leading tattoo artists, this is obviously a huge step for Gone in a Flash laser treatments and a very exciting time for Heather and her team.
