HOLY FAMILY DAY SCHOOL:Happy All Saints Day! In Chapel we read stories from the Bible, learn about different character traits, and study the saints! Each saint story we read focuses on a positive aspect of his or her life and offers a prayer to that saint. The stories show that the saints were people who chose to be good, kind, and giving. They all shared a great love of Jesus, and yet they made mistakes – as each of us sometimes do. We also discuss the idea that if we are sorry for our mistakes, God ALWAYS forgives us!

FARM FRESH:Thank you to all who are using their key tags when making grocery purchases at Farm Fresh. We have ordered 100 more tags and they should be arriving in the next few weeks.

YNOT:We have another big Thank You to everyone who came out to YNOT Italian for the Day School Spirit fundraiser. The restaurant was packed! It was so nice to see so many friendly faces.

YANKEE CANDLE FUND RAISER:Tomorrow is the last day to order Yankee Candles for the Day School’s fund raiser! These candles and holiday candle holders make excellent gifts for those family members and friends who are hard to buy for! Simply go to yankeecandlefundraising.com and use the Group Number 990056705 (for Holy Family Day School), and the school will receive a generous percentage of the proceeds from your purchase. We appreciate your support and generosity!

FIRST SATURDAY ROSARY: Please join us next Saturday at 5:00 p.m. to pray the Rosary.

WINTER WATCH 2016: The dates are set for Winter Watch 2016. We will host the homeless from Wednesday, February 24, to Wednesday, March 2. To all you wonderful volunteers that make this week happen, please mark your calendars. We have entertainment every evening for our guests and are looking for a magician this year. If you know someone who can do a few magic tricks, please contact Connie Nowak at (757) 971-3043.

BUILDING COMMITTEE UPDATE: The Committee met with a representative from the NET Team to clarify the Parish Case Elements from the “Living Our Mission Campaign.” Case Element 1 identified repairs to the Church (Worship Space) lighting, foundation waterproofing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, with follow on work to improve and probably replace the sound system. These repairs will be confirmed with the Diocesean Building Commission. In the meantime, we have opened discussions with a team of professionals to develop preliminary concepts for our review. Updates will be posted to the Parish Web Site, and further disseminated through the Parish Pastoral Council. Feel free to contact members of the Parish Council or the Building Committee if you have questions.

PATRON SAINTS OF THEWORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES

The World Meeting of Families was a wonderful event. Did you know that it had named two official patron saints?

SAINT JOHN PAUL IIIn 1979, Saint John Paul II was the first pope to visit Philadelphia, where he said Mass on Logan Circle for nearly one million people filling the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. In 1994, he celebrated the first World Meeting of Families in Rome, which aimed to strengthen the sacred bonds of family across the globe. Upon his canonization, he was declared “the pope of the family.”

SAINT GIANNA BERETTA MOLLAA pediatrician and mother of four, Saint Gianna is best known for her selfless love as a mother, giving her life to bear her fourth child in 1962. She was beatified by Saint John Paul II in 1994 and canonized in 2004. Saint Gianna is the Patron Saint for mothers, physicians, and unborn children. Her life was a testament to “the family fully alive.”

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWSThe Knights of Columbus would like to thank all the parishioners who

attended our Octoberfest.

Our next event is an Oyster Roast on November 14. The cost will be $25.00 for all you can eat and drink. Tickets will be sold after all the Masses.

On November 12, we will be holding an Admissions Ceremony which is the first step in becoming a Knight. Any man that is interested in joining the Knights of Columbus, please call Grand Knight Charlie Clarkson at 416-2707.

“CARE FOR OUR EARTH:”Pope Francis in his encyclical, “Laudato Si” (para. 22), urges that we learn to adopt a circular model of production, capable of preserving resources for present and future generations. This applies to all areas of life including the natural sphere. The fall season is a special time to recycle what our Earth provides. The pine trees supply us with pine needles which are good for mulch to keep our plants protected and moist. Some of us have multiple pine trees and may resort to disposing surplus needles at the curbside to be picked up. The oversupply that we do not need can be recycled by offering them to friends or neighbors. The leaves of most trees which we rake can be recycled to produce compost thereby providing the carbon dioxide that is needed to make compost. The small branches which fall from the trees can be placed in the compost to keep it from compacting so that air which is an important ingredient can pass through. The vegetables we planted can also go into the compost after they have stopped producing (except for tomato plants). The pope went on to explain how our natural ecosystems work: “plants synthesize nutrients which feed herbivores; these become food for carnivores, which produce significant quantities of organic waste which give rise to new generations of plants.” We can go further (which would be an article in itself) and through our creativeness learn how to reuse NON-RECYCLABLE products as crafts; an example would be transforming metal utensils into art forms. Keep an open mind on how you can recycle natural items.
