2AWARDS

Elizabeth has received 2 Gold Keys and 1 Silver Key from the Scholastic Art Competition (Gold is like 1st and Silver is 2nd). One of her artworks won an American Envisions award and competed nationally in New York City.

MATERIALS

Her favorite materials are paint or pencils. She normally works with acrylic paint, but during college she has tried oil paint. She says that it is totally different that acrylics and takes longer to dry.

Elizabeth Oates is currently a sophomore at Western Kentucky University. She plans on majoring in biology with a minor in studio art.

ART HISTORY

Her mom and great-grandfather were both into art, but she doesn’t believe art is a trait that runs in someone’s genes.

“I’ve always been known as ‘the art girl,’ drawing all over the back of my tests,” she said.

Her high school art teacher, Mrs. Stewart is who really encouraged her to do her best artwork. Stewart pushed Oates to enter her art into competitions and do the best that she could do.

TIPS

Art is for anyone. If you aren’t good at drawing try sculpting, knitting, painting.

Try taking art classes to build confidence and receive pointers.

Go to Hobby Lobby and just start buying stuff; there are people there to help you with whatever you need.

When you paint something it is your own and no one else can create it just like you did.

Art takes the blandness out of everyday life, enjoy it.

Elizabeth’s future plans include going to medical school after graduating from Western Kentucky University. She wants to become a plastic surgeon. One of her

future goals includes studying abroad her senior year at WKU to study art.
